Meet the twins, Cissy and Tyler, aged 8 who use Family Support services with Easterseals.

Cissy is a sweetie who loves hugs and kisses! She has an Autism diagnosis and communicates non- verbally. She also loves the outdoors and can be a bit of a runner requiring extensive supervision by her family. She uses Family support funds for medical supplies, therapeutic services and respite care.

Tyler is kind hearted, compassionate and the comedian of the family. He has jokes and loves to make people laugh. Tyler also uses FS services for help with therapeutic activities, recreational opportunities, and respite care.

Cissy and Tyler use this little bit if help to enhance their lives. Without the Family Support program the family would struggle to access these supports and services. Life would be different for the twins without the help of Easterseals Family Support!

Please help us protect the Family Support program for families just like this!!

We have ONE MORE WEEK to fight for families like this!! ACT NOW!!!

My name is Rachael Peeples. Easterseals is amazing and provides so so much for my family.
It has given my daughter Haley Grace (who is about to receive her third brain surgery) the chance to receive much needed horse therapy and helps with monthly travel to Augusta, Georgia for medical appointments.
With out the Family Support program we would be lost. Their services help more then anyone would or could understand.

ONE MORE WEEK to fight for these families. ACT NOW!!!

Meet the R family. They are a unique family. All 3 members of their family utilize the Family Support program due to different medical needs. Mr. R needs help with medical supplies and travel expenses to far away specialist for his spina bifida treatment. Mrs. R uses FS for help with travel to her out of town specialist. Their child uses family support services for access to therapeutic care and medical supplies not covered by insurance.

This family is on a fixed income and without the assistance of Easterseals Family Support, Mr. R says they will struggle, miss out on therapy and medical care out of town. Without the receipt of medical supplies, Mrs. R says their child will have immediate health problems and the family has no way to pay for these supplies.

The support the R family receives from the Family Support program is invaluable. Please help keep Family Support services funded because families like the R family need this help!

Meet Shaniya. Shaniya is a loving 21-year-old who loves caring for others and connecting with people-she never meets a stranger. She is a typical high schooler who loves music and high school musicals. Shaniya also has intellectual and developmental disabilities that require special medical supplies and care.
Easterseals supports Shaniya by providing medical supplies, medical equipment, and resource connections. But to Shaniya and her family Easterseals is much more than that. “Easterseals is like family-we fit together like a glove. They are such a tremendous help-we honestly wouldn’t have made it this far without them.”

Please help Shaniya and families just like hers. Call your legislators today and help us protect the Family Support Program. So many families are counting on us!

"I live in Sumter County, Georgia with my beautiful, loving son. My son is a very special, happy growing 14-year-old teenager. There are a lot of extra special items and assistance he has needed and will continue to need throughout his life in order to continue to thrive. My whole life as a person and mother is devoted to his safety, health, and well-being. We have dealt with many challenges and the Easterseals Family Support program has always been a vital part of my son’s life. The people working at Easterseals do not just see our loved ones as just a number, but as an important part of society. My son and every other person with special needs teaches us how we should be-how to truly love one another. Easterseals has opened their hearts to each and every individual and they devote their life to being their advocates. I’m asking each of you on behalf of my son and every other special human being in the Family Support Program to VOTE NO. No on eliminating this vital program and help protect these truly deserving individuals. Eliminating this program would be devastating. Help make a difference in our special loved ones lives as they do in all of our lives by making our world a better place to live. Please open your hearts and do the right thing as our special people do every day of their life. Thank you for your time and all you do. "

Sincerely,
A concerned mother and advocate

This family was made with love fourteen years ago when they adopted their first medically fragile daughter, Keriyah. Four years later, they added a second medically fragile daughter to their family, Miracle. Both young ladies have medically fragility issues that require nursing level care during the day and parental care at night. This is a 24/7 job for their mother who has been battling an aggressive cancer.
The Easterseals Family Support program helps this family by providing respite care for their two daughters enabling this mother to recharge, reconnect and care for herself and her own medical needs. Family Support also helps supply medical supplies, trach care supplies, summer camp opportunities and reimbursement for mileage to out of area medical appointments for both of the girls. These services are vital to the health, happiness and financial sustainability of this family.

