From 20-22 October, members of Civil Air Patrol's Georgia Wing volunteered to serve at the Wings Over North Georgia Airshow in Rome, Georgia. Working in positions like Flightline, Crowdline, and Parking, members across the field and at the CAP Exhibit worked hard all weekend. To those members and their families who worked so hard to make this weekend happen, thank you!

Some practical information for those preparing to evacuate from the Coast:
*Evacuation is mandatory for all coastal counties in the areas east of I95 by Saturday *Glynn County EMS is more stringent and moved its evac to Friday
*it is generally suggested to turn off your A.C. prior to leaving your home due to electrical hazard upon return and power surge potential.
*I95 and I75 are experiencing tremendously heavy traffic due to Florida evacuees already on the road. Your PAO traveled today and back roads are generally moving smoothly for now. As the mandatory evac deadline approaches that will change.
*Get some ready cash. If power goes out your cards will not work. Cash in small denominations is best; gas stations and food locations may not readily make change for larger bills. The Governor has enacted a no gouging policy; however, that is NOT the same as not making change for a purchase. Have cash. And, have a couple of rolls of quarters in the event you must visit a laundromat.
*you should have clothing / supplies for at least 7 days. Just because the storm itself has passed does not mean you can return home immediately. Power lines, sewage, downed trees, standing water...your local EMS needs to secure the infrastructure first.
*water: 1 gallon per day per person plus a supply for pets. Take your pet's current vaccination information; people forget this and it may be critical for vet, shelter or emergency care
*take all prescription meds with you. Any pharmacy in the US can transfer to another. If you are using a major chain, they will have your info anywhere.
*evac with your ID, all of it. License, CAP card, passport, social security card, birth certificate, etc. Items in safety deposit boxes may not be accessible for some time in flood and wind damaged areas. All important docs should go with you.
*Finally, if you are in a non-affected part of the state and have extra room, please reach out to your fellow CAP members with shelter. Hotel rooms are non-existent for new reservations.

Here is a statement issued from DOK about the Operations/Communications exercise this week:

This week’s national CAP operational exercise took the next step in refining an already-effective system for passing radio messages to task air and ground sorties when commercial communications systems are unavailable. CAP’s exercise was part of a larger multi-agency no-notice exercise coordinated by the Department of Defense.

Built on the assumption that all regular commercial communications systems had failed in the United States, the CAP radio network relayed a series of messages from the exercise manager, playing the role of CAP’s National Operations Center, to CAP wings across the country. Most of the tasking and reports back were tabletop in nature, meaning that no actual aircraft or ground teams were dispatched.

Three actual demonstration aircraft sorties were flown and a fourth was assigned but not flown due to weather. Not all region nets have reported yet, but at least 91 HF stations around the country checked into the exercise nets. Fifty-one formal exercise messages were injected into the CAP radio nets during the exercise for delivery and reply.

In an actual national emergency, CAP would be tasked with missions such as airborne damage assessment, confirming serviceability of airports and major highways, and possible light airlift. Radio communications represents the survivable path by which such sorties would be assigned and reported back to the national “customer” agency when regular communications systems are unavailable.

In past CAP exercises, most radio messages have been relayed via the national CAP radio nets. A goal of this week’s exercise was to shift as much traffic as possible to the region-level radio nets and to make more use of HF-ALE systems to deliver radio messages directly to wing message center stations. Additional analysis will be needed to determine the effectiveness of those strategies.

Feedback from participants will be requested in the near future via a SurveyMonkey questionnaire. Based on that data, and other metrics, an After Action Report will be prepared that identifies strengths and weaknesses, as well as goals for future exercises.

Late yesterday, Civil Air Patrol reached 100,000 flying hours for Fiscal Year 2016 across its fleet of aircraft. In Fiscal Year 2015 on this same date CAP had flown 93,256 hours, making this an over 7% increase in CAP’s flying at this time over last year. Why has CAP flown more this year? CAP is always looking for new opportunities for its members to fly in support of their communities across the country, while continuing to do continuing to prepare for and respond to emergencies when needed. In comparison to last year, the largest area of growth in terms of flying hours for missions has been in disaster relief flying; CAP has flown over 850 more hours in this area than it did in FY15 supporting 46 different disaster missions across the country from Flooding in South Carolina at the beginning of the fiscal year to Hurricane Hermine support in Florida over the last week. CAP members have also flown over 1,000 more hours to train to support these missions this year. We don’t often know where the next disaster will be, but CAP works to be prepared all the time.

Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Encampment Assistance Program, which was launched last year with $490,000 in United States Air Force grant money and enabled more than 1,400 cadets to attend wing encampments throughout the nation, has proven even more successful this year. The number of CEAP cadets attending encampments in fiscal year 2016 has risen by 60 percent, to 2,225, according to CAP Cadet Programs. http://goo.gl/UtMkn1

Excellent job to the Civil Air Patrol's Cell Phone Forensics Team!

Civil Air Patrol’s Cell Phone Forensics team assisted the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast after it requested cell forensics from the United States Air Force Rescue Coordination Center in locating a family of four, including two children 11 and 15 years old, whose boat failed to return from a snorkeling trip off Key West, Florida. The family had been missing since Tuesday. Cell phone data provided by CAP’s team shifted the search area significantly, resulting in the find and four lives saved.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the boaters were in good spirits and good health. America's AOC
