COVID-19 and the media and culture sector

The ILO has published a brief on the impact of COVID-19 on the media and culture sector.

This brief analyses how different contract types and occupations create challenges in accessing social protection, health & safety, and economic relief programmes.

It also offers policy options to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic on the sector.

This brief highlights the impact of COVID-19 on the media and culture sector, hit hard by unemployment and closed productions. It analyses how the sector’s diversity in terms of contract types and occupations creates challenges in accessing social protection, safety and health, and economic relief...

Italy bans hand luggage on flights 'for health reasons'

👎 While the live music sector is desperately trying to return to work, Italian authorities make it impossible to carry a music instrument onboard planes. Violins, cellos, guitars etc. have 99% chances to be irremediably damaged when put in the hold.

Italian authorities have announced that hand luggage is banned on all national and international flights as of Friday June 26th.

Fair Internet partners support the Trilogue deal

Fair Internet partners urge the EU Council and the Parliament to give their final approval to the compromise agreement reached at trilogue on the draft Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market. Chapter III of this Directive includes provisions that constitute an encouraging step in the right direction, as they seek to increase transparency on contractual relations and level up the remuneration initially agreed, often little more than symbolic, with subsequent revenues.

According to a recent YouGov poll, 81% of UK consumers believe that session musicians should get a share of streaming royalties. They currently receive zero. 83% of UK consumers also think that record labels are paid too much. Half of those who expressed a different opinion were ready to pay more if their subscription went directly to the artists and songwriters they listen to.

Epidemic Sound: these unfair practices have to stop!
Mai Khoi used to be a famous and beloved pop star in Vietnam. After nominating herself for the National Assembly in 2016, she has been threatened, detained and prosecuted by the government. She refuses to let her voice be silenced, and keeps touring the world to perform, sing and speak her mind. Norwegian artist Moddi has through his Unsongs project focused on artistic freedom by recording 12 banned songs from 12 countries, and has been busy touring with this material since 2016. Artistic freedom is a basic human right, but it is a right that is not afforded to all of us. In Norway, most artists can enjoy this right and this freedom, but in countless other places artists are censored, imprisoned, threatened and even killed. During the next five months SafeMUSE will release a series of mini-documentaries that portraits the meeting between established Norwegian artists and threatened and persecuted colleagues from around the world . First video is out now, and we mark the end of the series by celebrating Music Freedom Day, March 3rd 2019. Go to www.safeseries.no to watch the full video.
