Many children who experience poverty face significant challenges—in the form of poor health, academic obstacles, and lower earnings—for the rest of their lives. With the stakes so high, there should be no delay in tackling child poverty in every inch of our great state. Help us #EndChildPoverty today. https://scaany.org/donate/

National #ChildHealthDay is on the first Monday of every October where we show our support of children's health, families, and those that work hard to help them. At Schuyler Center, we know that health is not just the absence of disease, but overall physical, mental, social, emotional, and community well-being. Read more at scaany.org.

The International Day of Peace (or World Peace Day) celebrated annually on September 21 is devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. In 2021, as we heal from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are inspired to think about how to help everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, equitable, inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.

The pandemic is known for hitting the underprivileged and marginalized groups the hardest. Due to long-standing structural racism and inequity, New Yorkers of color and immigrants have borne the brunt of the pandemic, disproportionately falling gravely ill and succumbing to the virus, while also facing job loss, hunger, and housing instability in disproportionate numbers.

Now, more than ever, New York State must lead boldly, with a sense of shared responsibility, and raise, borrow, and shift resources to ensure our children receive the supports they need to thrive. Join us: https://scaany.org/donate/

September Is Kinship Care Month: Celebrating Families When Children Live with Kin

Kinship care, as it’s commonly called, refers to caregiver grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, adult siblings and even family friends. Nationally, more than 2.7 million children live with relatives. New York has more than 200,000 children living full time with kin.

The Schuyler Center promotes policies that advance or maintain effective, high-quality systems that serve at-risk families, prevent entry into the child welfare system, and improve child well-being for children who are in care. We advocate for accountability of public systems, including better data regarding child outcomes and expenditures of funds.

Children need safe, nurturing and permanent families. Read more about Schuyler Centers work in Child Welfare: https://scaany.org/policy-areas/child-welfare/

Thanks GTM Payroll Services Inc.!

A great pleasure to visit with Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy in downtown #Albany today to present our 30-year anniversary donation. Thanks to Helen Smith for accepting the donation from GTM's Nolan Richards. GTM is giving $30k to local nonprofit organizations in honor of our 30 years in business. Did you know that Louisa Lee Schuyler (great-granddaughter of #AlexanderHamilton) founded the SCAA in 1872?! That's nearly a century-and-a-half of advocacy on behalf of all New Yorkers especially those in need. Thank you. #GTM30 #CapitalRegion

On July 28, 2021, Alliance For Early Success announced five states chosen as recipients of Child Care NEXT grants, a major initiative to support in-state coalitions ready to mount long-term campaigns to achieve transformative change to their state’s child care systems. New York is one of those states and Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy is proud to be one of the lead organizations, along with our partners, Alliance for Quality Education of New York and The Children's Agenda.

I joined advocates, providers and my colleagues today calling for Governor Andrew Cuomo to #ExtendTheWaivers

In New York, 1500 childcare centers have closed & nationwide over 4 million people have left the workforce because of care issues. We must extend the emergency waivers until our childcare system is better stabilized. And to fully recover from this pandemic, we need to support our providers and ensure childcare is accessible and affordable for all New Yorkers.

Just as our founder Louisa Lee Schuyler, great granddaughter of Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, focused on the invaluable role of government policies in delivering tangible benefits to impoverished communities, our strategies today remain dedicated to this work. We look forward to sharing a robust program of upcoming forums, webinars, and celebratory events, including the recognition of the Schuyler Center’s role in establishing the first nursing school in the country. We hope you will celebrate with us.
