Good Morning
CSEA has learned from the Office of the State Comptroller that the contractual 2 percent salary increases that were withheld last April will now start appearing in paychecks for state employees in the Administrative payroll on May 12, and in the Institutional payroll on May 20. CSEA members are in the first group of state employees to receive their negotiated salary increases.

CSEA celebrates Black History Month
If you have received this month’s CSEA Work Force, or read any of the articles online, you will see that we are celebrating Black History Month and recognizing the accomplishments and struggles of African Americans. We are also posting relevant content on social media throughout the month. As a union that advocates for economic and social justice, we cannot ignore the deep ties between workers’ rights and civil rights. We will always fight for everyone to be treated with respect, dignity, equity and inclusion, in the workplace and beyond. These are values we should all unite around. You can read more about my perspective on unity in my February President’s column, available online at: https://tinyurl.com/unity-message

Statewide scholarship applications now available
The application period for our statewide scholarships is now open. From now until April 15, eligible children or grandchildren of CSEA members can apply to win one of our 18 Irving Flaumenbaum Scholarships, plus be eligible for the Met Life and Pearl Insurance Awards. Download a copy of the 2021 scholarship application form and a workplace poster you can use to promote the scholarships at: https://cseany.org/scholarships

State Budget update
This week, Fran Turner, Director of CSEA’s Legislative and Political Action Department, testified in front of the New York State Senate and Assembly to comment on the Governor’s proposed budget. CSEA opposed the proposed closures and elimination of services within the Office of Mental Health and Office of Children and Family Services, the elimination of local government assistance, and attacks on the health insurance of retirees. All members are encouraged to contact their region Political Action Coordinator and get involved in stopping these harmful cuts to state and local government programs. CSEA’s complete testimony is available at: https://tinyurl.com/csea-budget-testimony2021

Federal aid update
The Governor’s proposed state budget is directly tied to President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion aid package. This aid package includes $350 billion in state and local aid that is needed to fill the budget gaps found in NYS and our local governments. This is likely our last shot to get this needed aid to protect services and jobs! We invite you to find out more and how you can do your part. Join our Legislative & Political Action Department’s webinar titled: “Our Last Shot, CSEA’s campaign to help our state and local governments.”

We are offering several different dates and times over the next week to accommodate members’ work and home schedules as much as possible. Please choose one of the following meeting times that works best for you and follow the instructions to register.

Monday, February 8 – 7:00pm – Register at https://tinyurl.com/last-shot-feb8
Tuesday, February 9 – 10:00am – Register at https://tinyurl.com/last-shot-feb9-morning

Wednesday, February 10 – 6:30pm – Register at https://tinyurl.com/last-shot-feb10
Thursday, February 11 – 4:00pm – Register at https://tinyurl.com/last-shot-feb11
Legislative update
CSEA submitted a memo to the Senate Committee on Disabilities in support of legislation that would require legislative approval at least one-year in advance prior to the closure of any OCFS, OMH or OPWDD facility. Read CSEA's memo in support of this legislation at: https://tinyurl.com/facility-closure-memo

Wall calendars still available
Due to the pandemic, our distribution of CSEA wall calendars was more limited, leaving us with additional calendars left over. If you haven’t already gotten or requested one, within the next two weeks please visit: https://cseany.org/calendar-form. You must be logged into our site to access and fill out the order form. We will mail out your calendar to you.

Reminder: we’re still seeking a name for our women’s issues newsletter
A reminder that we are still seeking suggestions through the end of next week to come up with a new name for the revival of our quarterly women’s issues newsletter, formerly known as “Essentially Women.” This publication focuses on issues concerning working women and their families, while also highlighting the exceptional work of CSEA women. To submit your suggestions, please visit https://tinyurl.com/csea-womens-newsletter-survey and complete the survey by next Friday, Feb. 12.

Farewell John Sweeney
My condolences go out to the family and friends of labor leader John Sweeney. John was a longtime New York activist in the labor movement, who passed away this week at 86. From 1995 to 2009, John served as president of the American “House of Labor,” the AFL-CIO. In the labor movement, we consider ourselves one big family, and we mourn his loss with the rest of our union family. To read more about him, visit https://tinyurl.com/john-sweeney-obituary
