The Foundation is dedicated to the discovery of the true nature of humanity. We offer weekly discussion groups and the opportunity to learn meditation. Discussion material centers on the great teachings of the East and West and draws in particular from the tradition of Advaita (the philosophy of unity). The focus is on how these teachings can be made real and practical in our daily lives.

There were 200 people attending a seminar on mental health. At one point, the speaker told the group they were going to do an activity. He gave each attendee one balloon and told them to write their name on it. Then, the balloons were collected and moved into a very small room.
The participants were then asked to go into the other room and were given two minutes to find their balloon.

It was chaos. People were searching frantically for their balloon, pushing each other and running into one another while they grabbed a balloon, looked at it, and inevitably tossed it to the side.

At the end of the two minutes, no one had found the balloon that had their name on it.

Then, the speaker asked the participants to go back in the room and pick up one balloon at random, look at the name, and return it to its owner. Within minutes, everyone had been reunited with their original balloon.

“This is what it’s like when people are frantically searching for their own happiness in life. People push others aside to get the things that they want, that they believe will bring them happiness.

"Our happiness actually lies in helping other people and working together as a community."

A student from another branch of the world-wide School of Practical Philosophy speaks about how the class has impacted her life ❤️

We asked @suerobinson what she likes most about @schoolofpracticalphilosophy and what #practicalphilosophy lessons are having a positive impact in her daily life:

“What I like about the school is the variety of philosophy classes that available online. I really enjoy the structure of the classes where there is content being a story or past philosophers insights followed by a class discussion.”

“I have learned to be open and to think more deeply about myself and the way I live my life. This class has given me the permission to question what’s important to me and has given me the tools to be more present and to really connect with what’s in front of me either people, nature and most importantly myself.”

“What I use in my daily life is taking a breath and pausing before I engage in a new activity. I meditate each morning and make daily efforts to turn off the mental chatter.”

WHAT IS PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY?

It is not an academic survey of great philosophical ideas as one might find in a university. Rather it is an introduction to a series of proven principles that enable students to attain self-knowledge and better their lives through reasonable, compassionate living. The proof of Practical Philosophy’s effectiveness is found in personal experience.

The curriculum is inspired by the philosophy of Advaita (“not two”), and embraces a wide range of philosophical ideas, tapping into the wisdom of the great minds of East and West, including Plato, Socrates, Jesus, the Buddha, Shakespeare, Emerson, and Shri Shantananda Saraswati.

Much of the learning that students experience comes from their fellow students and their own innate wisdom. The tutors, who direct the classes, are ongoing students in the School who have been practicing Practical Philosophy for many years and generously offer their own insights.

"The past is never the same again. Stop worrying about it; keep cheerful, for cheerfulness is your real shape. The clothes you are wearing must wear out; the smoothness of your skin must go; wrinkles must appear on your face; your body must lapse into the coils of Time. Take all that in your stride, and play the part assigned to you."

New term of Practical Philosophy and Meditation begins January 18th at 7 PM via Zoom. The introductory course is 10 weeks long and is offered free of charge aside from a $10 administrative fee. Call 229-288-8577 or email [email protected] for information and registration.

Practical Philosophy - Exploration of mindful living, wisdom and happiness

IF
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!"

Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936

A Tribute to Mr Graham Moore 1941 – 2020 -

This gentleman had quite a bit to do with the fact that there is a School in Georgia. May he rest in peace while his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved and respected him.

Mr Graham Moore passed away October 5th. He was dearly loved by many people in the Philosophy School, and his wisdom, humour, warmth and presence will be sorely missed. Mr Moore took over the leadership of the Durban School Philosophy in 1992 after Mr Lawrence Stretton passed away. He was our school...

any religion, but to bring a more tangible spirituality to

What is it that you are looking for in life? Success? Peace? Happiness? Fulfillment? Purpose? Perhaps something else... Does it feel as though the goal post keeps moving? "Well if I just get this job, then I'll be happy..." and then, "If I just get this promotion, then I'll be happy..." or something along those lines. Perhaps you find yourself craving good company and meaningful conversation? Wanting to talk about things that carry a deeper significance, but that our all to often shallow world seems to not have time for?

Our Story

The Georgia Philosophy Foundation is dedicated to the discovery of the true nature of humanity and is a part of a world-wide network of Schools. We offer weekly discussion groups that lead to the opportunity to learn mantra meditation. Discussion material centers on the great teachings of the East and West and draws in particular from the tradition of Advaita (the philosophy of oneness or unity). The focus is on how these teachings can be made real and practical in our daily lives and how the practices can benefit not only ourselves, but the world in which we live as well.
