From another time. Being a member of the Safety Patrol use to mean a lot more than it is today. Free movie passes and the prized "Membership card" that you are paty of the "elite". An Officers card , among your peers, was the next best thing to a movie pass. Most movie theaters honored them for free admission rather than print another card. Some were awarded only to the Patrol Person of the month and only good for a month. Woolworth use to give a free fountain drink, some stores offered discounts for shoes or raingear, Free candy bars or ice cream. But then again we were allowed to stop traffic, escort small kids home, watch traffic when school trips were popular. Every class that walked to a trip or outing had 2-3 Patrol kids running ahead of the class and manning their posts as the class crossed the street, We stood in the middle of the road with our hands in back and just stood there blocking any cars from trying to use the roads. I guess now-a-days insurance liability even prevent kids from going outside the building much less standing on a corner and the practice of stopping traffic is considered to be urban legend. Most cities have turned it into adult crossing guards with pay and even unions.
