Washington Street United Methodist Church Welcome to Washington Street United Methodist Church! Let us be your new faith community!
(4)

The congregation at Washington Street Church is open to all persons without regard to race, color, ethnicity, national origin, social status, gender, sexual orientation, age, economic condition or disabilities. We worship, we pray, we doubt, we struggle, we love our hurting world as best we can. We hold each other when we are in pain and we celebrate with each other when it’s time to rejoice. We hope you will join us as we try to hear and discern God’s voice and faithfully serve God and others. Our worship is organic and always evolving to meet the needs of the moment. We celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion every Sunday. Our Sunday worship service is at 10:00 a.m.

Mission: Making a Place for Everyone.

Easter in Exile

Easter in Exile: Build your homes. Live in them. Plant gardens. Go for an (isolated) walk. Enjoy the sunshine. Stay at home and seek the well-being of the community in which you live. Learn to live as Easter people in a time of exile.

Give to the Easter Offering to support the ACT Now COVID-19 Response Fund!

Our last ask on this Spring2ACTion giving day is to provide support for the @ACT for Alexandria ACT Now COVID-19 Response Fund.

As we shared this past Sunday, the Open Table Breakfast Ministry recently received a grant from the ACT Now Response Fund, which has allowed us to begin serving breakfast on Tuesdays at WSUMC. This means that in our partnership with Old Town Community Church and Old Presbyterian Meeting House, breakfast is currently offered Monday - Friday in Old Town.

To give back to the Fund which was made this possible, we're giving our entire Easter Offering to the ACT Now Response Fund. We raised over $4,500 on Easter Sunday, and we're inviting you to help in giving to this fund.

As nonprofit organizations respond to the repercussions of COVID-19, they may become financially vulnerable themselves as they scramble to cover the cost of expanding their services or suspend programs and events that generate revenue. The ACT Now COVID-19 Response Fund was set up to respond to these needs. To date, over $525,000 has been given through the ACT Now fund to support the work of non-profits, churches, and other organizations in the city.

You can give online right now to support the ACT Now fund. Just select "Easter Offering" as the designation at wsumc.com/give.

As we move into the evening hours, we're still going strong with our Spring2ACTion support, highlighting now the work of Just Neighbors.

Just Neighbors is a leading voice and expert resource to the community on immigration issues, regularly giving presentations to local faith-communities, government agencies and other nonprofits. In 2019, staff and volunteers gave 47 presentations on immigration related topics, reaching over 2,143 people, and participated in 32 other outreach events, educating more than 1,200 people.

Over the past 23 years, Just Neighbors has also provided immigration support to over 13,000 individuals from 130 countries. Just Neighbors provides legal support for immigrants for a variety of reasons, helping them to focus their financial resources on things like housing and food, not legal fees.

It doesn't hurt that they were created by the United Methodist Church!

As we continue to celebrate the work of our community partners during Spring2ACTion, our next partner of focus is Neighborhood Health.

Neighborhood Health is the local community health center that has been providing primary medical, dental, and behavioral health care to thousands of our uninsured and underinsured neighbors for more than 22 years. With your help they can serve over 30,000 patients this year.

These services are very meaningful for our Open Table Breakfast Ministry, as many of our guests who are uninsured are able to utilize the services of Neighborhood Health.

Support COMMUNITY LODGINGS INC in #Spring2ACTion! | Spring2ACTion

Our next Spring2ACTion call is to support Community Lodgings.

For over 33 years Community Lodgings has provided safe and stable housing for Alexandria families who are striving to move past homelessness and poverty, language barriers, and economic instability to obtain independence and self-sufficiency. Their 45-units of affordable housing are home to 159 low-income individuals, with six of these units reserved for families referred to us by local shelters. In addition to affordable housing, their programs also serve 200 at-risk children in the community through our out-of-school-time programs, tutoring sessions, mentoring groups and Summer Enrichment Camp. With affordable housing and academic programs, we give families the tools they need to thrive.

When it comes to the COVID-19 impact, few of the families supported by Community Lodgings are unaffected. Their continued housing, educational, and general support of these families is critical.

You can support them online today at https://www.spring2action.org/organizations/community-lodgings-inc

Support ALIVE! in #Spring2ACTion! | Spring2ACTion

Up next in our Spring2ACTion community partners is ALIVE: In good times, ALIVE! provides food, transitional shelter, housewares, furniture, emergency financial assistance and early childhood education every day to those in need. And today, in what has been an incredibly challenging time, ALIVE! has been asked to do even more to ensure that the food continues to reach those in need in the City of Alexandria by asking our community to come together to help.

In the past month, ALIVE! has stepped up their response to COVID-19 by providing meals to families on a more regular basis, and has helped coordinate additional supplies to food pantries and feeding programs throughout the City. They have even provided hundreds of breakfast and snack packs that are helping run the Open Table Breakfast Ministry.

Our first Spring2ACTion partner is the Carpenter's Shelter: The Carpenter's Shelter's comprehensive continuum of care offers continuous services, aiding the chronically homeless and shelter residents through their transition back into independent living. They empower their clients to address the issues which led them to homelessness and provide the tools necessary to achieve lasting independence.

In this COVID-19 season, they have placed their resident families in a local hotel, and have worked with the City of Alexandria to open additional shelter space at the Charles Houston Rec Center to provide temporary housing and meals to our neighbors on the street.

Today is Alexandria's Spring2ACTion, a 24-hour online giving invitation. The date of this year's Spring2ACTion has been moved up a few weeks to offer support to our non-profits in the community who, due to COVID-19, have additional needs at this time to continue their work in the community. We'll be highlighting one community partner each hour for you to support financially. Keep an eye out each hour, on the hour, and as you are able, financially support our partners who are continuing to care for the needs of the community in this challenging season!

Faithfulness Personified

How do you celebrate Easter in the midst of a global pandemic? Here is the good news! God does not wait for us to be ready before acting. God does not need our in-person gathering to do holy work. God preempts any fear, concern, or viral infection through the faithfulness of Jesus, which conquers death to offer us each, and all, new life! Christ is Risen!

Dear Church, Where is our Tuesday night fellowship going to be held on Tuesday night? (I may have missed an announcement.) Thank you!
What an excellent outdoor service and picnic! Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen—especially Taylor Mattson, who was responsible for organizing all the delicious food! 🙂
