Sierra Club's Sustainable Metro DC Campaign

Sustainable Metro DC is the voice of 17,000 Sierra Club members in Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia, advocating for a more balanced transportation system that respects pedestrians and bicycle users and prioritizes investment in transit.

Raising gas tax for inflation would have netted millions for transportation http://wtim.es/tuTgcj via @washtimes

An analysis by a nonprofit tax-policy institute says that Maryland and Virginia could have collected hundreds of millions of dollars per year since their last gas-tax increases if they had raised the tax regularly to account for inflation.

Short (time-lapse) video of how Metro is preparing for the Silver Line! http://tbd.ly/tjbP2k

Everyone loves a good time-lapse video, and Metro has taken advantage of our fondness in offering up a two-minute time-lapse of September track work from the West Falls Church Metro station. The work happened during one of WMATA's weekend marathons, and as the Orange Line shut down in places, worker...

Transit advocates push for transit benefits extension as deadline nears | Washington Examiner

"Metro officials have estimated that a drop in the benefit would cost the agency 2.8 percent of its already faltering ridership." Transit and driving benefits should be equal. http://bit.ly/rEmhzn

Transit advocates are pushing anew for an extension of federal transit benefits now that the congressional supercommittee convened to reduce the deficit has called it quits. But they are running out of time -- the benefits that give commuters up to $230 per month to take transit are slated to drop ...

Metro has greatly benefitted the D.C. region since its creation. More metro please!

Rail~Volution 2011 marks the first time since 2002 that this conference for all things transit and smart growth has taken place in the nation’s capital. When it comes to livability, Washington and neighboring Arlington County have some great stories to share with the rest of the country.

2012 called crucial year for Md. gas tax

Maryland needs to raise an additional $800 million in transportation revenue annually. This total could be reached with a 10-cent-per-gallon increase in the gas tax, a rise in the vehicle registration fee and the resulting increase in the state's bonding capacity. Without the tax increase Maryland's transportation will suffer.

If Maryland is to raise significant new revenue to meet its backlog of transportation needs — most likely through a higher gas tax — 2012 is the year it must be done, a leading lawmaker told a gathering of Baltimore business leaders Monday.

Maryland assembly may put off gas-tax hike - Washington Times

If you're in Maryland tell you're representatives that you want the gas tax raised to help support public transit. The gas tax hasn't been raised since 1992!

A Senate leader in the Democrat-controlled General Assembly said Wednesday that a proposal to increase the state's gas tax might get shelved during its 2012 session because of anticipated budget woes and public outcry.

Sen. Tom Coburn is trying to remove all funding for Bikes and Pedestrians!

For the last few days, we’ve been talking a lot about Sen. Tom Coburn’s crusade to remove bike/ped funding from the transportation bill — even just from the six-month extension that just passed the House and is on its way to the Senate. He’s determined to insert an amendment to take out the funds.

Invest in Transportation Choices: Not New Toll Roads

If you're in Virginia take action and tell Virginia Gov McDonnell, we need transportation choices, not more new roads!

Rather than building a 55-mile-long toll road (that could cost as much as $11 to drive on!), Gov. McDonnell should be focused on easing the congestion choke points that cause folks to sit in traffic every day.

Interesting article about working together to create positive changes for Metro.

Online critics of WMATA like Unsuck DC Metro and FixWMATA have shone valuable light on Metro failings and built pressure for change. But online shaming can only do so much to change an agency. I hope they will take the next step and get involved in actually trying to push for reform.
