Utility companies raked in bailout money and shut people's lights off anyway

That's right: Instead of keeping the lights on for millions of struggling Americans, these companies funneled more money into the pockets of their already wealthy executives.

As the coronavirus pandemic raged (well, first raged, since it continues to do so), utility companies across the country got a bailout. Through the CARES Act, the federal government distributed a collective $1.25 billion of taxpayer money to a...

WEEK OF ACTION DAY 3:

For too many Georgians, accessing health care services is accompanied by unaffordable medical bills and burdensome medical debt.

One in five people (19%) in Georgia have a medical bill in collection. For individuals of color, the rate of medical bills in collection increases to 21 percent.

In Dougherty County, home to the city of Albany and Phoebe Putney Hospital, 25% of individuals of color have a medical bill in collection.

Data show Black and brown people are the most affected by unaffordable health care and medical debt.

It is critical that hospitals develop their community benefit, billing, and collections policies through a racial justice and health equity lens.

In order to encourage consumers to share their stories, Georgia Watch, Georgians For a Healthy Future, and Sowega Rising officially launch the Dish the Debt campaign!

Visit www.georgiawatch.org/dishthedebt to tell us how medical debt has affected you.

We look forward to your participation in this campaign and to seeing the personal stories from Georgia consumers pour in!

WEEK OF ACTION DAY 2!

Utility justice is racial justice is economic justice. Citizens of Albany are struggling to make ends meet because of utility bills that are through the roof and the burden falls heaviest on Black women.

Albany is an economic, cultural, and metropolitan hub of GA, but residents are struggling with soaring utility bills. We need #utilityjustice today!

What are the tenets of #utilityjustice?
✨affordability
✨community control
✨stability
✨healthy households

Albany residents deserve #utilityjustice. That means low-income communities having a voice in the regulatory processes that determine the cost and distribution of energy resources.

Utility justice is essential to the health & wellness of low-income families in Albany, GA. Residents deserve a say in how prices of essential resources like energy are set.

Can you imagine having a monthly power bill that’s higher than your rent? People in Albany are struggling under the weight of their light bills. We need #UtilitiesJustice now.

No one should have to worry about their power being shut off because their electricity bills are higher than their monthly rent most months.

Local governments need to invest more money in opportunities for citizens to use alternative energy so that they can have more control over their utilities, reduce energy costs, and be more energy efficient.

Light bills are high in Albany because:
🚨Energy is monopolized
🚨The city is locked in to a decades-long contract
🚨Homes are not energy efficient
🚨Climate disasters impacted housing
Read our #utilityjustice report: https://9to5.org/ga-utilities-justice/#1623114656789-276f79f7-0b13

Working families in Albany are forced to choose between paying for their light bill and buying groceries. #UtilityJustice means never having to make those choices.

On Friday, SOWEGA Rising joined with nearly 400 organizations to urge Senators to support "the only health care policy in the #BuildBackBetter Act that directs resources specifically to low-income Americans, 60% of whom are people of color, who have no other pathway to coverage."

It is a matter of racial justice...to finally fulfill the promise of the ACA, we'll need bold action from Congress...we're urging you to correct this deep, historic injustice by closing the #CoverageGap once and for all.

The legacy of slavery has always been reflected in the design of Medicaid—in who has received it, and who hasn’t...eight of the 12 non-expansion states are former slave states. Health care can't wait.

Join the fight for Medicaid Expansion and urge your senators to #ClosetheCoverageGap !

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” It’s pretty good advice, unless the thing you’re trying to succeed at is spreading health misinformation during a global pandemic. With that being said, all available evidence suggests that the COVID-19 vaccines are perfectly safe during both pregnancy and breastfeeding.Stronger.org

The Delta Variant Is Making Covid a Pandemic of the Young

"It has been said countless times by public health figures that Covid-19 is now a pandemic of the unvaccinated. The line is easy to write, because it’s true. Breakthrough infections among the vaccinated are an issue, the virus lapping at the edges of our collective immunity."Stronger.org

The U.S. is in the middle of a fourth wave of infection from the highly contagious Delta variant, and yet many of our mitigation strategies have been thrown out the window. Study after study has proven that masks reduce the spread of COVID-19. But a vocal minority are battling mask mandates, turning a safety issue into a political flashpoint.

An influential model from the University of Washington predicts that 98,000 more Americans will die of COVID-19 by the start of December unless we change our behavior. “We can save 50,000 lives simply by wearing masks,” says Ali Mokdad, a professor of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington who is involved in the making of the projections.

Mask up. Limit your social activities. Get tested and stay home when you’re sick. And please, get vaccinated. We don’t need another 100,000 Americans dead.Stronger.org

Disease outbreaks in schools make national headlines—because they’re rare. And that’s because vaccines against serious communicable diseases are mandatory. Vaccine mandates for COVID-19 are trying to accomplish the same goal that’s been behind years of vaccine mandates: Keeping everyone safe, so that students can learn and live full lives.

It’s not a revolutionary idea. Just a good one.
