🗣We Need YOU!

In 3 minutes or less, you can help Flint River Fresh collect at least 100 more responses to the Dougherty Fresh Neighborhood Interest Survey by January 29th?

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we are determined to connect with our community and move forward with plans to help our neighborhoods have more access to healthy foods and better health opportunities.

We’ve received some great ideas and insight. But, several of our neighborhoods need spokespersons via the survey.

Your responses will be shared with decision-makers to identify the Dougherty County neighborhoods interested in having community gardens and Grow-It-Yourself workshops with experts.

Take 3 minutes or less to share your thoughts, represent your neighborhood, and submit the Dougherty Fresh Neighborhood Interest Survey.

Every one of us has a seed story. For some of us it is elementary school where we learned about germination by growing bean seeds in dixie cups. Many gardeners however have a much deeper, personal connection to seeds by growing and saving seeds that were shared with them by a parent, grandparent or close friend. To them that bean or okra is much more than a plant or ingredient in a delicious summer meal but a connection to the legacy of that plant.

Come celebrate National Seed Swap Day with us at the 5th Avenue Community Garden on Saturday, January 30th at 10am. Dougherty County Extension Service will offer a class on Seed Saving.

Bring your seeds for swapping.

Flint River Fresh is excited to announce our newest team member, Jordan Parker.

Jordan joined the team in October as the School Garden Coordinator as a part of the United State Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service Farm to School Grant. Flint River Fresh, in partnership with Dougherty County Schools Nutrition Program, will utilize the year-long planning grant to implement school gardens in Dougherty County that will provide hands-on experiential educational opportunities for youth by growing fruits and vegetables that will be served in their school cafeteria. Jordan will work directly with the school garden programs at Radium Springs Elementary, Robert H. Harvey, and Turner Elementary to provide garden support and youth educational opportunities as part of the Farm to School Program. Read our interview with Jordan below.

Raised Bed Gardening Basics

Raised Garden Beds is one of the essentials for our work to transform greenspaces into "FOOD SPACES." In the video, Fredando "Farmer Fredo" Jackson shares some of the advantages for using raised garden beds in community gardens, school gardens, and community farms. He talks about briefly about square foot gardening, soil amendments, and how we build the garden beds.

This is an introduction video to raised bed gardening. Raised Beds are…
just gardens build on top of the ground using soil that you bring in from somewhere else. They are usually framed around the edge to keep your new soil in and the grass out.

We began promoting raised bed gardening as a solution to growing in hard to work soil, and quickly learned that raised beds provided many more benefits!
• More control over soil type and condition
• Begin growing food with less labor
• Get started sooner because soil warms up faster
• Easy to attach trellis, cold frame, fencing, etc
• Reduced soil compaction (=less work!)
• Easy to use the square foot method, which is: Simple to learn, even for beginner gardeners and Increases production by maximizing every inch

Today we harvested eighty pounds (51 Bunches) of Collard Greens from the 5th Avenue Community Garden that was picked up by Feeding the Valley Albany today! This produce is being prepped and will be delivered tomorrow to the seniors via Solider for Christ Ministry!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who came on Wednesday and Saturday mornings to help us plant and keep the garden beds weed free! Your sacrifice made today's harvest possible!!!

Team Work...Makes dream become REALITY!!!

Thankful to have helping hands from Grace City Church working in the 5th Avenue Garden today.

With their help, we
- harvested Okra, Peppers, and Eggplants
- began installing butterfly and native plants garden
- planted turnips and mustard greens from seed
- weeded garden plots with broccoli, collards, and peppers

Because of their help with weeding two of our garden plots, we will be able to harvest fresh Collard Greens and distribute them to families in our community through Feed the Valley partner organization this Thanksgiving.

Volunteers help our Garden Grow!!! Thanks to PSMC Managers for coming out to lend a hand at the Healthy Sumter Community Garden at Brookdale Park in Americus today.

Phoebe Sumter managers volunteered this morning at the Healthy Sumter Community Garden at Brookdale Park. The team building exercise was part of their Leadership Development Institute (LDI), which occurs quarterly.

Led by Flint River Fresh’s Farmer Fredo and assistance by City of Americus’ Street Superintendent Keffery McCuller, Mayor Pro Tem Nelson Brown and Sumter County Commissioners Chairman Clay Jones, PSMC’s managers were able to complete a number of tasks. First, they spread compost in areas where their will be planting in the group, and they also filled up additional raised beds that were constructed earlier this morning. Strawberries and broccoli were planted, and they also connected irrigation that will help water the raised beds.

It was a very productive morning, and helps set the table for future work at the garden, which will include adding more compost for the raised beds and planting collard greens and other fruits and vegetables.

Volunteer opportunities are set for every Friday from 9 am to 3 pm and some Saturdays. If you would like to sign up, please e-mail us [email protected].
