We were at Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday for internment of Sgt Major Gary Fortunato who served Army in Vietnam, in Europe, and after retirement as an ROTC instructor.

Was standing with a number of Army officers and ROTC cadets when color guard passed by I joined them in salute to Flag, and later as Flag was folded. Reminder of the great privilege of being a member of Sons of the American Legion, while wearing cover, being able to salute the Flag.

Interesting to see that urn or box containing cremated remains were formally placed on back of horse drawn caisson and walked to internment site. A total of 40 Army soldiers supported the meticulous ceremony.

Worked with SGT Major Fortunato on color guard presentations at basketball games at MSG and the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade. Sgt Major managed the water obstacle course at the summer ROTC training in which 5,000 senior cadets from around the country annually participate.

Congratulations to Past Detachment of New York Commander, Jim Coates, presented with the prestigious Charles B. Rigsby Award VA&R Award at the National Convention in Phoenix on August 28th. Only the 2nd NYS Son to receive this National award. Items reported in his nomination:
• Jim is the ultimate professional in his demeanor, his work ethic, his helpful attitude, and his representation within the Organization and in the Community, and in his coordination with his local VA.
• Jim participates in many activities that his Squadron takes on, and in many sponsored by his Legion Family counterparts. He was an active participant in Veteran related events in the 7th District, such as the Brown Bag Snack program for employees of the VA Veterans Crisis Hot Line, and the County's Vaccination Clinic Snack program spearheaded by the Sons in 3 VA facilities in the Rochester area. During the Pandemic he volunteered at his VA 2 days a week making phone calls to Veterans reminding them of their appointments and assisting them in arranging for their Vaccinations. He has also taken on the role of being a very select group to provide "fresh air" visitations for Veteran Residents who have been confined to their respective Units at the Hospital during the Pandemic.
• As a faithful and consistent advocate, Jim has continued for over 8 years in providing es**rt services to Hospitalized Veterans on Christmas mornings, getting Veterans to religious services.
• Jim has volunteered, and continues to volunteer at Stand Down events in the Community for Homeless Veterans and their families. Jim is quick to lend his efforts and knowledge, in a professional manner, when help is needed. A few of the reasons stated in his nomination making him deserving of the award.

Sons of the Legion | The American Legion

All Concerned,

Many of you have experienced the inability to complete online transmittals with mylegion. This is due to the new software and updating the “pro forma” with membership dues for the new membership year. We attempted to make individual online membership renewals active on July 1st and starting the new membership year. This has proven to be a more monumental task and too much work to do all at one time.

For the time being, this is what is going to occur. Membership online transmittals will resume by Monday, July 13th or sooner. In the meantime, individual SAL membership renewal capability will have to be suspended until October 1, 2021. I understand this is not desirable; however, it will provide more time for squadrons to submit an SDR. Currently, the SDR response rate is less than 50% overall. In the long run and postponing online renewal will prove to be a prudent decision.

As of right now, if an individual were to renew their membership online and their squadron did not submit an SDR, the squadron would have to contact the member again to collect the remaining portion of membership dues (squadron per capita). I think everyone can admit this would be a major point of contention with our members. Everyone is looking for more convenience, not double work. Thank you for your patience as we work through these challenging issues.

Commander’s Message - July

Fellow Sons,

This is my final monthly message as your Commander. I am going to address only 1 topic – Membership. I know you are really surprised by this. 😊

One of my priorities as a Commander - Squadron, County, District, and Detachment – has been to achieve 100% membership. I realize we have had a lot of issues regarding getting membership submitted, between COVID and the new system being implemented, but we are continuing to do well. As of the last report, we are at 90.62%. This is a number we can be proud of. However, our work is not done. I would like to see our numbers increase toward that 100% mark by Department Convention at the end of July, and for National Convention at the end of August.

Let us show what The Detachment of New York can accomplish!

Keep up the good work! Remember the 3 R’s: Renew, Recruit, and Retain! Membership is the life blood of our organization, which enables us to do the great things we do for our veterans and their families.

For God & Country,

Dennis

A moment of pride and celebration as Detachment of NY Sons of The American Legion VA&R Chairman Gabe Cinquegrana and 2020-2021 Department of New York Auxiliary President Linda Tome share the results of this years' "They Walked For Us.. Let's Walk For Them Walk-A-Thon. The Walk produced a 15 year record $35, 772.26 in donations across the State, split evenly between the SAL and ALA Partners. The Sons share has already been divided up and sent to the 18 VA Medical Centers and State Veteran Homes, designated for their Homeless Programs. The Auxiliary share will be used to augment their VA&R Programs throughout the year. Either way, Veterans in New York State will be the recipients of a lot of hard work by a lot of people.
