READY TO WELCOME MMXX !!!

Simplicity on the table. Starting with a subtle hand embroidered flax linen tablecloth from Maison Porthault called “volutes et raisins”. Mistletoes and anemones for the centerpiece. Marbleware plates from La Tuile a Loup in yellow and black. Vintage Murano stemware in a distinctive shade of gold and off white. The silverware is Christofle.

To the eyes of a Frenchman, steeped in the Parisian cacophony of tin roofs, narrow winding streets and red chimney pots, the breathing space of tree-lined Dallas parkway, with its generous verdant median, was an epilogue to four days of southern hospitality. From the quiet evening curb side, stone flags marked a path towards rank upon rank of paned windows, whose soft interior lights shown gently across manicured lawns, silhouetting a cozy porch ensconced within the classical outlines of a grand and charming façade. Absolutely everything beckoned.

The genial welcome that awaited was a product of both the graciousness of Ann, my hostess, and of the bounty of visual treasures that surrounded me and delighted my eyes. From a flower-filled vessel gracing the foyer’s central pedestal table in homage to that race of cattle called “abondance” to the succession of treasure box rooms passed through, each more precious and elegant than the last, it was the sensation of harmony, warmth and cordiality throughout that so enthralled the senses. It is to Cathy Kincaid that we are indebted for this singular sensation of unpretentious comfort amid splendors.

In the dining room, I am touched to see Ann's table dressed in celebration of La Tuile à Loup and what the ethos of its wares means to me. Each detail or embellishment reminds me of the immense satisfaction I derive from what I do. And though far from my home in Paris, everything seems somehow amiable and familiar – the very keys to truly beautiful decor.

Ann shows me a Nymphenburg porcelain service of hers fashioned in decidedly contemporary tones. Though manifestly different from the tradition-imbued ceramics on offer at La Tuile à Loup, its design resonates with every hallmark of artisanal fabrication. As we share praise to the glory of handmade wares, I am comforted in the knowledge that there remain many others who continue to recognize and pay tribute to the authenticity and uniqueness of craftsmanship.

I am offered the place of honor at the table. To my right is the revered American photographer Laura Wilson, whose witty discourse and insights into history and culture gleaned while memorializing the American West end in a diktat: it is imperative that I take an interest in the French humanist photographer Henri Cartier Bresson!

Once again, the sincerity of a warmhearted hostess, the joys of sharing fine wines with a delicious meal, and the glories of a prodigiously appointed dinner table have served to transport all to a parallel realm filled with laughter, complicity, smiles, and amusing anecdotes. The conviviality spills over into adjacent rooms after dinner, suffusing new friendships and exchanges with an aura of snug yet uninhibited luxury; the most addictive of guilty pleasures that I know. That evening drenched us all in sybaritic pleasures.

I have still to return to Earth after Dallas!

Here’s to you, dearest Ann, in expression of my deepest gratitude.
Eric

Christmas gifts... 🎁🎁🎁. Fewer this year, all tasteful and well thought of, which makes me very happy.

ONE STOOD OUT BY FAR THOUGH: A two-page spread in VERANDA MAGAZINE January/February 2020. My favorite part of this feature article about La Tuile à Loup and myself is the text by Deputy Editor Ellen McGauley: very accurate and thorough!!!

I am very partial to words, the weight of words. They go far beyond...

I am elated and most thankful.

Needless for me to comment on this article now. If you wanna find out, please purchase a copy at your local newspaper stand or bookshop. If you don't live in the US like myself, a digital copy can be purchased online, look it up. I would be pleased to hear your thoughts once you've read the article, page 54 and 56.

Christmas shopping in Paris on a Sunday. Where do I go shopping in when I am not at La Tuile à Loup ? It is an easy one. Mostly at the flea market. But today I ventured in the city despite the strikes, looking for specific late 18th century / early 19th century sterling silver tumblers then gold coins for my godsons. I ended up at a favorite shop La Maison
du Bac-Paris. It is on the left bank only two blocks away from the department store Le Bon Marché - Rive Gauche.

Octavie and Cecile carry a beautiful selection of exquisite antique finds mixed with contemporary pieces of the best quality including Saint Louis chrystal glass and Ercuis silverware. It is no surprise that these sisters from a family of antique dealers opened their own boutique to bridge the gap between the past and the now, left bank style. It is all about layers of tradition then modernity.

Among the major pieces which caught my attention today, this contemporary sterling silver cabbage shaped soup tureen and it charger platter. Wondrous to behold!!!

I didn’t get the tumblers for my godsons, instead I bought new sterling silver tumblers for myself, already on my table tonight. I am thrilled !!!!

It is one of those evenings, I don’t remember how I got home because for over an hour I was replaying the whole week in my head jumping from one subject to another like in a novel by Virginia Woolf. The minute I dropped the bags of grocery on the kitchen counter, I felt like Krug, not just champagne. My brain had already made all the necessary connections. Down the cellar I went to reach for a bottle of vintage 2002. I save those bottles for special occasions and it was already obvious in my mind that a quiet evening with no deadline to meet or appointment to keep is the perfect special occasion for Eric. I can leisurely use a different side of my brain to focus on flavors and unleash different emotions. Barely chill the nectar, it will breathe in my glass after all: I chose a Murano glass coupe even though a large burgundy wine glass would have been appropriate to allow the aromas to develop.