Please help Keriyah, Miracle and their family by calling your legislator today! HELP US PROTECT THIS PROGRAM!

Meet James. He shares his story of why the Family Support Program is so important!

My name is James Baumgardt. I am accredited minister and I live in South Georgia. I live at home and I am in a wheelchair with Cerebral Palsy. I have a lot of physical needs and even though I get SSI each month, it only goes so far. The Easterseals Family Support Program provides a lot of medical supplies for me that would be a big hardship without their help. Things like eyeglasses, incontinent supplies and even a wheelchair. They have actually bought a computer for me because I can’t write, and I was taking classes online. The computer also helps me with a lot of my ministry work. The Family Support Program has also helped pay for me to attend camps so that I can minister to others who also have disabilities.
If the state of Georgia cuts the Easterseals/Family Support Program it will leave me with a lot of expenses that I really cannot afford. I know I’m not alone, if this program is eliminated there will be a lot of other people that will struggle as well, maybe even worse than me. So I ask you please don’t cut Easterseals/Family Support Program. It is so vital to so many.

Meet Morgan, a 14 year old beauty with a personality larger than life. Morgan has been a part of the Easterseals family since she was 3 years old. In her own words, this is what the Easterseals Family Support Program means to her and her family.

"Family Support is essential. If we lose Family Support, the biggest concern for me is Megan’s House. I’ve been attending Megan’s House since I was three years old. Megan’s House is my home away from home. Without it, my mom wouldn’t have anyone to help me with my needs while she takes care of other things for herself and our family.
Through family support, I’ve been able to attend summer camps, and I’ve been able to do various activities. I’ve been blessed to meet different people who show kindness, all through Family Support!
Unfortunately, without Family Support, my family and other families-who have family members with special needs- won’t get what we need! Without Family Support, we wouldn’t be able to go on an afternoon outing or get supplies (like wipes and diapers) shipped to our doors. Without the additional financial help my family receives from Family Support, we won’t be able to do those joyous activities. Without family support, our lives wouldn’t be the same."

This mother shares the story of why the Family Support Program is so important to her family!

Good Morning to all. My name is Eboni T. The Family Support Program is an essential need for families who have children with disabilities. My son who is now 11, was born with Spina Bifida, Bilateral Club Feet, Heart Murmur (2 holes in his heart), and a small bladder (approximately size of a 3-year-old now).

The Easterseals program is a blessing for us because it bridges the gap for services, supplies, equipment, care, therapeutic programs that would not be financially possible. Everyone thinks that because you have insurance you are covered. But the truth is that health insurance doesn't cover everything and many times it doesn't cover the immediate needs of disabled children and adults.

My son had his first and second major surgeries within 6 months of each other in June 2016 (9-hour spinal surgery) and January 2017 (Club foot surgery). After my son's foot surgery in January 2017 my son would be in a wheelchair again until his foot healed. After that he would be able to use the medical riding scooter. As one knows these scooters are very expensive. They are also difficult to find for a child who is not the average size for his age (much smaller in height and weight). Easterseals stepped in and was able to find a company that would send us the scooter in advance and wait for a check to be mailed from the Easterseals office.

Easterseals has also helped us with the reimbursement of travel expenses as my son still has his Orthopedic and Neurological Specialists appointments at the Children's Health of Atlanta Hospital.

I ask that the government rethinks their budget cut in the Family Support Programs in the DBHDD. Easterseals is a great program and it is a program that truly has the heart, well-being, and care for the disabled children, adults, families, and caregivers in mind.

As a single mother of 3 beautiful children with severe food allergies, asthma, heart wall thickening, spina bifida, and bilateral clubfeet programs like Easterseals is ESSENTIAL!

Respectfully and Thank you,

Eboni T.

