Congratulations to Vianka and Mireya, two of our interns, on their high school graduation! These two have been working so hard through out the pandemic to make sure the community has food through the Ajo COVID-19 Food Relief Program and the Ajo Food Pantry. They have also worked in our gardens, farms and at the Ajo Farmers Market & Cafe. For some of our interns, this is their first job. Thank you for all of your hard work and good luck as you both go off to college! #ajocsa

The Ajo Community Market in the Ajo Plaza, has been one of our partners on the COVID-19 Food Relief Program and Ajo Food Pantry. The Ajo Community Market is a 501(c)3 that was created to assist with food insecurity in Ajo. Our late Kord Klinefelter was instrumental in the development of the market. After the Ajo Community Market started, Kord was President and continued to be the largest supporter.

You can find the market located in what used to be part of Phelps Dodge Mercantile Building. The market now carries a variety of dried goods, canned goods, drinks and household items, all at discounted prices. New items are frequently posted on Ajo Mundo, Ajo Classifieds and Ajo Buy Sell Trade pages. As a non-profit in the community, the Ajo Community Market has made numerous donations to other groups in the community including, Pima County Animal Care Center, Ajo Food Pantry, Ajo Unified School District, and has assisted families after disasters have affected them.

The Ajo Community Market graciously accepts monetary donations. They can be dropped off in person at 15 W. Plaza Suite 155 Ajo, AZ or mailed to P.O. Box 84 Ajo, AZ 85321. Checks can be made payable to Ajo Community Market.

Study: Food Banks Embrace Need for Fair-Wage Advocacy - Food Bank News

Emergency food banking and Ajo Food Pantry are still a relatively new program for us, and the learning curve has been steep for us and the extensive partnership. But we certainly know that in a longer run free food alone won’t solve our regional hunger issues for Ajo and the Tohono O’odham. We believe we need to build up our own local capacity and assets to turn emergency food system from handouts to hand-ups, and also advocate for larger systemic changes. Want to join us??

Food banks plan to spend more time on fair-wage advocacy post-Covid than they did before Covid, according to a survey.

We would like to introduce two of our hard working Beginning Farmer Apprentices! If you’ve been following along with us on social media then you have seen photos of them working on different farms and helping with the Ajo Food Pantry distributions.

Juki Patricio is from the Tohono O’odham Nation, from Big Fields. He grew up with a family garden and started working with Tohono O’odham Community Action after high school, where he learned more about agriculture. When he heard an opening with Ajo CSA’s apprenticeship program opened up with Nina and Sterling, he was excited to get back into agriculture.

Elijah Marietta is from the Tohono O’odham Nation, from Ali Jek. He started gardening on his own and was eager to learn more. He began working with San Xavier Co-Op as a seasonal position and learned that an apprenticeship opportunity opened up with Ajo CSA.

Welcome to the team!

There is no better way to learn agriculture but by doing it! We are honored that one of the best Arizona farmers Farmer Frank Martin of Crooked Sky Farms agreed to provide an opportunity for our beginning farmer apprentices to lean hands-on this week working at his 130 acre farm in Duncan, AZ. The apprentices are learning about soil, irrigation, tractors, large-scale planting and transplanting, farm safety and other aspects of all-natural food production. #ajocsa #growingourown #oodhamfarmers #beginningfarmers #oodhamooidagkam

Local Foods and Food Hubs as a Tool for Community & Economic Development

Join us this Friday, May 14 at 9 am to hear from two communities that are utilizing local foods as a tool to develop healthier populations, greater food security, stable agriculture/food-related businesses and contribute significantly to their local economies. Presenters from two nonprofit organizations will discuss their approaches to food-based development. Leslie Schaller of ACEnet in Athens, Ohio will discuss their commercial, shared-use kitchen and how it developed, as well as their newer food hub distribution and processing facility located in Nelsonville, Ohio that offers cold storage, distribution, and meat processing to local growers, as well as the impact these facilities have had on the local/regional economy. Nina Sajovec, Director of the Ajo, AZ Center for Sustainable Agriculture, will discuss how we fulfill our mission through farmer’s markets, a store, a farm-to-table restaurant,a shared commercial kitchen, and many more programs designed to provide agricultural education, reduce barriers to healthy and culturally-appropriate foods, preserve and revitalize agricultural traditions, foster local, food-based economic development and establish valuable partnerships.

Today our Apprentices helped Mr. Kenny Tohono O'odham High School Garden Club Coordinator to plant traditional Crops like Ha:l, Hu:n, and Bawi in the field. Unfortunately we didn't have any students to help prepare the field and plant due to Covid but we hope they come back to see the field grow. Looking forward to this season of growing traditional Tohono O'odham Crops!

Building the Beast System: FDA wants GPS on crops – Spinach sends email – Cow registration mandates
Hello i would like to be entered into the raised bed raffle. I would most likely plant some okra, kale, cabbage, Swiss chard, beets, chives, green onions, cilantro, leaf lettuce. In addition i plan to plant some fruit trees to accuminay my garden beds. Thank you for your work. fc
I always love coming across a community centered on environmentally friendly and healthy sustainable agriculture. I've been looking more and more into regenerative farming techniques and seeing how I can apply what I learn to my personal gardening. I recently came across a YouTube trailer for a new Netflix Documentary called Kiss the Ground about how regenerative farming can be used to help heal the damage done by climate change. The film is an inspirational and hopeful work of passion from Josh and Rebecca Tickell that centers on how people around the globe can make a personal effort to heal our planet while we still can. The film also mentions how regenerative farming can lead to the production of more natural and efficient sources of food. The film even includes a handful of scientific and agricultural experts who explain how regenerative farming techniques can heal the soil, which in turn can eventually heal our atmosphere. I was completely absorbed in the film and learning more about how I can make a change to help save our planet! The trailer was incredibly inspiring and changed how I saw climate change as a global issue.
