Today FOCUS Curches of Albany joins with the nation in celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

A cornerstone of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s fight against inequity, poverty is an issue that crosses race, gender, and cultural lines, affecting people across the nation. Not solely an issue in America, Dr. King recognized that poverty pervaded the globe. Often, when speaking publicly and in his writings, Dr. King sought unity from other countries, stressing the need for all of us to fight poverty together.

It is with great sadness that we share the following about Rev. Dr. Robert Lamar, a FOCUS champion and a true ecumenical activist. Bob will be deeply missed.

Rev. Dr. Robert Lamar, Instrumental in the Formation of FOCUS, Dies at age 96

The Rev. Dr. Robert (Bob) Lamar, HR has passed away at the age of 96. He served as a pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Albany for 35 years before retiring and was a member of Albany Presbytery for 60 years.

Locally, Bob served as a leader in both ecumenical and interfaith circles, and was instrumental in the formation of the FOCUS Churches. During the turbulent 1960’s he played a major role in spearheading church involvement in inner-city ministry including opening in*******al dialogue with many of the African American pastors and congregations, as well as ecumenical dialogue with the Roman Catholic community. In retirement Bob became the part-time Executive of the Capital Area Council of Churches and in that capacity continued to be a leading voice in all things ecumenical and interfaith. He served in many roles in Albany Presbytery, including moderator. Throughout his life in ministry, Bob was an excellent preacher and community activist and served as an officer and board member for many organizations.

He received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from both Tarkio College and Centre College, as well as a doctor of humane letters from Siena College.

Shutdown threatens area food banks, pantries

The Federal shut down has far reaching consequences right here in our own neighborhoods.

The region's food pantries could be "inundated" by people seeking assistance should the shutdown continue after SNAP funding expires next month, according to Mark Quandt, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.

WINS-day blog: As summer fades and fall leaps into existence here in the northeast, our direction in life shifts. We put away the BBQ grills, store away the lawn furniture and umbrellas, even change the type of flowers and shrubberies we plant. The supermarkets are harvesting different crops, department stores are cheaply pricing summer items, and all because there is a shift occurring, a new direction, a new season. New seasons bring changes and change is not always easy for some of us. But, today, I want you to open your mind and heart to whatever change is coming your way. One way to do this is to set personal goals for yourself, goals that enrich the purpose and meaning you find in life. Identify something you want to change in your life in this new season and be purposeful about attaining the goal. Don't let other people's lives and problems interfere with the direction you desire. Remember, we can each travel in different directions, but it is key to recognize that we all must arrive at the same destination -- doing together what we cannot do alone! So, on this WINS-day, run with patience and endurance to win the prize that is in Christ Jesus, for we only WIN when we don't compete, but seek to complete the race! It's not about how we run the race, it's about adjusting our direction to reach the destination because then ... we WIN!!! Blessings, Rev. Renee Hollinshed, Executive Director
