An update on the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine.

We’re starting to offer the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine again at VA health facilities. We’ll provide this vaccine—along with the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines—to Veterans, spouses, caregivers, and CHAMPVA recipients who are at least 18 years old. Supply varies by facility.
How we made this decision

We continue to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

When a very small number of people who received the Janssen vaccine experienced rare but serious blood clots, CDC and FDA experts recommended a pause in providing this vaccine. They did this to give them time to study the issue. They then carefully reviewed these cases and all available data. Based on this review, they’re confident that this vaccine is safe for use and works well to prevent COVID-19.

The available data shows:

The vaccine’s benefits outweigh its risks
The chance of blood clots after getting this vaccine is very low

What this means for you

If you haven’t yet received a COVID-19 vaccine from VA, your local facility will contact you when they have one for you. If we offer you the Janssen vaccine, we’ll give you information about the potential risks and benefits. This includes the rare risk of blood clots. We’ll also tell you about your other vaccine options.

The primary goal of COVID-19 vaccines is to protect those we serve from COVID-19. And your safety—and the safety of all who receive a COVID-19 vaccine from VA—remains our priority.

Remember: VA text messages will always come from 53079. Emails will always come from a email address.
What you can do next

To learn about your VA health facility’s current plan, go to the facility’s website. Once you’re on the site, go to Health care services, then COVID-19 in the menu.
Find your nearest VA health facility that offers COVID-19 vaccines

If you have questions about this vaccine, contact your primary health care provider. If you get care through VA, you can send a secure message to your VA provider.

The UAlbany Veteran Student Association have endorsed Mr. Mark Anthony Quinn and Mr. Patrick Carrol for Student Association President and Vice President (respectively). If you are a current UAlbany student it would be a huge help if you could log into your MyUalbany and cast a vote in favor of these men. There have been multiple issues regarding funding from the Student Association and it is our belief that they are the ones to fix said problems.

Student Veterans Questionnaire Spring 2016

Attention Student Veterans!

Does your military experience help you get good grades? Do you feel like your military background is valued on campus? We are conducting a research study to find out what helps student veterans perform their best at school and what can get in the way. This study is being led by Dr. Lisa McAndrew, a psychology professor at the University at Albany, SUNY. The survey should take about 30 minutes to fill out. To thank you for your time, you can enter a drawing to win an iPad Mini (we will award one at the end of each collection period, at the beginning and end of each semester). To participate, you must be 18 or older and a student veteran.

To complete the survey, please put this URL in your internet browser:

On April 28th from 1-5 pm, the UAlbany Veterans group will be pairing up with the University Police Department and the NY State Troopers to hold a screening of the empowering film, Project 22. A film about two veterans that traveled on motorcycle around the country to talk to veterans of war and ultimately raise awareness for the 22 veterans that kill themselves each day. This is a movie that is already touching so many lives and we hope that it can inspire and motivate others to work hard and fight for the veterans that have fought overseas for us. It starts with awareness, it starts with YOU! We welcome you to come and enjoy this film in the company of many veteran friendly organizations, as well as, students, faculty, staff and veterans themselves. Thank you.

Here is an early heads-up for the Veteran's Day Ceremony to be held at the flag in Collin's Circle on Friday, Nov. 7th; time to be announced. We want to try and get as many vets out as possible this year. The University is making strides to improve veteran quality of life in a big way, but the only way that can be justified is if vets step up and show support. More numbers = more services.

Coming Soon

Don't forget to submit your application for the Michael Glover and Golf Classic scholarships offered by S.A.V.E.! Just send a letter outlining why you deserve the scholarship (include which one you are applying for) to [email protected] and someone will be in touch. Good Luck!

VA and Department of Labor release high demand occupation list for the Veteran Rapid Retraining Assistance Program Dear Student, The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is preparing to launch the Veteran Rapid Retraining Assistance Program (VRRAP) as part of its continued effort to support Veterans seeking retraining and economic opportunities in response to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. VA in partnership with the Department of Labor published a list of high-demand occupations. The list is available here and includes healthcare, education, media, engineering, and high tech opportunities. Covered education programs must provide training for a high-demand occupation. GI Bill approved programs of education, excluding bachelor’s and graduate degrees, and VET TEC approved training programs are eligible. Effective April 4, VA will begin working with education institutions to identify eligible training programs and complete VRRAP participation agreements. VA will publish a comprehensive list of approved VRRAP educational institutions and programs on its website to ensure that Veterans know what training opportunities are available under the program. VA has 17,250 training spots open for eligible Veterans and will soon announce additional details on how Veterans can apply to participate in VRRAP.
