#OTD - Skvyra, #Ukraine

There were two mass ex*****ons of Jews in Skvyra. The first one was carried out #OnThisDay in 1941 during the liquidation of the ghetto and was conducted by Germans and Ukrainian police. During this 'Aktion', circa. 850 Jews were first taken to school n°2, and from there, they were brought by foot or by truck to the Jewish cemetery, where they were shot in four pits. According to the witness interviewed by Yahad, the shooting lasted from 11am to 5pm. The Jews were shot in small groups. Before being shot, they were forced to undress and pushed on to a plank placed across the pit.

“On September 19 (1942), at the indicated time, 480 residents gathered at the indicated place in Stepnoye. The majority of them were women, children, and elderly people. Once all the valuables were taken away from the Jews, the massacre of the Soviet civilian citizens started. It was Germans and their collaborators who conducted it. Huge German buses, with black curtains inside, arrived on the spot. The Jews were forced to get on in groups of 60-70 people. 10-15 minutes later, the crammed vehicles left, and then came back for the next groups. As a result, 480 people (women, children, and elderly people) were transported outside Stepnoye. It was established that they all were murdered with exhausts gases inside the vehicles. Their bodies were then thrown into large pits and covered with a thin layer of soil." Our team on the ground in #Poland has just begun Yahad - In Unum's 37th research trip in the country, focusing the research on the area north of Krakow. The first testimony recorded was given by Helena, born in 1931, who witnessed a killing of a group of 4 Jews who had been trying to hide in the area surrounding of the village of Gory. They were discovered, put under arrest and killed by Germans. Helena shared her powerful recollection of the event with our team: “There was a 4-year-old girl among the victims. She was crying really hard. They all had to undress before the shooting. They were buried on the spot. I saw it all with my own eyes as I was hiding behind bushes.” Today there is no memorial at the site.

“On September 17 (1941), white partisans from the security service arrived from Šakiai. The Jewish quarters were sealed off again by white partisans. Big carts started arriving at the square. At about 11 AM, the loading of Jewish families began. The houses were sealed, while their residents were brought to the Paražniai Forest, where two huge pits had already been prepared. Germans were giving commands and taking photographs, while white partisans were shooting. Babies were beaten in the end against the trees and thrown into the pit. Women, children and teenagers were undressed and pushed into the pits. Pregnant women were pierced with bayonets in the abdomen and thrown into the pits. People screamed in panic. Many of them lost their minds. A Jewish woman, Kats, with an 8-year-old boy escaped the shooting, but the next day she was caught and shot with her child.” [Deposition of unnamed witness, taken on April 6, 1945, RG-22.002M.7021-94/434, p. 33] - Soviet Archives

"On September 16, 1942, according the order of German major, the local police arrested us with others Jewish families. We were taken to the police building situated in the village of Petropavlovkaya. We stayed there three nights. Then, my mother and my brother were loaded on a truck that took them to the kolkhoz "Stalin" where they were shot. The bodies were thrown into a well. The police officer A.S. Tarasenko spared me." [Deposition of Raisa N., born in 1926, a child from a mixed mariage; RG-22.002M/7021-16/141] - Soviet Archives

Our team on the ground in #Latvia investigating the #Holocaust by bullets interviewed Imants-Voldemars K. born in 1931, who witnessed the massacre of Jews in Jelgava. "One morning I went with a friend to the forest to pick mushrooms. Suddenly we heard a noise and hid in the bushes. We could hardly breathe because there were dogs that could smell us. Twenty meters ahead of us, Jews were being shot. They had to go down into the pit in groups of 20 and were shot. Then another group would come in and this continued all day. We did not leave until the Germans had gone. They had filled in the pit but we could still see people's hair sticking out of the ground".

“In the evening on September 14th, 1942, I was called by the head of the kolkhoz. I was told to say my farewells to my children and family and appear at the meeting point on September 15th, at dawn. When I was leaving, I was clearly told that if I escaped, my children and my husband’s parents would suffer the consequences. We left the kolkhoz at dawn. A cart was requisitioned to transport our belongings, because according to the order each person could take 30kg of personal belongings. Once we arrived at the Kommandantur, the armed Germans surrounded us immediately. They were very nice and helpful and that attitude reassured the overwhelmed people. The people who were gathered there consisted only of women, elder people and children of all ages, including babies. There were only two men: one Romanian Jew, Rabinovich, and one Ukranian Jew, Shneider. After that, we were registered and had our passports confiscated. We were offered to buy half a of loaf of bread for the way, just in case we did not have enough food later. The German and Russian police asked for two and a half rubles for a half loaf. For 20 minutes, they let us have breakfast and feed the children. After that, we were told that we would be taken by truck and then by train to the place of our permanent residence. Satisfied and reassured by this malicious and sophisticated fascist lie, the Jews walked towards the covered truck in rows of two guarded by armed fascists.” - Deposition of a Jewish survivor, Suzanna B., given to the State Extraordinary Commission on August 10th, 1943 - Soviet Archives.
