Creative Writing Competition for students in grades 4-6

**Attention Teachers!**
Fair Bear Creative Writing Competition Deadline Extended

This contest is open to Georgia writers in grades 4-6 from all accredited Georgia public and private schools. It provides an opportunity for students to express their creativity and win cash prizes for themselves and their schools. The top three finalists from each grade will also win tickets to the 2021 Georgia National Fair.
This year’s theme is “Fair Bear Launches into Space”. For more information and a full list of available prizes, visit https://www.georgianationalfair.com/p/georgialiving/fairbear and click on the 2021 link.

Awesome job! Congratulations Coach Tiffanie Young!

A volunteer for Special Olympics promises to give of their time in their life, so that Special Olympics athletes can have the time of their lives. They promise to support Special Olympics not just as an expression of charity, but as a form of respect for their fellow human beings.

Our 2nd Colquitt County Volunteer to be honored is Tiffanie Young.

Coach Young is a PE Teacher at CA Gray Junior High School and she has been teaching for 11.5 years. Coach Young also coaches 8th grade girl’s basketball. She is a Colquitt County Graduate who earned her undergraduate degree in Health and PE at Albany State University. Coach Young then earned her Masters degree in Health and PE from University of North Georgia as well as an Education Specialist degree from Jacksonville State University.

When asked what Coach Young is most proud of she states graduating college with a Masters degree and continuing her education with her Education Specialist and that she is positively influencing teenagers through her job, coaching and life.

Coach Young plays on a traveling softball team in her spare time as well as cooking, reading, fishing, playing any/all sports and working with kids.

Coach Young volunteered with the Special Olympics while at Albany State for 4 years and has helped in Colquitt County for 7 years. While in Colquitt County, Coach Young has coached C. A. Gray Special Olympics teams in both Winter and Spring Local Games. She is also the event director for Team Skills Basketball at CA Gray and has been for the last 3 years.

Her co-worker, Ashley Taylor, shares “Coach Young is a wonderful asset to the Special Olympics program at CA Gray and Colquitt County. In addition to helping with Special Olympics, Coach Young also teaches our students with special needs in PE. She is an exceptional teacher to our students. She is very patient and accommodating with each and every one of them and is always willing to go the extra mile for our students”.

Coach Young, you are a Packer Point of Pride and we thank you for all you do.

Old post! But this is still such an awesome idea for every school to do once Covid is gone, or maybe have a few in the gym at a time with a mask on of course! The kids would have a lot of fun and really learn a lot!

Yukon High School held their annual Reality Check this week! During the event, freshman students are assigned a random annual income before traveling to booths like housing, clothing, insurance, and child care to make virtual payments from their budget.

Although they must visit every booth, they are empowered to make their own personal decisions. One ninth grader reflected, “I got $35,000 which I thought was really good, but now I’m down to $20 and still have bills...I may have gone a little crazy with the nice truck.” Once they’ve paid their bills, the students who have money leftover receive a KitKat, while those with $0 left in their bank account receive a Zero bar.

“This is an opportunity for the students to gain a deeper understanding of how their parents live on a day-to-day basis. It really puts things in perspective and gives them some real world experience and therefore, a better idea of what to expect in the future” said YHS teacher, Darryl Andrews.

To provide real insight, every booth is hosted by local volunteers from their correlating industries, i.e., auto salesman sell the cars, bank officials run the bank, child care providers discuss child care. The real estate agents working in the housing booth reflected, “We actually learn a lot from the students too! After volunteering for several years at this event, we’ve gotten to see firsthand how the students’ decision-making processes have changed over the years.”

If you’re a local business and would like to be involved in opportunities like this, please contact our Community Education Office at 405.354.2579 or email [email protected].

Congratulations

CMCSS alum, Zavion Williams, uses his natural leadership abilities to encourage current students to reach their potential. While a student, Williams enjoyed a challenging academic and athletic career, which he is now using to guide 7th-grade students at West Creek Middle School. As a teacher resident and basketball coach, Williams leads students both on and off the court to think critically and strive for success. He uses these same guiding principles as a local business owner, operating the restaurant Fat Shack.

The skills and experience he learned while in school have propelled him in life. Now, Zavion Williams is successfully showing the next generation how to do the same.

Be a Voting Ambassador for BlockPower!

I was asked to post this announcement and flyer on my Youth page to get the word out about a paid nonpartisan effort to increase voter turnout for the Jan 5 Senate runoff election. Please see below!

BlockPower is looking for “voting ambassadors” who talk to their friends and family about the importance of voting, and earn money when those friends agree to remind three friends to vote. That’s called ‘vote tripling’ and for each vote tripler they sign up, they earn $25. Link to register: https://blockpower.in/F2020. We want folks who really care about having the voice of the Black community be heard. And asap, since the runoffs are so soon. Here’s a quick video on how it works: https://vimeo.com/486788747; find sample Social Media posts/graphics/flyers at https://www.blockpower.vote/resources/social. A printable flyer is also attached. You can also just forward this message!

Any other questions, feel free to reach out to me at 831-234-2989. Thank you so much!
Best,
