We’ll see you all in 2021! #fairstrong

July is usually the busiest month for fairs, but this year, more than 50 percent have been cancelled -- with more added to the list each day.

It has a major economic impact on communities, especially rural areas. Fairs generate more than $4.7 billion in revenue annually with about 100-150 million people attending, according to IAFE-The Network.

Some fairs have been cancelled for the first time since World War II, including the Iowa State Fair.

Appreciated talking to Eric Campbell, a corn dog/pineapple whip vendor in Iowa, who is also a fourth-generation concessionaire with Campbell's concessions. His fair family history goes so far back, they say they pioneered the corndog in the Midwest. Now also known for their Double Bacon Corn Dog!

Thank you to all that came out to support our great vendors during our Norman County Food Fair. Everyone was very respectful of others space. Thank you to Whitney Pittman for singing to the crowd from an empty TRM Stage. Thank you to the Twin Valley Car Show and Valley Cruisers for coming out on Saturday. With no fair it was kind of bittersweet but we hope you all enjoyed a chance to have a little fair food. #NoCoFair2020 #FairStrong #funneverends

This picture is from last year. Just like the fair the Legion and VFW plus all of their volunteers took this year off for the health of their members and the many helpers. Just like the Norman County Fair the local Legion and VFW members will be back next year stronger than ever with more flags for their beautiful display honoring those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. #FairStrong

Noticed this email today from MN Extension in response to the State Fair cancellation. Looks like they are planning for Virtual judging for General and Livestock exhibits but are hoping to be able to have some sort of in person judging for Livestock.

Dear 4-H youth, families and volunteers,

It’s with a heavy heart that I acknowledge the Minnesota State Fair board’s decision to cancel the 2020 fair. Nearly 6,000 4-H’ers showcase their learning during the state fair, and so many caring adults and organizational partners contribute to this wonderful annual gathering.

Alternative state showcases are in the works

We support the decision made by the fair board and want you to know that we will deliver alternative experiences for 4-H animals and general projects. We’re working closely with the Minnesota State Fair and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to identify the time and place for these alternatives and have been testing virtual platforms that ensure judging can be offered.

Here are four important things you need to know now:

Virtual state judging for general projects will occur August 31 through September 5.
We are planning to conduct virtual livestock judging experiences. However, we are also exploring in-person judging events for livestock that may be carried out with the support of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and other partners. We are not promising in-person events, but are open to the possibility and will make a decision by mid-July.
We are making our decisions in accordance with UMN policies, Governor Walz executive orders, Minnesota Department of Health guidelines and CDC guidelines.
The June 1 animal ID deadline applies for all livestock exhibits.
Pathways from county to state showcases

We are committed to ensuring a pathway from local fairs to state showcases. 4-H educators are working in collaboration with fair boards and other partners to offer general and livestock project judging at a local level in July and August.

Please provide your thoughtful feedback regarding the alternative showcases we’re preparing. I welcome your unique perspectives. While we are planning for county judging to be virtual, we are open to in-person options.

Helping our young people cope with loss

This state fair cancellation is deeply disappointing. 4-H activities are an important highlight of the year for many youth and families. We also recognize that this comes at a time when youth have already experienced major life changes and other losses. We have assembled some resources for youth and adults on coping with these cancellations in the hope that they support and encourage you.

As always, 4-H is here. We will adapt, we will remain strong, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that Minnesota youth can thrive.

Sincerely,

Jennifer A. Skuza
Minnesota 4-H state director

Ada, MN -- If the Norman County Fair is “where summer begins,” than if this year’s fair doesn’t happen, will summer actually get underway? One thing is certain, summer certainly won’t be the same as the Norman County Fairboard announced this weekend that the  125th Norman County Fair wil...

NORMAN COUNTY FAIR POSTPONED UNTIL JUNE 2021

There has been only one time in our 125-year history that the Norman County Fair has not been held. The irony is that too was caused by a virus during the 1918 Flu epidemic. Our goal is to always support the community with the respect and responsibility for all attendees, workers and volunteers. In these difficult times, it is for those same reasons, and with heavy hearts, the decision has been made to postpone the 125th Norman County Fair until June 23-26, 2021. We know this is the correct decision for the Fair and to ensure the celebration can go on for the next 125 years.

The safety and health of our entire community, guests, volunteers, and exhibitors is our first priority and always top of mind when making our decisions. We did not make this decision lightly. At each and every step we took into account not only the time and effort that goes into planning the fair, but also the impact on the economy of our area. However, with the uncertainty of the times, and unknown challenges or future guidelines we are unable to be fully confident in the fact that it will be safe to gather and celebrate at the end of June 2020.

With this decision made we can pivot our energy towards continued improvements on the Fairgrounds. Through efforts of our fairboard members with assistance from our “friends of the fair”, we will be working on projects, and completing updates to the buildings and grounds. We are considering hosting a fall event that will bring the community back together.

We thank you for your support and patience with us during this difficult time. We appreciate our financial supporters and continue to welcome any donations to assist in the improvements on the Fairgrounds.

The Norman County Fair is typically held the last weekend of June in Ada, Minnesota. For all up to date information follow us on Facebook or go to our website www.NormanCountyFair.com
