Spring is here-- volunteer! We need your help. Did you know that nearly 70% of fire departments in NY are staffed by volunteers, including ours? Please share to help us spread the word!

There are so many ways our volunteers give back to their community, from emergency medical service providers to scene support and rehab, to interior Firefighting. And the beauty of the volunteer fire service is the diversity of people in it: from white collar office workers to career first responders, and everyone in between. If you've ever thought about becoming a firefighter, we would love to meet you. Send us a DM or call the number on our sign.

On January 4th, 2008 the North Bethlehem Fire Department responded to a structure fire on West Mckown Road shortly after 4:30am. First arriving crews found a multiple unit apartment building heavily involved in fire. The -2 degree temperatures and recent snowfall made the firefighting effort difficult. Please take some time this weekend and make sure the fire hydrants near your home are clear of snow. When fire hydrants are covered in snow it causes severe delays in getting the water we need to quickly and effectively fight a fire.

A nice shout-out to our friends at McKownville Fire Department in this video from University at Albany, SUNY.

Students living near SUNY Albany and The College of Saint Rose also fulfill the residency requirement for our department. If the idea of giving back to your community strikes a chord like it did for Firefighter Rizzuto, send us a message!

When he's not on the court or in the classroom, sophomore Antonio Rizzuto is volunteering with the McKownville Fire Department!

SCBA confidence drills can be fun! For our last drill, members donned gear and air packs and played a friendly game of dodgeball until their "low air" alarm activated. Our firefighters worked on controlling their breathing and conserving air while exerting themselves. Are you looking for rewarding, physically demanding community service? We could use volunteers like you! Stop by our drills on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm.

Last evening we were invited by the Guilderland Center Fire Department to practice vehicle extrication. Members from both departments practiced how to stabilize a vehicle, prepare it for extrication and removed the doors and roof. We want to thank Guilderland Center Fire Department for the invite and our members coming out for another successful night of training.

We would like to thank the Knox Volunteer Fire Company for inviting us to show their members our fireground rehabilitation unit last night. We started this program back in the early 2000's with a pop up canopy, 2 coolers and a few chairs. Today we respond to an average of 20 incidents annually to provide hydration and medical monitoring for first responders operating at a variety of incident types. We take pride in what we do and couldn't do it without the support of our community and fellow first responders.
