Today we commemorate European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day

“Today, Europe must learn from the past so that, together, we can fight antigypsyism in the present. […] Because only when Roma and Travellers’ fundamental, legal rights are respected will members of those communities be able to live as equal members of society, free from fear and stigmatisation, as every individual should.”

So said our Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić in her message for the Day: https://bit.ly/3ih8emM

"We will not stop our human rights activities." Statement by Human Rights Center "Viasna"

Today took place an unacceptable attack by the Belarusian dictatorial regime against prominent #HumanRightsDefenders & Human Rights NGOs : the offices of the Belarusian Association of Journalists, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the Lawtrend Center for Legal Transformation, the Movement for Freedom and the Association of Belarusians of the World "Fatherland", the Gender Perspectives, the Office of European expertise and communication, and others.

it's a step forward to destroy the freedom of expression and fundamental freedoms defended by Human Rights activists

International #solidarity with #civilsociety in #Belarus and #sanctions are more than necessary to defeat this dictator

Via Anna Rurka

On 14 July 2021, the Belarusian authorities again attacked human rights organizations and other NGOs, human rights defenders, and activists. Viasna condemns the new wave of repression against members of our organization and civil society in Belarus and declare that we will not stop our human rights....

Free Bartosz Kramek! [OPEN LETTER]

The Standing Committee has signed the letter to the Polish authorities calling for activist #BartoszKramek's immediate release:

"We are writing to express our deep concern about the detention of Mr Bartosz Kramek, a Polish activist and the Chair of the Supervisory Board of the Open Dialogue Foundation (ODF), a Poland-based international NGO on the frontlines of the fight for the rule of law in the country. Since 2017, ODF, its activists and associated entities have become targets of multiple government-sponsored attacks and disinformation campaigns in retaliation for their much-needed watchdog activities, including keeping EU bodies apprised of the alarming developments in the country."

Over 100 notable academics, public officials, journalists, human rights activists, and NGOs from all over the world are calling on the Polish government to release Bartosz Kramek- a civic activist and Chair of the Supervisory Board of the Open Dialogue Foundation who has become a victim of governmen...

« The genocide of Srebrenica was the most horrible atrocity in Europe since the Second World War, one we all thought impossible.

Nationalism, hatred and ethnic cleansing led to death, destruction and human rights violations on a massive scale on our continent. The immeasurable suffering of the families and loved ones of those killed lasts until the present day.

The tragedy cannot be undone. However, we must continue to remember Srebrenica, honour the victims and work for tolerance among the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina and of all of Europe so that such an atrocity may never happen again. »

Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić on the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide

Ten years ago, the world gained a powerful tool in the fight to stop violence against women and domestic violence!

It's called the Istanbul Convention and it:

🧡 brings hope and a greater feeling of safety to millions of women and girls.
🧡 brings the extent of violence against women into the open.
🧡 helps victims speak out, enables professionals to respond appropriately, and instils a
🧡 sense of trust and hope in women and girls.
🧡 protects individuals in the family from violence, no matter what the legal definition of
🧡family or marriage is in a country.
🧡 promotes respect and equality for all women and girls.
Put simply, it saves lives!

10th anniversary of the Council of Europe Istanbul Convention: 'Nothing will make us back down'

👉 “It is because of misconceptions that one of our member states withdrew from this Convention. Our best response to these false truths is to expand the circle of States Parties to this treaty, and we have already started to do that. I have received the instrument of ratification from Liechtenstein, and other member states, such as Ukraine and the United Kingdom, are also moving towards ratification. In these countries - and in all countries - the support of parliamentarians is crucial,” said Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
👉 “Nothing will make us back down. On the contrary, this entire Organisation - each of its components - will gather its strength and make further progress - for the benefit of women across Europe and beyond,” she concluded.

“As we seat here and debate, women will be beaten to death. And we are not just talking about a few cases, but about thousands and thousands and thousands of acts of violence. Just think about it”, PACE President Rik Daems said at the opening of an event organized in the framework of the PACE...
