Today we will start breaking down our workshop activities to give a better idea about what we plan to do and how we intend to benefit the children.

The photography workshop will focus on helping them document their daily lives through photography. The children will receive disposable cameras and will be taught how to use them.

With your support, we can do that! Help us make the photography workshop happen and donate here:http://bit.ly/1Nfe7de

Please be a part of this campaign.
We find it powerful and moving to each one of us. We are not just numbers of thrown tortured dead bodies tossed around and dumped somewhere!!!
We, they, he and she, and us, alll of us, alive and dead are/were humans, who have/had a life to live, goals to achieve, people to love, places to be, things to know and learn and teach...Feel it.

imagine what it feels like to suddenly just become a drop dead soul less body colder than ice n by force have it all taken aeay ftom you. The more and the better you say you want to live. The harder they try to silence you. Those who were already silent. No one hears or sees them. They do not exsist to life.
Your death. Your numbers of death, your death cirtificate if you even got one are life the shakers and movers to the lives of others.
Some death certificates&body numbers > by value and impact >than most birth cirtificates.

Yara on our latest Watanili mission: A harsh winter for displaced Syrians in Reyhanli,Turkey

This time, it seemed a bit strange; there was something unsettling or perhaps it was the paranoia that has invaded my mind when I found out that Jamal Maarouf has recently moved there, three weeks ago.

We were less than last time, about seven volunteers as we thought the mission was quick and short. The aim was to distribute winter blankets for displaced Syrian families to keep them warm in these cold months of winter.

The cold in Reyhnali was unbearable, ‘the cold of the bones’ as we used to call it in Syria. We were stuffed with jackets and layers covering our countenance. I never really understood what it meant to be warm, something that I took for granted and never really thought about until I held Khadijeh’s little freezing hand.

Khadijeh , 5, was one of the kids that we visited this past September. She ran towards us happily as she saw us walking towards the shelter from afar. She was excited to see us come back.

I held her tiny hand and asked her: Khadijeh, do you remember me? Yes, we remember all of you. You drew something nice on my face last time. Khadijeh was cold but quiet as if it was normal for her to feel this way. The cold was becoming a norm, something that displaced Syrian kids were becoming accustomed to, and we were shamelessly nagging about.

The next day, we had collected the blankets and departed our way to distribute them to families that we already knew were in dire need. The moment we arrived, we saw children barefooted patrolling over the mud.

The mud was all over place, and the rain was heavily pouring yet the kids had no socks, the parents had not enough blankets, no warm clothes, but a roof over their heads and in some cases, a roof so poorly constructed that rain drops kept leaking.

We thought we would provide winter blankets, as the most needed main item; only to find out that there is so much more needed.

The houses or partially finished, poorly equipped shelters were lacking many basic winter necessities from firewood to barrel heaters. Some lacked raw material such as cement and aluminum to stop the rain from dropping into the house, keeping the pillars of the place intact; shelters in general desperately needed a whole reconstruction project to restore the space.

There was so much to be done, so much needed, far more many families in need of blankets, firewood, mattresses, all the little things that keep a decent house warm, except that there was nothing decent about these places.

I remember Jude asking curiously: ‘where are all these organizations supposedly claiming to help and deliver winter packages? Why are they not coming here?’

There was such a shortage that we launched another campaign, in collaboration with friends as we got back to raise more funds and provide them with more winter necessities.

Abou Youssef, an old man, displaced and living with his family of five, had his back broken and could not sleep properly from the pain; we brought him a confortable mattress for his pain back.

Rashideh wanted some mattresses as they were twelve in the family and many of them were sleeping on the floor and some firewood to light up the barrel heater and warm up the place.

Amira was relatively in a better position given that she had a working heater in place. She wanted some money however to pay her rent but we told her that we could not afford it as we have many other priorities and families in grimmer situations.

The last day we went to distribute more blankets, firewood and other winter material only to be met with many more new families, people we had not seen or planned to visit, grabbing us from our hands and telling us to come take a look at where they live. It was overwhelmingly sad, and over our capacity or what we had prepared to cover. After all, we had only collected 1,615$ through our crowd-funding campaign: a very little amount to be able to cover all the Winter needs of displaced Syrians at the Turkish/Syrian border.

We did a little but felt good about the fact that several displaced Syrian families will have what they need to be warm until the end of the winter. There was however something shattering and emotionally hard to digest and that is the reality of all these families and their future vocations. What is to happen to them after the winter? How long will they be staying in these crude lands? When and how will they move to a safer haven? What if not much aid is coming their way? And is relying on aid, rather than self-reliance, the best that we could hope for thousands and thousand of displaced Syrians? Let alone the many children that are left without education.

So much to consider and think about… but perhaps what is more positive to end the note with is the solidarity and the bonds that we form during our trips: the simple fact that Syrians and non-Syrians are working together and helping each other is a hopeful sign that we must embrace.

The first time I saw this, I was right there with the little girl. I felt scared with her. This may be a "commercial", but the sad thing is...this is the reality of a lot of people (not just kids) in this world right now. Just let that sink in for a second. Save the Children
