Dear Colleagues and Supporters:

It is with great regret, but with unanimous consent, that the board has decided to cancel the ASA conference coming up this May 2-4, 2020 in Washington, D.C. As the Coronavirus situation progresses, we understand this to be a pandemic that has not yet reached its full swell, and we expect that it will continue long enough that it is impossible to assure the safety of our participants as soon as May. It is our responsibility as a medical organization to support the efforts of public health authorities who have clearly advised against public gatherings, and to assure the best health of not only those who might attend, but also the patients and families to whom they would return.
We are currently working with our hotel contacts to negotiate this situation, and assure as best we can that the damages to the finances of the organization are minimized. We will be getting more information out about this shortly, and will reach out to you directly. Full refunds will be available.

We are so sorry for this change, but are in agreement with the long and growing list of similar meeting organizers that are taking the same path. Doing all we can do to help everyone stay safe and well is our top priority. Due to the volume of work and number of communications this rearrangement has required and will continue to require, please let us reach out to you directly if possible.

Yours in Service,
The Board of the American Society of Acupuncturists

I just received a call from someone pretending to be from the Virginia Medical Board, appearing to come from an official Virginia DHP phone number, with someone telling me I'm under investigation by the FBI. Feel free to spend some time having fun with these scammers - get as much info as you can - but please don't think this is anything other than a scam. Official communication from the Commonwealth will not be in the form of a phone call "that will be shared with the FBI."

Legislative Update. While the Legislature is in session the ASVA Board and ASVA Lobbyist are working for LAcs in Virginia. Two positive announcements -- LAcs have been added to the list of professionals that would be covered by HB822, which pertains to the reimbursement of services rendered during the insurance credentialing policy (http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?ses=201&typ=bil&val=hb822). And, SB663, which would require practitioners to provide litigation assistance, will not be voted on this year.

FINAL STAGES OF DRY NEEDLING REGULATION

Dear Acupuncturists and Supporters of Acupuncture,

On April 30, 2019, Governor Ralph Northam approved the final draft of the Board of Physical Therapy’s proposed dry needling regulation. This takes us into the final steps of the regulatory process. Before the final regulation is published and takes effect, there is a sixty-day public comment period. This affords us one last opportunity to express our reservations about physical therapists performing dry needling in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This comment period will close on July 26th.

All comments should be submitted through the public forum feature on the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall website. ASVA is asking that you submit a personalized comment sharing your thoughts about this regulation. Our concern is that the proposed regulations are not sufficient to protect the public. If you would like additional information to include in your comment, please visit ASVA's website at:

https://www.acusova.com/Important-Points

To leave a comment, visit:

https://townhall.virginia.gov/L/Comments.cfm?stageid=8144

To review the language of the regulation, visit:

https://townhall.virginia.gov/L/ViewXML.cfm?textid=13315

To review the history of dry needling in Virginia, visit the "Dry Needling - A Timeline" section of our website at:

https://www.acusova.com/Dry-Needling-A-Timeline

Thank you for your participation. We deeply appreciate your efforts in helping ASVA protect public safety in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Please help spread the word about the public comment period. Feel free to share this information on social media and with your patients.

Sincerely,

ASVA Board of Directors

What are the state regulations for treating minors? I had mom call wanting her teenage son to come in but she wasn't able to come with him. When I look it up online it looks like anyone under 18 needs parental consent ( I wouldn't count a phone conversation). Is that true?
Hi! Does anyone in ASVA do housecalls in South Arlington? I have a patient with post-concussion symptoms who would really benefit from a treatment. She can't currently make it to my office due to her symptoms, and my schedule is full for this week and I'm away next week. Both she and her husband have been patients of mine for some time, and I can vouch that this would be a safe environment for the practitioner. If anyone would be up for doing a housecall, please let me know. Thanks so much!
Help, please. Is there a simple list of currently licensed acupuncturists practicing in VA? An old patient has asked me for a referral.
Hi Everyone. I'm currently writing a health care policy paper on the pros and cons of this legislation as it affects Licensed Virginia Acupuncturists. In my Health Care Systems class, there have been a lot of debate as to whether this is going to be positive or negative for the field of Chinese Medicine. Because I am to focus specifically on Virginia and it's laws, does anyone have a strong opinion one way or the other that they wouldn't mind sharing via comment, private message or phone interview? When I write, I like to include interviews and "real life experience" as well as theory. Thanks in Advance. [email protected]
