Transitional housing program for women and children homeless as a result of domestic violence.
Did you know that one of out of every four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime? (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence). When families come to Safe Places they are fleeing abuse. They hope that with some help they can provide a safe and loving place for their children to live in a place free from violence. Safe Places is a 24-month transitional housing program serving families throughout Fairfax County, Virginia who are homeless as a result of domestic violence. Program participants are involved in weekly or bi-weekly case management sessions, or home visits. These meetings focus on budgeting, permanent housing searches and the overall goal of obtaining self-sufficiency. All of the families are referred to the program through Fairfax County emergency shelters including, but not limited to, Bethany House of Northern Virginia and Shelter House’s Artemis House. Each head of household is required to work or attend school for at least 30 hours per week and their monthly rent is based on 30% of their income. With your help, Safe Places can provide support for mothers to: •obtain a certificate or degree •enroll in job training courses •cover car repairs and transportation fees
Mission: The Mission of Safe Places is to provide families who are homeless as a result of domestic violence with safety and shelter while empowering them to break the cycle and live free of abuse.

Safe Places is lending a hand to flood victims of North Carolina. Mount Vernon, Virginia resident Margaret Shipp, a volunteer with BRAWS (Bringing Resources to Aid Women’s Shelters), stopped by the Virginia headquarters of Safe Places Friday morning to collect 2,340 disposable diapers on her way to distribute them along with cases of women’s hygiene items to flood victims in North Carolina.
Shipp was on her way to the small town of Salemburg where she would be delivering them to the Salemburg Christian Food Bank which serves an average of more than 500 families per month, and is in desperate need of diapers for mothers with infants and toddlers.
“This is great!” exclaimed Shipp as we filled her vehicle up to the brim with diapers donated to BRAWS by Safe Places.
Many of our families are included in the 1 in 8 people in the US who experience food insecurity. This #HungerActionMonth we want to thank Food for Others & Britepaths for their work in helping feed our community. We know our families appreciate the help.
