Facing this growing civic disaffection across Europe, it is more critical than ever to foster citizens’ engagement for a collective project and the emergence of a European public space where the role and influence of civil society are fully recognized though the setting up of a genuine European civil dialogue.

In December, the Janez Janša’s government once again targeted funding of NGOs by attempting to abolish the state’s fund for NGOs in the 7th anti-corona stimulus package. Following a great mobilisation of NGOs and citizens against this move, the amendment abolishing the NGO fund was removed from the 7th anti-corona stimulus package approved in the Parliament on 29 December.

🚨 This week, the global civic space monitor (CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation) downgraded 🇸🇮 Slovenia's rating from open to narrowed.
Janša’s government has been eroding Slovenian democracy during the pandemic, with constant attacks on media, demonstrators and CSOs. But protests woke up the country and revitalised Slovenian civic mobilisations.

Brezplačne treninge bomo izvajali do konca epidemije in ukrepov.

📣 #Activizenship5 is almost here! Last call for registrations!
📅 We launch our #CivicSpaceWatch report 2020 this Tuesday 8 December (3:00-5:15 PM)!
🚨 The pandemic is a crash test for our democracies and the rule of law. This year, at least five European countries (Greece, France, Poland, Denmark, United Kingdom) have passed or have on the table bills restricting the right to protest beyond COVID-19.
On 3 December 2020, representatives of the EU institutions and civil society have raised concerns about recent attacks on the right to protest in an event organised by the European Civic Forum, together with the Spanish associations Novact and Iridia - Centre de Defensa de Drets Humans.
👇 Read our tribute in POLITICO Europe to those who are always at the forefront of each crisis, with few means and little power. To those that every day, all over Europe, try to plug the holes of this society, through the advancement of rights, of social inclusion, of equality.
‘Civic actors are not phantoms, we exist, we are a resource for Europe. We call on institutions to recognize and support the work we do and the values we defend’
🇫🇷 France is shrinking the #civicspace and weakening the #RuleOfLaw. Three legal issues ring alarm bells:
🔽 Closure of mosques and moves to dissolve CSOs
🔽 The global security law #LoiSecuriteGlobale
🔽 Fast-track procedure for a law to reform public research programming
ECF is alarmed by statements made by the French government aimed at shrinking the civic space and weakening the rule of law.

Human Rights For All
The Civil Society Days are approaching - 24/25 May 2018
The European Civic Forum (ECF) is a transnational network that brings together over 100 associations and NGOs across 27 countries in Europe, actively working on issues such as citizenship education, defence of Human Rights and the advocacy of Democracy.
Our vision of citizenship
Built essentially around an economic dimension, the European project lacks of the pillars enshrined in the Treaties – Solidarity and Democracy – to be able to overcome the wide gap between citizens and European institutions. Associations and NGOs play a crucial role in this civic ownership. Associations provide an ideal environment for debate and the formulation of projects which respond to citizens’ aspirations. They are fulfilling an important function, strengthening the ties in a community life, promoting inclusion and social innovation. Associations also are spokespersons of citizens’ aspirations for equality, solidarity and democracy.
Thus, they are a key factor in building, assisting and monitoring public policies, but they also make sure that decisions made by institutions reflect as much as possible citizens’ concerns. An associative participation recognised by institutions at the European level can bring back enthusiasm for building a Europe of social justice, a Europe ensuring an access to education and culture for all, which would be a leading example in the defence of Human Rights and of cultural diversity. This vision of the relations between citizens, associations and institutions is precisely at the core of European Civic Forum’s action, since its creation in 2005.
