PSIA-AASI Eastern Division is excited to announce the next two presentations in our Off-Season Webinar series. 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐲 will be offered twice next week with different perspectives each time.

Our first Eastern Division Webinar was a huge success last week with nearly 500 members logging in to watch a presentation by Dave Taylor on boot fitting!! We are going to keep this good thing rolling - we are proud to present our second Webinar Wednesday next week – Wednesday July 1st at 4PM.

Don’t miss out on another awesome opportunity for some off season E-Learning and register for:

Movement Description without Prescription

Presented by Nate Gardner

In this second webinar, we will take a look at how we go about describing ski to snow performance and body performance without critique or feedback for change. This is an important process for when we are taking certification exams and for how we develop relationships based on trust with our students.

In case you haven’t skied with him before, Nate Gardner is the Training Manager for the Ski and Snowboard School at Stowe Mountain Resort, an active Examiner with the Eastern Division, and a member of the Eastern Alpine Team looking forward to his second tryout for the PSIA/AASI National Team in April, 2021 at Breckenridge, CO.

This next webinar will have a small fee to participate, $15.00. Once registering and paying for the webinar, keep an eye out for registration access instructions, which will be e-mailed separately.

You can register for the webinar here:

We had 500 people sign up for our first webinar which was a great surprise to all of us! The platform that provides the webinar service can only handle a certain amount of participants and we have reached that limit.

If you were unable to register, the good news is that we are going to be recording this webinar and posting it on our website so you can watch it at your convenience.

In addition, we will be offering a number of other webinars throughout the summer and into the fall that you will be able to participate in.

Stay tuned to our website and page for those announcements!

The Alpine Boot and the Body

Presented by David Taylor

Wednesday, June 17th at 4PM

Stance, Alignment, Foot Beds, Canting, Ramp Angle, and Forward Lean are some of the topics discussed every day when someone says SKI BOOTS. What do these words mean? Why are they important? What do we do with a ski boot? Let us dive into answering these questions by taking a journey into the relationship between the skier, the hardware, and how boot fitters work with skiers to achieve proper set up. This presentation will include topics such as: boot fitting methods, opinions, philosophies, boot design, physiology, and anatomy.

Please register for Stance and Alignment - David Taylor on Jun 17, 2020 4:00 PM EDT at:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO EASTERN DIVISION MEMBERS: While we understand and hope that your priorities are focused on family and health these days, some of you have already expressed concerns about the upcoming PSIA-AASI membership renewal period for the 2020-21 season that begins (along with our fiscal year) on July 1, 2020.

On behalf of the Eastern Division Board of Directors and your professional staff and with thanks to PSIA-AASI CEO Nick Herrin for his support, I am pleased to announce several steps we are taking to provide additional assistance to those of our members facing financial challenges:

1) In consideration of the hardships many of you are experiencing as we struggle through the Coronavirus crisis, we are offering a three-month extension to October 1 for payment of dues without any late fees to those of you in need due to lost or reduced employment.

2) Also, if you are able to renew by July 1 you can do so easily, automatically and with smaller ($35.25 each) payments spread throughout the year with our quarterly auto-pay (QAP) option!

3) We will also be looking to earmark a portion of our greatly expanded Member Scholarship Program to members wanting to take educational programs in 2020-21 and whose income and employment status has been negatively impacted by the Coronavirus health crisis.

We hope these steps will be reassuring and helpful to those in our community that need it so that you can stay focused on the things in your life far more important than PSIA-AASI membership! Stay tuned for more details via e-mail and social media in May.

Below is our own version of an AASI-inspired COVID-19 rainbow shot at ProJam 2019. We share it here to help spread hope and good wishes amid the Coronavirus self-isolation period for our Eastern PSIA-AASI community. Better days ahead!

Attention Eastern Members! On Friday, March 27 you should have received a broadcast e-mail from the Eastern Division office. One was sent to new members that joined during the 2019-20 season and the other to existing members that had renewed in 2019-20. Photos of the e-mails are shown below.

If you did NOT receive an e-mail please do one of the following as we want to make sure you receive our communications during this challenging time as well as in the coming months when we get back on track in prep for the 2020-21 season:
1) Go to the national PSIA-AASI website at https://www.thesnowpros.org, log in with your email address and password, click on My Profile (upper right next to Log In) and check to make sure your e-mail address as shown on your profile is current and correct.

2) If #1 checks out okay, then check the SPAM or JUNK folder of your e-mail inbox and make sure that e-mails from any psia-e.org addresses are not being blocked. If so, change your settings to allow e-mail from our domain.

That should do it. Thanks, stay safe and keep active!

This week's Eastern Team Member is:
Pete Novom
PSIA-E Alpine Examiner

Q: When did / What made you decide you wanted to be on the National Team?
A: I was pretty young when I met a National Team member for the first time. They showed me what an instructor could be. They raised the bar on what I was capable of and hoped to be!

