The Free School

The Free School “Once you have learned how to ask questions – relevant and appropriate and substantial questions – you have learned how to learn and no one can keep you from learning whatever you want or need to know.”-Neil Postman

The Free School in Albany, New York is the longest running inner-city independent alternative school in the United States. We offer a unique alternative to traditional models of education by giving children complete freedom over their learning. Students at the school, many whom have slipped through the cracks of today’s increasingly regimented school system, flourish in a nurturing environment that allows them the freedom to chart their own course of learning while fostering their emotional growth.

Let's get these learners a legit filmmaking setup!

We are launching a small fundrasing campaign with the goal of purchasing a starter kit for burgeoning filmakers at The Free School.

Check out the intro to a movie Free School learners are making! They are currently using an iphone and free editing apps/software. The problem solving and creative skills they are showing through this process are impressive! While they are both being very productive with the tools at hand we want to support them by providing access to much better tools!

Meet the filmmakers:

Hello, I am Gregory and I attend The Free School. I am currently in 8th grade. As far back as I can remember I’ve always loved filmmaking. I find working behind the scenes very interesting. When I was 10, I remember looking up how things happen behind the scenes in movies. A couple of filmmakers, who inspire me are Wes Craven, who produced lots horror movies like Nightmare On Elm St, Scream, and The Hills Have Eyes, and George A. Romero who made Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead and many more films.
I’ve been interested in cinematography and writing for a long time. I’ve always had a very creative vision and really great ideas. My goal this year while attending The Free School is to take advantage the freedom here and create one or two short films to start work on my dream career. Right now we’re currently using our phones and it is fun. If we had a camera it would allow greater creativity, flexibility, troubleshooting, more storage, and better video and sound quality.

Hi, I'm Roscoe. Making films is fun and it is something I can work on outside of school. We even worked on the script over winter break by sharing a google doc. In general its super fun. My favorite types of movies are slasher horror, and action. I really, really like Jordon Peele who made Get Out and Us. Us was creepy as hell and I really liked the multiple story line. I like most horror movies and am not really scared by them. My brother, Madison, did filmmaking at The Free School when he was a kid and then made one with his best friend as a grownup. Him doing it made me think I can too.

We did some experiments this week with yeast, sugar, and water, learning about fermentation. Watched a balloon we'd stuck on top of an Erlenmyer flask fill up with "fungus burps" (CO2.) Finally we baked the tastiest bread, and even churned our own butter!

Do you want to learn graphic design and make your design into something tangible? While doing your part to fight COVID-19? Join Library Assistant Christolin Michel and local creative business Yamaguchie as we work together in a personalized one-hour digital art class throughout the week of January 25th. Participants will learn the fundamentals of graphic design, and get assistance in turning a chosen image into a printable design. This will then be custom printed on a protective face mask by Yamaguchie, so you will be able to wear your artwork with pride.

All levels of experience and ages are welcome, and families are also encouraged to join and work together with Christolin on their creations.

NOTE: After registering, you will receive an email asking for the best day/time for your one hour time slot.

Then, on January 29th we will be holding an end of program celebration where you will be able to share you designs and experiences with the other participants.

Rashid is a graduate that has continued to support us in so many ways. He recently lost his dad. Please support! This is a humble campaign that is trying to cover medical bills and funeral costs. It would be great to surpass this ask and give more to support this family as they grieve and take care of each other. Share and donate please.

We are deeply saddened to share the news that on January 2, 2021, David Howell … Rashid Howell needs your support for Remembering David Howell - Memorial Fund

As we say hello to 2021 and goodbye to 2020 we reflect on our year. We could not have imagined the challenges this year brought. Justice, safety, equity, grief, uncertainty, resilience, trust, care, empathy, anger, love, rage, friendship, learning, growing, adapting, forgiveness, patience and transformative are just some words to describe this year. It has been really hard and pushed all of us to our limits in one way or another. We are so very grateful to be able to spend another year learning, growing, laughing, crying, problem solving, running, creating and caring for each other at The Free School. Thank you to everyone who supports us.

Deb Cavanaugh is battling a tick-borne disease, dizzy (and falling), with a fever. Deb has taught so many of our families how to be musical with our children, and generously enriched our communities for so many years. Here's our chance to give back. She lives fairly far outside of Albany, so we are collecting frozen meals for her at our home in Delmar and will deliver them to her once or twice a week. We can pick up your meals for her too. Send me a PM to schedule (or to get my phone number if that's easier). She needs a low-carb, no-sugar, low-fiber diet, and doesn't do red meat, so look at the links in comments for ideas. That means no whole grains or nuts or seeds; vegetables need to be well-cooked; and go heavy on the protein and dairy but skip the starches.
