Congratulations and welcome home Carlos and Shannon!

A wonderful announcement to share: we've found the inn's next Directors, Carlos & Shannon Cardenas! They are here training with outgoing Directors Emily & Stuart Siegel, and will assume the Directorship just before Christmas.

They were both raised in Ajo and their families go back multiple generations here. After years working all over the world with the Air Force (Carlos) and in accounting/finance (Shannon), they've been eager to return home.

Their deep connection to this community, coupled with their professional experiences and warm presence, make them a great fit for this role. We can't wait for our guests, partners, and neighbors to meet them - come say hello if you're in town, and send them a welcome message in the comments here!

An Arizona mining town reinvents itself as an arts destination

This PBS NewsHour piece turned out really nicely. Thanks for all who contributed. The Sonoran Desert and Ajo in particular are truly special places. Special thanks to Casey Kuhn for putting this together. #OnlyinAjo

Ajo, Arizona, was once a robust mining community. Now it is seeking to cast off the image of a ghost town -- and reinvent itself as an arts destination of the Southwest. Stephanie Sy reports for our American Creators series and ongoing arts and culture coverage, Canvas.

Congratulations Maria!

We are thrilled to announce that Maria Singleton is our new Front Office Manager! We met Maria years ago when her daughter had a destination wedding at the inn. Maria enjoyed Ajo so much she came back and found a cool place to live here! She’s been a regular at SDCC and Ajo events for years now. She loves this town and she’ll be a sparkling presence in our front office beside Lucia and Rosa. Plus she’s an artist, community volunteer extraordinaire, cheese expert, and loving dog mama to big fluffy Coco. We’re so glad you’re with us, Maria. Welcome her to the team, everyone!

Unitarian Community Group starting in Ajo! Sundays 11:00 am-12:00 (1st meeting is Sunday 8/18/19) Studio 1206 (2nd fl) Curley School, 201 W Esperanza Ave (Parking in back, come up stairs on far right or use elevator) -BYOCC-(Bring your own lawn chair and cup of coffee) Light snack provided after meeting Order of Meeting 11:00 Guided meditation 11:10 Reading (TBA) and Discussion 11:30 Discussion of moving forward as a Unitarian group 11:45 Closing & Serenity prayer 11:50 Refreshments In Unitarian Universalism, you can bring your whole self: your full identity, your questioning mind, your expansive heart. All are welcome, no matter your faith or belief system. Maybe you believe simply in community and the power of the human spirit. Together, we join on a journey that honors everywhere we’ve been before. Beliefs are diverse and inclusive. We have no shared creed. We are united in our broad and inclusive outlook, and in our shared values. Direct experience of the transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the mysterious forces which create and uphold life. Words and deeds of prophetic people which challenge us to confront powers and institutions of oppression with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love; (from the likes of Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Gandhi, Emmet Fox, Bill & Bob of AA and Martin Luther King). Wisdom in allegory and meaningful motifs from the world's religions and belief systems can inspire us in our ethical and spiritual life; teachings which call us to respond to the Creator’s love by loving our neighbors as ourselves; and Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science. Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Unitarians have a legacy of “deeds not creeds”, working for a better world with action, but firstly within ourselves. Excerpts from UUA.org