Stirring a crab risotto on the stove ( a favorite recipe from “Porthminster Beach café’s cookbook, page 53) from one hand, drinking my krug vintage 2002 from the other hand. Lady soul aka Aretha Franklin’s voice fills the air: “you make me feel 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵 “. Not very Christmassy but again it is a special evening, I am taking care of myself and counting my blessings.

Later tonight I may watch “A single man” by Tom Ford. I wish to see Colin Firth and my all time favorite actress Julianne Moore dance and then fight over nothing: a deep special bond between two old friends.

BLUE & TANNED. Size: 26,1/2 inches high x 14,3/4 inches wide at the top (68 cm high x 37,5 cm wide at the top). It is a one of a kind vase. I envision it in a winter garden or a conservatory on a vintage rattan table or by the fireplace filled with ferns or branches. It comes with a beautiful stand. A personal favorite at the moment.

Purple tulips, I love them.

It is teatime: Keemun imperial, a Chinese black tea.

In the background: the so called “DISSONANCE” String Quartet No. 19 in C Major, K. 465, W. A. Mozart , played by Quatuor Mosaïques. It sounds accurate and it is definitely very insightful. In my opinion they are the most prominent in chamber music.

Trying a new scented candle tonight. Not quite sure that we will get along because in general I am very hesitant about fragrance changes.

A beautiful container is the key to a remarkable floral arrangement. It enhances the beauty of the flowers. In this instance an orchid with enormous petals. At first, I considered 7 bulbs of dark red amaryllises to plant in our marbleware pottery cache-pot, but given the temperature inside the boutique, an orchid was a wiser choice.

This cache-pot would be an excellent gift at Christmas. Size: 14,1/8 inches wide and 12,3/8 inches high. We have a pair.

From, and in honor of Ane, Nicole, Yvonne, Anne, François, Sylvie, Francis, Jean-Christophe, Annelise, Yvonne, Christine, Ewa - to name but a few among the artists and artisans that we are indebted to, and who maintain the standard of creativity we hold so dear at La Tuile à Loup - as well as from my treasured staff (Maguy, Yannick, Sandrine) and myself: our sincerest wishes for a heartfelt Thanksgiving to all of our American friends!

It is essential to pause for a moment and count our blessings here. They are many: the discerning nature of our customers; their trust and faith in the value of our work; their commitment to supporting that work, through the purchases and joyful incorporation of our objects into their day to day lives. It is this that allows us to passionately uphold and refine the spirit of French countryside table traditions in complete freedom of expression. We are thankful for your belief in that expression and we respond by advancing ever further in our efforts to convey to our patrons a unique and characteristic form of beauty.

My grateful thoughts for the happiness of each of you steadfastly remain. I hope that you will find a part of your own thankfulness in the distinction of articles from La Tuile à Loup gracing the epicurean bounty of your holiday tables. Over-indulgence oblige!

From Paris, France to all of you, the happiest of Thanksgivings!

Avec notre profonde gratitude,

Eric C. Goujou

“The best yet!!!” Waving 👋 goodbye to Dallas today with mixed emotions. I could use a profusion of over the top superlatives right on the moment, but NO. I need time to select and organise the numerous photos to share by topic. Moreover, I need to reflect, then articulate my thoughts. A few posts are coming for certain... A stunning eye-popping surprise took me back to October 30-31 2018. For the time being, here are some of my photos from my visit at Nick Brock antiques store yesterday. It was a beautiful reward after the La Tuile à Loup pop up shop at Ellis Hill this week.

J’aime beaucoup cette boutique d’antiquaire qui a un point de vue affirmé et une sélection mise en situation pour permettre aux clients de se faire une idée. Ceci est un exemple de l’avenir inéluctable des boutiques d’antiquaires.

The latest entry from my travel log:

Here I am, back in the U.S.A. again, one of my favorite places that I visit as often as I can!

This is a trip which is always as much about my inner self as the change in geography; it means altering my language, my way of looking at things, the expression of my enthusiasm, the manner in which I offer thanks, or even the gestures and words I use for demonstrating solicitousness and kindness.

Ever since my last visit in August 2019, I have been mulling over the mutual fascination that has existed since time immemorial between the U.S. and France.

Observed through my French lenses while on the Parisian side of the Atlantic, America screams Hollywood, movie stars, wide-open spaces, high performance everything, unbounded productivity, progress, and optimism. It is a devotion to mega-entertainment, leisure time activities and the world of professional sports.

When it is la France I espy, I find it much more difficult to reduce things to precise set of attributes, though a supremacy of history and culture underscored by sophistication, the sensual pleasures, charm, seduction, and the insistence on making time for all things necessary are qualities that most often come to mind.

And speaking of making time: the @latuilealoup pop-up boutique taking place for the next three days will see ME making time to enjoy the presence of our customers who, like me, take delight in the beauty of familiar, domestic objects, and all of les arts de la table. I am anxious to recount the significance of these artisanal, everyday objects as harbingers of our civilization, and how their testament to the creative zeitgeist and craftsmanship of an era plays out across the more grandiose stage of human history.

How to accomplish such a feat?

By delving into the realms of reverie and pleasure; more specifically, in the pleasure of creating the table of your dreams through provision of an ideal medium – our array of colorful and beautifully crafted pieces – and the presence of that supremely ideal unit of measure – your infallible, personal taste.
