La Leche League of Old Town Alexandria

La Leche League of Old Town Alexandria La Leche League is an all volunteer breastfeeding mother-to-mother support group.
Old Town Alexandria's monthly evening group is dedicated to all nursing parents, especially working mothers. We meet every 3rd Tuesday at BirthCare, located at 1501 King Street at 7:30 pm. Partners are welcome. The breastfeeding cafe meets the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 11am-12:30pm at St. Elmo's Coffee Pub in Del Ray, 2300 Mount Vernon Avenue. LLL Leaders are volunteers who help breastfeeding families fulfill their bf goals.

LLL Alexandria is run by trained volunteers, who are mommies dedicated to helping breastfeeding families succeed. We don't have official "hours of operation," because life isn't that scripted. We want to help you when you need help, so reach out even if it's a weekend or holiday! We kindly ask for no phone calls after 9pm or before 8am, as we have little ones of our own to love on. You are always welcome to send a pm here or email: [email protected] and we'll get back to you just as soon as we can.

Mission: Our Mission is to help parents worldwide to breastfeed through support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and breastfeeding parent.

Wondering how to get through the holidays while nursing your baby? Join us tonight at 7:30pm at BirthCare, 1501 King Street. Nursing parents, babies, children, partners and parents-to-be welcome!

People often say to be cautious of eating peppermint candies or treats during the holidays. Though peppermint essential oils should be avoided, no studies have found a link between peppermint candies with loss of supply. However, many families do struggle with maintaining nursing frequency during the holidays. Try to keep baby close and milk flowing (with either baby or pump) even while traveling, shopping, or visiting family and friends.

If you would like to support our group, please consider a donation. Funds are used for outreach materials, LLLI group and leader dues, and breastfeeding continuing education. Annually, this amounts to about $200, which leaders pay from personal funds when the group treasury is not sufficient.

Giving is easy. Every dollar is appreciated and every dollar makes a difference! You can make a donation through PayPal (send funds to family/friends option) to the email: [email protected]. We also accept cash or checks (made out to: La Leche League Alexandria). Your donation is tax deductible as allowable by law. #GivingTuesday

Happy Independence Day weekend! Know that your baby will have plenty of time to be independent of you. For now, she is relying on you for nutrition, increased immunity, and emotional support. And if any family or friends decide to pull the "why are you still nursing?" card, here are some facts for consideration. Enjoy the long holiday weekend! May your baby sleep through the fireworks!

Breastmilk doesn't stop being nutritious!!

La Leche League celebrates 60 years of service in 2016. We were started by 7 women in Chicago who believed breastfeeding was beneficial to their families and wanted to share information and this sacred relationship with others. Today, we lost one of those women. We are forever thankful to Mary White and the other founders who had a vision of supporting families on this incredible journey. http://breastfeedingtoday-llli.org/tribute-to-llli-co-founder-mary-white/

We are mourning the loss of Mary White, one of the seven La Leche League Founders, who has died aged 93. We send our condolences to all her friends and family and are grateful for all her marvelous work for mothers and babies worldwide.

Those little hands...

Did your baby's hands always seem to be in the way in the early weeks of breastfeeding? Here's an interesting article from our friends at LLL Canada about how babies use their hands to help facilitate latch.

Kudos to our former VA Leader Nikki Nekisha Killings for this well-deserved recognition! You may have interacted with her at the LLL breastfeeding cafe at St. Elmo's, which she started, or at the Live Love Latch! August event, which she also helped to create nationwide. She is the impetus behind many good things breastfeeding-related and has served so many bf families with grace and pride. Ever thought you'd like to be a LLL Leader? Send us a pm and let's talk!

All this week we are featuring Leaders and the reasons why they choose to be part of La Leche League in honor of National Volunteer Week. Could leadership be right for you too?

The Breastfeeding Deduction, And Other Tax Breaks New Parents Should Know

So we aren't tax professionals, LLL helps those who feed their babies with breastmilk. But a little birdie tells us.... Women who have a flexible spending account (FSA) can use pre-tax dollars to help cover the cost of breast pumps, as well as "supplies that assist lactation." Women who don't have an FSA are able to deduct breastfeeding supply costs if -- and this is a biggie -- their out-of-pocket medical costs for the year exceed 10 percent of their income...This article gives more information. As always, consult your tax professional. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/a-breastfeeding-deduction-and-other-tax-breaks-for-parents_us_568ff7c2e4b0cad15e6490d1

Okay, I'm officially ready to start getting my body right. I'm fat and uncomfortable and since I can't afford a plastic surgeon, I will settle for eating right and exercising. I will start tomorrow! But I'm not giving up a glass of wine (or 2) every now and again.
Is there somewhere I can find an IBCLC that will work with me? I need someone that accepts United Healthcare insurance and can help me troubleshoot some problems I'm having. Help please!
