Discover Czech museums during one of the 40 conference excursions:
The Čáslav Municipal Museum and Library (Městské muzeum Čáslav) is one of the oldest regional museums in the Czech Republic. The museum was established on the basis of two different collections: a natural science collection from a private collector and local intellectual and patron, and the archeological collection from the museum association called „Včela Čáslavská" (Bee of Čáslav) 😊.

Today, this museum provides a unique view of museum work and the protection of collections in the 19th century. The furniture and other equipment of this museum has even been established as an official Cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 2018.

Visit the Čáslav Municipal Museum and Library during #ICOMPrague2022, perhaps during one of the 40 excursions.

Czech culture has always been resilient. In 1851, the Society for the Establishment of a Czech National Theatre in Prague made its first public appeal to begin collections. The proceeds facilitated the construction of a beautiful new building featuring works by the greatest Czech artists of the 19th century. The National Theatre, a symbol of national identify and independence, was opened on 11 June 1881 with the world premiere of Libuše, an opera specially composed for the event by Bedřich Smetanaone of the greatest composers of his day. Unfortunately, only a few weeks after the grand opening, part of the theatre was destroyed when a fire broke out during the completion of finishing touches. The fire was considered a national disaster, and inspired the public to gather new collections. Reconstruction work took nearly two years, but the second grand opening was able to take place in 1883 with Libuše again.

This example of resilience and determination reminded us of how museums have risen to the challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. Come to #ICOMPrague 2022 to discuss the resilience of museums in the 21st century… and don’t forget to see the glorious National Theatre in Prague.

by Masum Momaya

"Why did they leave the places they came from? What have their experiences been since then? How did their day-to-day lives in Greece look like? And what were their goals and hopes for the future? Most of the questions and responses had followed this trajectory of inquiry, until one of my colleagues probed in a hopeful tone: 'Would you like to go to a museum?'."

A Bit Of History

ICOM, which has retained its original English acronym for half a century, was the brainchild of an American, Chauncey J. Hamlin, President of the Trustees of the Science Museum in Buffalo.

This is how Hamlin remembered the circumstances in which the adventure began: "In 1945, when I met Georges Salles, who was then Director of French museums, I suggested to him that we set up an International Council of Museums. He was immediately enthusiastic and agreed to sign a circular inviting the world's most eminent museologists to an international meeting at the Louvre in November 1946. His backing helped me to secure the support of the Director of the British Museum in London."

Following the General Conference that was held in Italy in 1953, Salles succeeded Chauncey J. Hamlin, and became the second President of ICOM. He was part of a small group who, at the start of the Second World War, were convinced of the need to create and develop cooperation between the world's museums. During his three year mandate, Salles pursued two goals: ICOM was to serve the museum institution and profession and ICOM was to constantly adapt to the changing face of museums. More than half a century later, the organisation remains faithful to this spiritual heritage.