Another family shares their story of why the Family Support Program is so important!

Monty, aka "YiYi" is a 38 year old guy who loves old time country music and his cat, Bussie. He spends a lot of time at home with his mom, B, who is a recent widow. B provides 24 hour care to YiYi who was in an accident over twenty years ago and needs a wheelchair for mobility.
YiYi uses Easterseals Family Support services to help pay for eye care and dental care not provided under his adult insurance. He also receives specialized medical supplies needed for Monty's daily care needs. His mom explains that YiYi adult briefs and supplies are not sold on store shelves. Without the support of Easterseals, he would be without these essential needs.

Please help us protect these much needed services for the 6,000 plus families across the state of Georgia just like YiYi and his family.

"Hi, I am Brooke Olinger and my husband is Tam. We live in Leesburg Georgia and have been with the Easterseals Family Support Program for a few years now. We have a beautiful daughter Ellison who has special needs. She is 6 years old, in Kindergarten, and has the sweetest spirit and smile. We are blessed she is here, thriving. Ellison is our only child and our world.
Ellison was born 3 weeks early with Subgaleal and Cephalohematomas, (which led to her scalp scaring over with no hair growth on the top of her head), suffering a brain injury during birth. She was diagnosed in the NICU with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, then all the other diagnosis’s followed-Periventricular Leukomalacia, Microcephaly, Cortical Vision Impairment, Epilepsy, feeding difficulties (G-Tube), Cerebral Palsy, Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome & Severe Developmental Delay. She is wheelchair bound, nonverbal, and has different medical equipment, leg braces, hand splints, suction machine, etc. that are used for her daily care. She had her first seizure at 3 days old. With various medication changes and trials, she has gone from 75-80 seizures a day to 20-25 with the help of Cannabis Oil, as her seizures come from all over the brain. She has quite a few daily medicines and is fully dependent on us for everything. I had no idea when going into labor all of this would happen, I thought I was going to be bringing home a perfectly healthy baby girl. Our world was turned upside down, all the wait and see how she will develop etc. As hard as it was and is, we are so very lucky she is with us, happy and content in her own world. Having a child with special needs is hard, I am not a complainer, but it can be exhausting and an emotional rollercoaster, sometimes heartbreaking as you grieve for the normal life your child does not have. All our little girl knows is love, so I believe that makes for a pretty amazing life.
Ellison does Physical, Speech, and Vision Therapy through school. She has her own nurse who goes to school with her. She also does play therapy at Lekotek once a month and is part of the weekly Superheroes class (vision & music therapy) at Ms. Gussies Place in Atlanta. All of her specialty doctors are in Atlanta, so we are on the road a lot, but are very happy with our care team for her. Here at home she is a member of The Challenger League, an organization that gives special needs children a chance to play sports on teams along with other activities throughout the year. She keeps us very busy between therapies and doctors appointments! We like to keep her busy as well with activities, she loves hearing other kids voices, and it’s good for others to be familiar with kids that have special needs.
That's where the Family Support Program has been a huge help, by providing us with assistance with all the expenses it takes to travel, continue with therapy, and extracurricular activities. It takes a lot of money to raise a special needs child, some meds we pay for out of pocket, since not covered by insurance, also equipment such as different seating options other than a wheelchair, head supports, and switch toys are not covered. We would not be able to provide certain things our daughter needs to thrive if it was not for the generosity of the Family Support Program. Our children deserve the world and a chance just like any other child. We are so very lucky to have come across such a wonderful organization who genuinely cares about our little girl!! The support and financial assistance gives us some relief, allowing us to focus on what our daughter needs. It takes a village and we have been given so many wonderful resources. We would be devastated if this program was no longer an option for us, it is such a big help. We appreciate everything Easterseals has done for us, the program allows for us breathe a little and continue to help our daughter live a long happy life being who she is....special! Thank you for taking the time to read our story and we pray this program can continue helping families like ours! "

Sincerely, Brooke Olinger
