In response to the COVID-19 virus, Maryville Kiwanis has decided to not hold our regularly scheduled meetings on Tuesday at noon at Green Meadow Country Club. This impacts our meeting today and our meeting next week, March 24th. We will reevaluate our decision on Friday, March 27th considering the CDC guidelines and the recommendations from Kiwanis International.

We are a club with big hearts and even bigger determination to impact the lives of children in Blount County. We can't do that effectively and safely if our members are sick and/or if we are carriers of the virus. Thank you for your understanding and continued support during this unprecedented time in our country.

We hope that everyone will head the recommendations from the CDC on how to prevent getting or spreading this virus.

I wish you all good health and a great supply of toilet paper.

Maryville Kiwanis meetings are always both fun and informative -- last week, we heard from our own Clay Kriese, Youth Services Librarian at Blount County Public Library, and Robert McClelland, Alcoa Kiwanian and member of the Blount County Friends of the Library. It's great to hear about the many things our wonderful library does for the community, and we're proud to support them in supporting literacy and families. Thanks, Robert and Clay! Don't miss today's meeting for another fascinating and important program.

Friday Trivia: Did you know? Aluminum is one of the most readily recyclable materials around -- it only takes about 60 days for aluminum to go from your recycling bin to a new product on the shelf!
Why are we delving into industrial engineering today? The Key Clubs are collecting the pull tabs off of aluminum cans; these compact and readily portable sources of aluminum can be sold to recyclers and refashioned into new products, while the Key Clubs' young leaders collect the money earned. It's win-win! (And don't forget to recycle the rest of the can on your own after pulling the tab for Key Club.) So pop those pop-tops and bring them to Kiwanis to help out Key Clubbers, and the environment, too.

Friday trivia: Did you know? Maryville Kiwanis' own Patsy Russell is nominated for the prestigious Athena Award, to be presented January 23. The award, which honors women leaders in the community, will be presented at a gala banquet at the Clayton Center, to be emceed by Blount County Mayor (and Maryville Kiwanian) Ed Mitchell and Lisa Skinner. Our organization has a great record of Athena winners, including last year's honoree, Regina Jennings -- we're proud that our members' hard work and dedication is so noteworthy! Friday Trivia: Did you know? Maryville Kiwanis pledged to do 100 hours of community service to celebrate our centennial this year. And we succeeded! Our seven challenge teams each logged far more than the goal of 100 hours; in fact, they averaged 567.7 hours per team! The total was 3,974 hours by the 39 team members. Wow! What a great way to honor Maryville Kiwanis' 100th year and help the community at the same time.

Christmas is a season of friendship and fellowship, and what better way to celebrate both than with our weekly "Member Moments"? We love hearing more about our members -- and making new friends along the way. Last week, Pete Davis (re-)introduced veteran member John Allen to us, and we loved John's writeup so much, we're posting the whole thing. Don't miss today's special Christmas meeting for our last Member Moment of the year -- and a chance to ask John about his escapades!
Member Moment: John Allen
John was born in Columbus, Ohio and worked in the insurance business for 40 years. He served in the Air Force which he described as the thing that happened during his life that changed him into who he is today. He worked in the air force base control center in the 1950's and it made him a better man and how to be better organized. During the Korean War he add with some humor that he did not go to Korea but was instead assigned Tripoli in Libya to protect the back door.

The greatest lesson he learned in life is to have a close family. He and wife Pollie have five children all over the world.

His greatest piece of advice is to make sure you understand what you are doing and how it will affect others. Be honest and truthful.

The craziest thing he ever did was to try hitch hiking back home to Ohio during a blizzard in 1950. He wound up stranded and was AWOL from his post as a result.

Honesty, diversity, fun, being with and helping other people are what make being in Kiwanis special to him.
