When it comes to designing with sustainability in mind, our artisan partners are leading the way. ⁣

Women weavers in Bangladesh combine locally sourced, renewable materials like kaisa grass with recycled sari textiles to make the most vibrant baskets you'll ever see. ⁣

And the best part? Due to the recycled nature of the sari fabric, each piece is as unique as the woman who made it. #LiveLifeFair

Azo dyes, formaldehyde, and other hazardous chemicals? 🚫 They're not welcome here!⁣

Eco–leather is crafted without using the harmful substances found in the typical tanning process. Instead, eco–leather is tanned using materials derived from sustainable tea bark extracts and waxes. This “vegetable tanning” was used in India in ancient times to tan leather, and we are proud to work with fair trade artisans who simultaneously honor traditional crafts, safe practices, and beautiful fashion design.⁣

For 75 years, we've been ensuring fair wages and safe workplaces for our artisan partners. ⁣

Why? Because we know that earning a sustainable living is just the first step toward breaking the generational cycle of poverty. When an artisan has access to fair, steady employment in a safe and healthy environment, they can put food on the table, send their children to school, save for their own future and invest in their local community. That's why we #LiveLifeFair. Join the Maker-to-Market Movement. ⁣

Traditionally, the lotus is a symbol of regeneration, rebirth, and wisdom for many cultures. ✨ ⁣

Our artisan partners often incorporate the lotus into their designs, like the Lovely Lotus Incense Holder. It's a reminder that just like a lotus flower that grows a beautiful bloom from the muddiest waters, we too can rise above life's trials. #LiveLifeFair⁣

Work as a silver jeweler is the primary way Mrs. Karyawati supports her family and is able to provide an income for the other skilled artisans in her workshop. ⁣

Not only does it provide access to fair and sustainable income, but jewelry design brings her joy. She recently shared with us that her happiest feeling is when one of her product samples is selected to become a new order. ⁣

Every fair trade purchase and donation impacts the lives of global artisans. Thank you for choosing to #LiveLifeFair. ⁣

Weaving baskets is an art form that is passed down through the generations in Uganda. Like their mothers and grandmothers before them, the women who work with our fair trade partners at Uganda Crafts weave at home while caring for their families.⁣

Betty Kinene, a single mother with a disability and no access to fair and sustainable income, founded Uganda Crafts to connect herself and other local single mothers and widows with disabilities to employment opportunities. Since 1983, she's been leading the organization which has since blossomed into local retail shops and a robust ethical export business. We have been honored to partner with these amazing women since 1995.⁣

Did you know that we agree on a price with our artisan partners and pay 50% upfront before they even start work... and then pay the rest before the product leaves the port? ⁣

Why is this so important? ✨ Because when artisans are paid in full before products are transported, we take on all the financial risk that our global economy presents. If markets or trends change, supply chains are disrupted, or products are lost or damaged in transit, our artisan partners won't have to suffer the loss of get into exploitative debt. ⁣

When fair trade provides a financial safety net, artisans and their communities can break the cycle of poverty. #LiveLifeFair⁣

The past year has been challenging for us all, but especially for the women who hold our world up and our families together. Mother’s Day is a time to honor the moms, mother figures, and mentors who are shaping the future by raising the next generation of world changers. They give us shelter and strength, teach grace and goodness, encourage big dreams, and remind us that each day is an opportunity to grow a bit wiser, stronger, and kinder.

To the one who always rises to the challenge... THANK YOU!

Happy Mother's Day! #LiveLifeFair

The global fair trade movement was founded on the bold belief that when marginalized populations have access to fair wages, safe work, and a place to sell their goods, they thrive. They can avoid exploitation, put food on the table, provide education for their children, save for the future, and enrich their communities. ⁣

And perhaps most critically, when artisans have a financial foundation and a safety net of reliable income, they and their families can better withstand crises like the global COVID-19 pandemic.⁣

Throughout the past year, we've been in close communication with all our fair trade partners to gain a clear understanding of the health and safety of artisans and their communities. This has held true as India has seen a spike in cases in recent weeks. Our partners have shared that they are doing everything possible to keep artisans safe by distributing PPE kits as they become available, asking artisans and employees to work from home when possible, temporarily closing workshops and schools, and limiting unnecessary travel. ⁣

While PPE and oxygen supplies are scarce and not within our means to provide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to long-term relationships with our artisan partners and will monitor the situation to identify ways we can help. We will continue to provide access to sustainable income as safely as possible. ⁣

For 75 years, we have been honored to work alongside our fair trade partners to ignite social change and break the cycle of poverty. We have shared victories and tragedies, celebrated together and weathered storms of all types. Through it all we have held the common belief that when we work together, we can do great things. ⁣

So, how do we know fair trade works? Because we've had the privilege of watching children grow up healthy and strong, communities build clinics and schools, and workshops expand to invest in the livelihoods of more artisans. ⁣

Thank you for being part of the Maker-to-Market Movement.⁣

Our artisan partners focus on the use of locally sourced, recycled and creatively implemented materials in the products they design. 🌿 ⁣

Take our friends at KICK Trading in Kenya, for example. Judith (pictured on the right, with her family) is one of the artisans that transforms an invasive plant species into inventive new designs. Water Hyacinth, a menace that clogs natural waterways and removes oxygen from lakes and ponds, is collected and used to make paper and greeting cards. In a region where fishing is an important industry, and deforestation is an environmental threat, turning an invasive pest into a profitable product is an innovative solution. ⁣

Fair trade puts people and planet first. This is why we #LiveLifeFair.⁣

Never knew this store existed. I stopped in last week--what a great surprise. Very unusual things.....I be sure to be back and get some gifts.
Bought marble chess set for my brother's 60th birthday. Present from siblings. The first time he opened it one knight was broken. Returned to shop they immediately and graciously exchanged the knights for 2 to replace and complete set. Thank you so much! I love shopping here and what fantastic customer service!!
