Ahope for Children

Ahope for Children AHOPE for Children supports Ethiopian orphans infected with HIV. We have Children's Homes including Group Homes and Independent Living, a Community Development Program for orphaned children living with family in the community.

AHOPE is the only orphanage in Ethiopia serving exclusively HIV+ children. While we started as a hospice for these children over 10 years ago, PEPFAR made anti-retroviral medications (ART) available to people in sub-Saharan Africa and gave our children life. Our children now receive the necessary life saving drugs, education, psycho-social support to lead full lives.

Our AHOPE family mourns the loss of Haileab Gutema. Haileab came to AHOPE when he was 10 years old and was one of our earliest graduates from our program. When he left, he went to pursue a career as a DJ. We are devastated by his death at the age of 24. Haileab suffered from a re-occurrence of TB, along with managing the difficulties of an autoimmune disease during these dangerous times of COVID in Ethiopia. Our love and support goes out to his brothers, sisters and caregivers at AHOPE, Ethiopia. May his memory be a blessing to all who love and mourn him.

Kalkidan lived with her mother in AHOPE’s Community Development Program. A few years ago, her HIV status developed into AIDS. Major health issues ensued, including loss of her eyesight. Throughout this, however, Kalkidan remained joyful, loving, caring and dedicated to learning. Last week Kalkidan passed away. She is mourned by her mother and everyone who was lucky enough to have her in their lives. To quote someone who knew her well “May her beautiful soul rest in peace”.

Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation

In loving memory, Dr Catherine Hamlin AC, 1924 - 2020

It is with great sadness that we are writing this post. Dr Catherine Hamlin, co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, passed away peacefully at her home on the grounds of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia on Wednesday March 18th, 2020. She was 96 years old.

It is a very sad time for those who knew Catherine – her family, her patients, her colleagues and her thousands of supporters around the world.

In this time of sorrow, we reflect upon her life and celebrate it for what it was: a gift to some of the world’s most vulnerable women.

Catherine was always grateful to those who supported her dream of eradicating obstetric fistula in Ethiopia. Thank you for being part of our community. Without you, Catherine’s incredible life's work would not have been possible.

Team Hamlin ❤️

Ethiopia wins the battle of Adwa - African American Registry

In Ethiopia people are celebrating the victory at Adwa back in the late 1800's. This is when Italy tried to colonize Ethiopia and believed Menelik II would be easy to conquer. Long story short; it didn't work and Menelik II claimed victory during the Battle of Adwa.

A repeat of these efforts on the side of Italy was seen during World War II under Mussolini but Haile Selassie prevailed and regained Ethiopia's freedom.

While Italy occupied Ethiopia during WWII, Ethiopia remains the only African country to never have been colonized by any other country. It also explains why Ethiopia has pretty good pizza!

On this date in 1896, Ethiopia defeated the Italian colonial army in the Battle of Adwa. This victory signaled the decline of European colonialism in Black Africa. When Black African Menelik II came to the Ethiopian throne in 1889, the Italians thought that he would surrender power to them because t...

She's changing the cultural stigma around women's periods

Freweini Mebrahtu has been named the 2019 CNN Hero of the Year for her work in bring menstrual sanitary products to the girls of Ethiopia.

"...this is for all the girls and women everywhere. Dignity for all."

https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/02/health/cnnheroes-freweini-mebrahtu-ethiopia-period-menstruation/index.html

Menstruation is still considered taboo in many parts of the world, including Ethopia where one in 10 girls in Ethiopia miss school for reasons related to their periods. But one woman is changing that.
