The Free School

The Free School “Once you have learned how to ask questions – relevant and appropriate and substantial questions – you have learned how to learn and no one can keep you from learning whatever you want or need to know.”-Neil Postman
The Free School in Albany, New York is the longest running inner-city independent alternative school in the United States. We offer a unique alternative to traditional models of education by giving children complete freedom over their learning. Students at the school, many whom have slipped through the cracks of today’s increasingly regimented school system, flourish in a nurturing environment that allows them the freedom to chart their own course of learning while fostering their emotional growth.

The Free School board and faculty are developing multiple platforms for learning in the upcoming school year. These options include, in-person, online and hybrid learning tracks. Our priority is protecting health and safety of our students and faculty while staying true to our core values; providing voice and choice to our learners and their families. The School Board will send out surveys over the next week to gather information that will help to inform our plans for the fall. We still have a lot work to do to finalize reopening plans and we appreciate your patience during this process.

Some listening for today.

In a Fourth of July holiday special, we hear the words of Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery around 1818, Douglass became a key leader of the abolitionist movement. On July 5, 1852, in Rochester, New York, he gave one of his most famous speeches, “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.” He...

We did it! We graduated our learners to their next steps on their learning journey! This has been a wild ride these last few months. What we told our learners was that we are so happy you are our future. This world you have been given needs so much work and strength to make it better for all people. Your knowledge and empathy and measure of justice will be imperative as you continue to grow and learn and then lead us. #blacklivesmatter #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #sayhername #saytheirnames and please #wearthatmask

Can you spare a minute to help deirdre kelly?

Tear gas canisters were thrown at protesters in a residential neighborhood. This neighborhood is one of the more economicallly struggling and diverse areas of Albany. Families in their homes asleep were met with clouds of tear gas that made many feeling the effects into the next day. This is a chemical that the military has banned the use of in war. Please sign this petition.

305 signatures are still needed! Ban military style force by police in Albany

What is happening now is not new but it seems to be reaching a tipping point. BLACK LIVES MATTER. Full stop.

We are outraged and heartbroken by the violence, death and murder that is met by black and brown people at the hands of the state and individual citizens of this country. Silence will not protect us and silence equals the support of the violent and corrupt systems that are consistently murdering black and brown people.
Some people will say that politics doesn’t belong in school. Some people will say this should not be a platform for these types of things. We respectfully disagree with both of those sentiments. We are all living in the same world and seeing the same things. It is imperative that we acknowledge that our experiences differ immensely because of our race.
Young people in schools and of school age are as much a part of our society as adults. They are deeply affected by the world around them and the violence and injustice they see and experience.
At The Free School we engage and encourage our learners to think critically of the world we are in. We explore our roles and responsibilities for how to support eachother and those who need and deserve support and care. This has taken many forms. This has been holding space to discuss current event topics that can be difficult and painful but so critical to face head on for the development of empathy and growth. This has been classes that highlight historically underrepresented people and events in history. This has been participating in protests and rallies supporting causes and people local or worldwide.
Learners at The Free School over the years have demanded to be a part of many actions and events because at the end of the day youth have an incredibly intact compass for /injustice and fairness. At The Free School we hold space for them to speak their truth to power. We are so proud to see so many of our former and current learners participating in the current fight against police brutality, state violence, racism and white supremacy.

Below are photos from over the years fighting for justice and experiencing joy.

Root3d

What an amazing organization and forward thinking model!

Hi Root3d Loves,

With shifts going on all around us, we have decided to be 100% donation based! During these times, we want to be sure our community has access to healing and resources. Root3d was built by us and for us.

You are all so sacred and special to us. We want to continue to provide classes, conversations, and workshops that you need. Your likes, comments, shares, attendance on FB and IG Live, attendance on Zoom, and cash app donations are all powerful energy exchanges that we appreciate from you. It is because of you that Root3d has a strong foundation. We will continue to grow and evolve with you.

We want to exemplify what community is. We will continue to hear and see our community. With this new energy exchange model, we can remove barriers for those who attend any offerings and allow you to choose what feels right to send- whether a dollar amount, a like, or a smile. Plus, it allows creative partnerships with businesses that align with our values to support different workshops.

Thank you, thank you, thank you

The Bucket Garden program at the Albany Free School helps South End residents grow produce in their backyards. The prefilled buckets will be given away on Monday, May 25th, from 3-6pm at Gabi’s Garden (corner of Grand St. and Wilbur St.) along with the Stop the Shooting BBQ.

The Bucket Garden program is usually part of South End Earth Day, which was cancelled due to COVID-19. Lex Bhagat, program organizer and The Free School board member, has ensured that the program will still donate prefilled buckets this year so neighbors can avoid growing food in lead contaminated soils.

Mini jewelry sale tomorrow and Wednesday after school!! Perfect for last minute holiday gifts!!! Money supports 4th & 5th graders annual end of the year class trip.
Deb Cavanaugh is battling a tick-borne disease, dizzy (and falling), with a fever. Deb has taught so many of our families how to be musical with our children, and generously enriched our communities for so many years. Here's our chance to give back. She lives fairly far outside of Albany, so we are collecting frozen meals for her at our home in Delmar and will deliver them to her once or twice a week. We can pick up your meals for her too. Send me a PM to schedule (or to get my phone number if that's easier). She needs a low-carb, no-sugar, low-fiber diet, and doesn't do red meat, so look at the links in comments for ideas. That means no whole grains or nuts or seeds; vegetables need to be well-cooked; and go heavy on the protein and dairy but skip the starches.
