Tight in our hearts..
#nawalelsaadawi
With deep sadness we received the news of Dr. Nawal El Sadaawi's passing on the first day of the spring 2021.
Nawal was a beloved and admired role model for us. Her life dedication to the freedom and dignity of Egyptian women, of all women, made her one of the strongest feminist voices in the region, and in the world. She was brave to express her ideas, to defend her beliefs that were never compromised, and to take risks for her cause. For this, she had to overcome many challenges and pay with her very own freedom, but inone of which stopped her.

We had the great chance to know Nawal closely and to work with her throughout the last decade on the universality of women’s rights and gender equality. During the last years she was dealing with youth launching the bases for the continuation of her fight for freedom and democracy, always the same lively eyes, the same shining white hair and splendid smile.

EuroMed Feminist Initiative got together with Nawal to Skopje in 2009 to celebrate Women's Civil Initiative ANTICO 10th anniversary and discuss Peace and Security – Feminist Alternative, which led to launching in December 2010 in Cairo the Global Conference “Women and the 21st Century - Feminist Alternatives”. Nawal first words addressing the conference that gathered over 150 people from all over the world were: “Today we live in a world, dominated by a privileged minority, using patriarchal, military, neo-liberal, neo–colonial and religion-based systems to oppress the disadvantaged majority in private and public spheres.” Then the conversation continued in Beirut, Gothenburg, Paris.. She never gave up. We will never forget her, never give up the same fighting road for gender equality and universality of women’s rights, and will keep her tight in our hearts.

**Egypt increased the penalties female ge***al mutilation (FGM), to be from 5 to 20 years in prison, announced on Wednesday evening, 20th January 2021.**

A statement by the Egyptian Cabinet said that it approved a draft law amending some provisions of the Penal Code promulgated by Law No. 58 of 1937, to establish a deterrent punishment for crimes of female ge***al mutilation (FGM).

The amendment to Article 242 stipulates that “anyone who performs FGM of a female by removing part of her ge***als, or modifying, mutilating, or inflicting injuries to these organs shall be punished with imprisonment for a period of no less than five years.”

According to the text of the same amendment: "If that act results in a permanent disability, the penalty is temporary hard labor, for a period of no less than 7 years. If the act leads to death, then the punishment is temporary hard labor, for a period of not less than 10 years." And the penalty shall be temporary hard labor if the person who performed the FGM was a doctor or practicing the profession of nursing.

“If his crime resulted in a permanent disability, the penalty shall be temporary hard labor for a period of no less than 10 years. But if the act leads to death, the penalty shall be temporary hard labor, for a period of not less than 15 years. Not more than 20 years old. "

In contrast to the aforementioned penalties, the court shall order the removal of the perpetrator from his government position for a period not exceeding 5 years if the crime was committed because of or due to the performance of his job, and the denial of the perpetrator from practicing the profession for a similar period, and the closure of the private facility in which the FGM was performed. The judgment will also be published in two widely circulated daily newspapers and on websites designated by the judgment at the expense of the convicted person, according to the amendment text.

In addition, the amendment specifies prison sentences for anyone who "requests FGM and has been circumcised at his request ... also punishes anyone who promotes, encourages, or advocates in any way to commit the crime of FGM, even if his act has no effect."

Prior to this amendment, the penalty for FGM was imprisonment for a period of no less than 5 years and not exceeding 7 years, according to the amendment made in 2016. The punishment before 2016 was imprisonment for a period of not less than three months and not exceeding two years, or a fine of not less than one thousand pounds and not exceeding 5,000 pounds (EP).

EuroMed Feminist Initiative welcomes this decision and at the same time reiterates the words of the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet: “Evidence shows that the certainty of punishment, rather than its severity, deters crime.”

Combating FGM was identified among the national priorities in Egypt under the regional campaign on Zero Tolerance for #VAWG (2019-2021), implemented by EuroMed Feminist Initiative in consortium with 9 member and partners organizations from the South Mediterranean and supported by the #EU.

Bonjour . Bien Cordialement,

Hey, I am currently working on a series of articles on how feminism is changing. My first article is on the use of hashtags and social media. The recent widespread of the #MeToo movement demonstrated how social media became a vital tool for feminism. It is showing how women from all across the world are facing the same issues when it comes to sexual assaults and harassment. I am interested in your opinion on that :-)
Sweden is among the global gender equality elite. So, what is left to do? Quite a lot, in fact. Women are still subjected to sexual violence, receive low pensions and suffer ill health because of stress. Join us for a year-long trip around one of the best countries to be a woman. We have followed some of the key issues over the course of a year.
