TODAY! Thursday, June 17 at 4:00PM-5:00PM

Our Co-Chair, Kyle James, will be joining NYSUT - A Union of Professionals's LGBTQ Committee for a panel discussion on the importance of GSA's in schools!

As you may know, GSA's are student-led, safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA+ students.
Stories from students, teachers/admin, and statistics tell us that the presence of a GSA in schools make them safer, more inclusive, and dramatically reduce the risk of anti-LGBTQIA+ harassment/ discrimination and potential for self-harm- while heightening the potential for LGBTQIA+ students to graduate high school, and feel more confident living authentically.

GSA's are nothing short of life changing.

🌈📣It's #2020GraduationSeason and GLSEN Upstate New York is celebrating our graduating SHINE Team members! One of our SHINE-ing new graduates is Tessa! Read about why she joined GLSEN Upstate NY's SHINE Team and how being part of the SHINE Team has shaped them. We are so proud of you and can't wait to see what the future has in store for Tessa!

"I joined SHINE my freshman year of high school, so in late 2016. My favorite SHINE memory has been every Breaking the Silence events; the energy and joy in that room has always been amazing, and it's so nice to see that what we're doing is really helping people.

I learned how to be loud and proud about who I am, and that it's okay to not always know who you are or where you're going. I've also learned how to effectively help others who are reaching out for it, so my communication skills have gotten a lot better.

I plan on going to SUNY Oswego for Journalism and Theater, and my goal is to continue advocating through my writing once I graduate.

SHINE has prepped me by helping me learn how to communicate my thoughts to others, along with teaching me that if I have ideas in mind, to speak up about them."

GLSEN Upstate NY - Living Educator and Youth Racial Justice-Oriented Resources Document

It’s the beginning of Pride Month, and Black Lives STILL Matter. GLSEN Upstate New York/GLSEN New York Capital Region strongly supports and stands with our LGBTQ+ youth, our educators, and our surrounding community, but especially our Black youth, students, educators, and community members.

As a GLSEN chapter whose mission is to create and maintain safe, affirming, equitable, and inclusive K-12 schools, we stand firm in our commitment to dismantling the institutions that have historically and systematically disenfranchised the most marginalized in our communities.

And, it is not lost on us as an organization, that our country is built upon the backs of Black lives and our foundation is rooted in deliberate and systemic racist ideals woven and maintained by generations of white supremacy. We know that continuous police violence towards Black people is a symptom of our country’s inherently racist foundation.

Our chapter continues to fight for justice and reparations for the generations' worth of trauma our Black youth, students, educators, and community members have endured. We not only support but continue to be committed to doing the work to dismantle these systems of oppression. We also recognize that we are a predominantly white board and continue to and continue our commitment to re-educating ourselves and acknowledging our own biases and privileges we hold.

We not only support our LGBTQ+ K-12 youth but also our educators. We see how our teachers educate their students about racial justice, white supremacy, and how to be active allies. We call on educators, especially our white educators, to continue their commitment and dedication to re-educating not only themselves on their inherent biases and privileges, but also their students. Know that we see you, hear you, and support you in this critical work. If this work is new to you, we call on you to make this radical shift in your classrooms.

To be clear – we, as a chapter, strongly condemn police violence. We support the Black Lives Matter movement. We support the protestors, marches, rallies, and ALL expressions of protest across the country. We say the names and honor George Floyd, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and so many others.

With that being said, we want to provide direct resources for our LGBTQ+ K-12 youth, our students, our educators, and our community who look to us for guidance. We call on community members, especially our white community members, to dedicate time to re-learning and re-educating themselves about systemic racism, biases and privileges. Together, we can end practices that marginalize Black people and stand with all people who are working for an equitable, just world. Also, we call on you to give directly to Black organizers, Black organizations, Black businesses, and those on the frontlines.

See here for educator-specific and youth-oriented racial justice informational resources:

See here for ways to directly give to Black organizers, Black organizations, Black businesses, and those on the frontlines both nationally and in the Capital Region: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ksO5XzK02dP30k2U9jm1UfEJk2065fzuGRCnUHlFqtg/edit?usp=sharing

If you have any questions or additional needs, please email our chapter at [email protected]. We will be happy to direct you in ways to get involved to the best of our ability.

In solidarity,
GLSEN Upstate NY/GLSEN New York Capital Region Board