Q: What has helped you the most in your journey to try out?
A: Mentor-ship and encouragement have had a huge impact on me. I hope to continue that trend for the next generation of ski instructors.

Q: What is the one piece of advice you would give someone hoping to try out for the National Team one day?
A: As this is my first tryout that is a tough question. I would however say that putting yourself in situations that challenge you is possibly the most important training you can have.

Q: What do you like to do in the off-season to stay in shape mentally and physically for snow?
A: I run a lot - this along with mountain biking, gravel cycling and any excuse to get outside!

Q:What skier/snowboarder's poster would we see on the wall of your bedroom as a kid?
A: JP Auclair and Glen Plake. Plake came to my mountain as a kid and I had the pleasure of watching him try some of his first rails.

Q: What is your favorite type of terrain to ski/ride?
A: I love challenging snow! Ungroomed, icy, moguls trees, powder slush and more...

ANNOUNCEMENT ON EASTERN OFFICE STAFFING:
To make a small contribution to slowing the potential spread of COVID-19, Eastern Division staff will be working remotely for the dates of Wednesday, 3/18 - Friday, 3/20/20. During this time all staff will be available via e-mail and phone (we have call forwarding to our cell phones and you can prompt the system for the staff directory by name) and there should be no disruption (although potentially slight delays) in response time and available assistance to members. We will reassess our in-office staffing on Monday, 3/23.

We will do our best to balance social responsibility with assistance to you our members and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

I was fortunate to spend a sunny but sad and surreal Sunday at Gore Mountain, NY today. As it turned out, my wife and I were amongst their last resort guests of this season as they, along with most other resorts in the Northeast, have now ceased operations.

Normally, we are “all about the hill” and the bigger, the better. Not this time. I am proud and appreciative of the overwhelmingly supportive responses we have received from PSIA-AASI Eastern members for making the difficult decision on Friday, March 13 to help to “flatten the curve” of this “virus hill” by cancelling the balance of our Eastern event season and, in doing so, becoming part of the solution to this global health crisis.

I believe that was our only socially responsible action to take at a time when there was clearly no other priority or purpose worth saving. Our Eastern Division operations can recover and our members can continue their educational experiences and professional development with us next year and for many years to come.

Thank you for your understanding and support. Stay safe and enjoy all the simple pleasures you can with family and friends while we all work our way through the challenging weeks and months to come.

IMPORTANT CORONAVIRUS COVID-19 UPDATE FOR EASTERN DIVISION MEMBERS

Good afternoon,

At 11:30 this morning we made the difficult but socially-responsible and prudent decision to cancel the rest of our exams and events for the balance of the season. This affects 102 events and 989 registered attendees in all disciplines including exams, tryouts and specialist events.

This decision reflects, respects and joins the incredible sacrifices being made by major sports leagues and events to cancel in order to minimize risk of exposure and spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19. While we recognize the dedication and efforts of our members to prepare for exams and participate in events we also recognize that you will have another opportunity to do so in the coming seasons. As disappointing as that is for you and for us as the organization that serves you, we cannot justify any activity the contributes to health risks for our PSIA-AASI Eastern community or the general population.

Important: All members that signed up for events and exams will receive a full refund for the event fee in the coming weeks. Please be patient as this process will take considerable time to reconcile and process.

In addition, all members that signed up for events and need continuing education credits will be exempted from paying any delinquency fee for having not earned your education credit this season. You will have all next season as well to obtain and update your continuing education credits. That said, we encourage you to consider taking one of our online educational courses as a safe (no travel or exposure) option that can earn you 6 credits per course. This is not a requirement -- just a suggestion should you want to complete your educational update this season. You can find out more at the following link on our Eastern Division website: https://www.psia-e.org/ed/online-courses/

As you can imagine, we are in the highest state of activity and action at this point to handle this rapidly changing situation. However, if you have any questions please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or call our office at 518-452-6095.

We are very sorry to share this news with you and hope you can understand our rationale for doing so. Stay safe, healthy and please stay in touch with us (and each other) in the coming weeks and months via this and other Eastern FB pages and groups.

To all my skier friends who used to windsurf or want to windsurf. SKIING & WINDSURFING To ride on snow is like riding on water using the wind power. The surface is always changing. Windsurfing is a way to ride on water slow or fast, and now with windsurf foiling you can ride the underwater foil like deep powder. Simple, gnarly, fast, slow SUP windsurfing, freestyle, slalom, long distance, racing, carving, spinning, hydro-foiling.....windsurfing has it all.....something for all. It's never to late to learn and have a second childhood and I know a lot of PSIA-AASI instructors used to windsurf. Get back to the water and windsurf again or for the first time. If you want to learn to windsurf, foil upon a windsurfer, teach windsurfing, we have a new Windsurfing Instructors and Programs Association (WIPA). #windsurfingipa.org. Get certified. WIPA is under US Windsurfing #uswindsurfing.org. and is the recognized certification body by US Sailing. The USA has one of the world's best windsurfing gurus in the world, Andy Brandt.
