March is Women's History Month which is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. One of those women is Albany's own Mary Francis Coley, one of the legendary midwives of the South, who provided obstetric care to hundreds of black women who were banned from hospital care due to segregation. Learn more about her and the historical and groundbreaking 1953 documentary film, All My Babies, that told her story in a new exhibit here at Thronateeska's history museum. Thronatateeska is open Thursday-Saturday from 10 am-4 pm. There is no charge for admission. Visitors should check in at the Science Museum before visiting the All My Babies exhibit, which is housed in the historic train depot.

February Science Saturday: All Heart

We have so much fun at Science Saturday! This is what our participants made this past weekend. This cute-as-a-button model of the heart uses buttons to show how blood flows throught the heart. The black on red button shows blood with depleted oxygen coming from the body. The white on red button shows oxygenated blood coming from the lungs. Science Saturday is always the fourth Saturday of the month. Join us for more fun March 27!

This is the first image NASA's Perseverance rover sent back after touching down on Mars yesterday afternoon after a journey of 293 million miles, hurtling toward a nail-biting seven-minute descent to touchdown.. The view, from one of Perseverance's Hazard Cameras, is partially obscured by a dust cover. What do you think we will find on Mars?

On September 23, 1858, The Albany Patriot noted the beginning of a covered lattice, trestle bridge crossing the Flint River: “Horace King, the celebrated bridge builder, will superintend the work.” Upon entry to Albany, guests were welcomed at the Bridge House; the House held Col. Tift’s office, a theater, and social gatherings for the citizens of Albany. Although the Flint River Bridge was destroyed in 1897 during a flood, the Bridge House is still used today as the Albany Welcome Center. The Horace King Overlook at RiverFront Park was dedicated in 2004.

Who was able to see this tonight?

The Christmas Star 2020. The first picture is a long exposure of Jupiter and Saturn together on December 21st 2020 at their closest point, taken from Central Georgia USA. I did a long exposure to allow the light to soak into the barrel of the telescope and bounce off its internal mirrors and hardware to create this beautiful effect. The 2nd picture is what it looked like from the telescope eyepiece, rings of Saturn and Jupiter’s moons in full view. Merry Christmas.

Thank you everyone who has asked about getting a printed copy of the Christmas Star 2020 image. I do not have a store front or website to handle all these requests, so I am uploading the high resolution image for you to download and print on your own. It is my Christmas gift to all of you. If you do want to contribute to my work, you are welcome to make a paypal or Venmo contribution to me at

12/21/2020

The winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, when the sun appears at its most southerly position, directly overhead at the faraway Tropic of Capricorn.
The situation is the reverse in the Southern Hemisphere. There, the December solstice marks the longest day of the year -- and the beginning of summer in places such as Argentina, Australia and South Africa.

What is this lamp called? It has fingers of electricity that run through it, and come to your finger when you touch it. I want to purchase another one, but don't know the name. Thanks
Had fun showing the kids all the different things albany has to offer. Thank you letting us be part.
I wish there was more stuff for 3 year olds to do as well! My kid's age range for the older ones is 3-10 and there's nothing they can all do together. :(
Do I need to bring glasses to party or will try be available that day?
We had a great time at the Science Museum today learning about the upcoming eclipse and forced perspective.
Thanks to Phyllis Broome and all the good people at the Thronateeska Heritage Center in Albany, Georgia. For years the center has done a great job of preserving and explaining the history of Albany and South Georgia. And they have supported my writing over the years. https://www.amazon.com/Under-Blood-Maynard-Sinclair-Novel-ebook/dp/B071CYRFD1/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1499429062&sr=8-2
