4th Family

4th Family IT TAKES A COMMUNITY
The purpose for which this corporation was formed is to engage and mentor the youth in the community, and mold them into successful individuals. The corporation will provide educational and social opportunities, and through the use of programs, conferences, and annual events, we will aid these young people in accomplishing their dreams. We plan to implement various events and programs that we have listed in our business strategy, mentioned in the “Planned Event” section, as we secure proper funding. We plan to use funding to host the programs and events. Depending on the specific event or program, we plan to receive revenue. The revenue will be an addition to fundraising, private and government funding, which will be allocated to administration expenses and the expansion/development of our event and program catalog. All “profits” will be reinvested in to a campaign fund which will be used for the construction of our community center. The community center will be the pentacle of our mission and purpose. All our programs and events 4th Family will host will be fully implemented and housed at FFCC upon completion of the construction.

We love our community partners! Fourth and fifth graders in the 4th Family morning mentoring program at Giffen Elementary ate breakfast together Tuesday before diving into their work of the day.

4th Family is at Giffen five mornings a week. Each morning after breakfast, mentors help prepare students for the school day. Every day features a new lesson on character building, and there’s often a guest speaker.

The Giffen students will join Schuyler Achievement Academy’s 4th Family students to take part in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade and other festivities Monday at the Empire State Plaza.

ANNOUNCEMENT: In the culmination of the first year of the Corner Canvas program, three "moveable" murals will be installed on vacant properties provided by the Albany County Land Bank Corporation. Each mural was created by participating neighborhood students, mentored by artist Eugene O’Neill, to combine positivity and their creative expression. One of the young artists, Darielys, Grade: 8 Age: 14, shares her insight, “I believe that this program will add to better our community and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

This FRIDAY, May 10 the murals will be installed to their locations. The very next day, May 11, the young artists will add final touches to the pieces. For more information on locations and to see photos from the program visit: http://albanycentergallery.org/events/corner-canvas

Big things happening at 4th Family!

Every year, the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference Research Paper Competition brings exciting and innovative insight and changes to how we analyze sports. This year, an interdisciplinary team from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute comprised of graduate students from the School of Engineering and the School of Science, along with a professor from the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, scored a slam dunk by winning the $10,000 first-place prize at the competition. The team was recognized for the Best Paper Presentation titled, From Sports to Science: Using Basketball Analytics to Broaden the Appeal of Math and Science Among Youth.

The Rensselaer team led by John Drazan, a Ph.D student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, includes Ben Horne, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science; Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. student Amy Loya; and Ron Eglash, professor in the Department of Science and Technology Studies. In the winning paper, the team used a software application created by Horne that would allow students to create their own heat maps, which are graphical representations of data. The work was done in collaboration with 4th Family Inc., an Albany-based grassroots nonprofit. The team won $10,000 and a trip to Las Vegas to present the work to the National Basketball Association (NBA) during the NBA Summer League.

General information

Society has many issues that need to be rectified in order for the world to see substantial change. The three issues that we are pinpointing pertain to: the lack of concern with youth development in urban communities, the need for drastic improvements in our public school system and accountability within our communities from all groups and members. A primary concern in our urban communities relates to the household structures (or the lack there of) that the youth are exposed to. Many are also subjected to seeing major crime, gang and drug activity in their neighborhoods, at a young and impressionable age. With these uncontrollable living situations, it is extremely difficult to save all of the youth from personal destruction without the specific developmental arenas, activities, and venues to deter them from the pitfalls of their ecological ills. Collaborating with the board of education in hopes of assisting the public school system, is a focal point of ours and is also vital to the survival of our urban communities and families. The current public school system nationally is under-funded, under-staffed, and if in operation, there is a limited array of after school activities that encourage students to join or be involved in productive activities. We feel we have comprised a compilation of various innovative programs and events that will re-capture the interest of the inner-city. The way that we plan to combat the mediocrity that exists in our communities is to first change the mindset of people. Our programs and events will help us to build a strong rapport with members of the community. Another essential piece of our agenda is assisting adults in achieving their desired personal and occupational endeavours. We have planned enrichment programs that will allow members of the community to find jobs in various areas of interest as well as personal development. We will work closely with corporations and different organizations with the intentions of creating job-shadowing opportunities for the individuals in our programs. We also plan to have wellness programs and events to assist with mental and physical health. It is our desire to be able to work with all the people in the community who are from various backgrounds and different age groups. By encompassing all of these different community outreach programs/events, we believe that our organization will have a major impact on the inner-city, and will ultimately bring a change in the mentality of the people in our society, that is long overdue.
