Project Piece Education Your 1-stop space for tuition, free learning resources including tutorials plus free homework advice with Ask My Tutor & Free lesson tasters.

No block booking required & all tutors are DBS enhanced certified. Sign up for your fortnightly newsletter As a qualified educator, journalist and founder of Projectpiece Education, my experience involves teaching English language and literature from Key Stage 3 - GCSE level and as a second language with children and young adults. I am also qualified to teach up to graduate level, in media studies, drama, and academic study skills. From an applied drama background, I have been privileged to engage learners in new and creative ways that also inspired some of the most disaffected among them to participate. Applied drama techniques are tools that help to motivate, inspire and gently challenge people to collaborate and experiment, in a safe space, their way out of seemingly insurmountable challenges. This work continues to be a truly humbling and personally rewarding experience. By exploring real issues from a multitude of perspectives on conflicting issues such as identity and belonging, prejudice and discrimination, citizenship and homelessness, poverty and crime, division and class, race and politics, we learn to understand each other better, until harmony replaces where once conflict used to live. Applied drama processes similarly equip actors and non-actors with key-skill-sets that enable and empower us to explore our own barriers to success, whilst provoking compassion for the self and others. Drama provides us with opportunities to share our experiences and to rehearse real life experiences in a safe space; enabling us to feel better equipped to deal with the real thing when it happens. From 2011-2014, Project piece welcomed Dr. Jean-Robert Cadet to the UK, to continue sharing his advocacy work, abolishing the Restavek system in his birth country, Haiti. Together, we engaged young audiences in conversations on the subject of children's rights and we helped them to link their significance to global citizenship and the building of sustainable futures. Let us know what you are passionate about so we might help you raise awareness about those issues too - we may be able to support you by organising events to engage wider, public audiences to join your cause - ask us for details.

Did you know ... “[..] in a letter titled The Mission of English Lit to the Times Literary Supplement from 1984, Martin Jarrett-Kerr wrote: "My old Oxford tutor, H F Brett-Smith, was exempt from military service; but was employed by hospitals to advise on reading matters for the war-wounded. His job was to rate novels and poetry for the 'fever chart'. For the severely shell-shocked he selected Jane Austen."”

“She needed a hero. So that is what she became.” (Anon) ❤️

If we want to talk powerful women, how about Joan Beaufort, wife of James I of Scotland. OTD in 1437, James and Joan were cornered in their Perth lodgings where the king was 'barbarously assassinated'. Though 'villanously wounded in two places', Joan survived.

The queen managed to spirit her six-year-old son James to Edinburgh, and after recovering from the 'very cruel' attack, crushed the men who ordered her husband's death, in particular the king's uncle Walter Stewart, Earl of Atholl. He was dragged naked through the streets, before being disembowelled, beheaded and quartered.

Her husband's enemies defeated, Joan had cleared the path for her son to be crowned King of Scots on 25 March 1437, the first Beaufort-blooded king, a quarter-century before Edward IV and half-century before Richard III and Henry VII.

Tuition & a bundle of free lesson resources from Key Stage 2-5, inc. GCSE’s, level 3 (A’ level & BTEC) + resources for undergraduates in English language, literature, drama, media studies & humanities.

We also offer academic study skills' support and ESOL materials for international students, including a supply of good reads by prominent UK and international writers and access to thought-provoking videos, bogs and vlogs to boot.

For younger learners we upload free learning resources, activities and ideas to help you support your STEM subject learning and we also share some great opportunities for our learners to develop their emotional literacy through purposeful drama and community initiatives.

Our aim is to teach and mentor our learners; to nurture an insatiable curiosity for knowledge, enrichment and empathy for humanity & our planet.

By enabling & empowering students, we already know you will set yourselves higher learning goals. As your curiosity & enthusiasm for learning grows, so your sense of achievement, self-esteem and confidence will naturally follow. Then watch as you grow in confidence, as with anything we do in life, you feel a sense of achievement and in response to that success, you will notice your heart pump with yet more confidence as your empathy for the world around you grows you as a person. So, as your sense of achievement blossoms in incremental stages, over time you are likely to notice a marked improvement in your academic performance but perhaps even more valuable than that, you will have found your passion for lifelong learning and being an active citizen, one who shares in the freedom of opportunity and assimilates a sense of responsibility to humanity, our communities and to the planet.

Our Story

Connecting what we know with what we do is key to building healthy relationships, continuing personal development and enhancing emotional literacy. Learning to work together gives rise to the acquisition of the soft-skill-sets that employers repeatedly claim are lacking among the new generation of scholars. The modern workplace needs a dynamic team of collaborators, innovators and visionaries who collectively are able to add value to their role, department, organisation and wider communities. By sharing established and measurable applied drama methodologies we aim to engage children and young people in education using techniques that invite experiential learning. This socially inclusive approach aims to include the expressions of everyone including young people who may have been denied their right to voice an opinion or contribute to a group. A different perspective within a group can significantly alter its dynamics and challenges others to explore their existing thinking patterns and associated behaviours. Applied drama techniques such as Augusto Boal's games for actors and non-actors provokes insight by facilitating experiential learning processes that nurture trust, cooperation and empathic understanding. Projectpiece respects all governing articles found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), recognising each person's democratic right to be an active citizen in the communities in which they live. Projectpiece continues to reach out to other countries, such as Haiti and Sub-Saharan Africa, where community 'togetherness' is collectively known as "UBUNTU" and easily understood by the following explanation: "I am who I am because of who we all are" Desmond Tutu 2008. This sentiment governs the founding principles of all co-operative movements which places humanity before the profiteering interests of the minority rich. UBUNTU represents equitable representation and distribution of resources for majority rich communities.

We believe there is always something we can learn from each other, whilst every new experience yields insight, those of us who share expression with others will probably also write the future for tomorrow’s world.
