We know everybody's hearts are heavy due to the situation in Afghanistan. Want to help? Read on. Tens of thousands of Afghan refugees fleeing their country need to be resettled around the world. Many will resettle right here in Albany, NY, including those who worked side-by-side with the U.S. Government and Military over the past 20 years. The West Hill Refugee Welcome Center is a local non-profit that provides housing and other long-term support services to people who are refugees and who resettle in Albany NY. We have a house acquired through the Community Land Bank lined up for an Afghan family of 10 (mother, father, 8 children). However, it needs significant repairs for it to be habitable. We will post pictures of the project's progress along the way. Please consider donating to this very important cause. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

The situation in Afghanistan is heartbreaking. We at the West Hill Refugee Welcome Center (RWC) stand by our Afghan friends with love and, just as important, support. Many Americans are witnessing images of families desperate to leave the only home they’ve ever known. Most of us can only imagine the conditions that would lead someone to uproot their lives to find a safe place to live in peace and raise their children. If you are wondering how you can help, there are many organizations like the RWC whose mission it is to provide safety and support as terrified displaced families attempt to rebuild their lives here in the US. This takes resources. If you would like to help, please consider donating or volunteering to support the cause at:

About a dozen RWC kids joined Ms. P (Preem) on Saturday morning at the Albany Boys and Girls Club for some beginner boxing training and workouts. Joining them were an almost equal number of Albany Police Department recruits a couple weeks away from completion of their own training. Ms. P pulled this meeting together as way to build bridges even before there are gaps! 😊

Thank you AmeriCorps students Ester, Fatema, Alina, Kim, Michael, Jess, Christina, Mercy, Tosin and all those who helped engage you in the RWC world this summer, particularly Professors Vera and Ali.

It was wonderful to work with you all on so many practical as well as pedagogical aspects of the RWC’s mission.

You touched and were touched by a lot of lives in the community. We all appreciate you connecting your own neighborhood building efforts with ours! 😊

Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to get COVID vaccines from the County Health Dept and CDPHP at the RWC over the past few months. All told, 74 1st doses were given and 31 2nd doses!

Special thanks to everyone who helped provided translation help when it was needed.

The vaccination offerings will continue nearby at Swinburne Park. Please encourage people you know to get vaccinated if they have yet to do so. We are not out of the woods yet with this pandemic.

“Traveller, the path is your tracks
And nothing more.
Traveller, there is no path
The path is made by walking.
By walking you make a path
And turning, you look back
At a way you will never tread again
Traveller, there is no road
Only wakes in the sea.”

Antonio Machado.

The Refugee Welcome Center

The Refugee Welcome Center was established to help with the resettlement efforts of refugee families and immigrant groups in the City of Albany's West Hill Neighborhood.

Our focus involves helping to connect refugees from a variety of different countries—such as, Afghanistan, Sudan, Myanmar, and Syria, to name a few—with support services and safe housing, as they work to adapt culturally and personally to our community. We are always looking for volunteers, donations, and friends who want to be involved with this effort. Join our team! Visit www.rwcwesthill.com for more information.
