With the release of Kessler, designer Alaric Garnier achieves a contemporary take on inscriptional serifs. Quirks meet pleasantries throughout the character set, while delivering highly readable, optimistic text settings. Classicism comes through in the forms of the lowercase a and g, and tradition is upheld in its slightly-more-condensed italic. But Kessler is never dull; it takes liberties with every r, and sparkles across the page.

There is plenty of personality in Kessler display, and its text is substantive. For a fine serif typeface, it is remarkably sturdy, with a rich typographic color that encourages reading. Its italic swoops through like an Austen plot — smooth and assuming, with charming character.

Kessler is right at home titling delicate recipes, chapter titles, and lifestyle publications. Paired with striking photos creates new, dynamic juxtapositions — its DNA is editorial, through and through: expressive, communicative, engaging, and whimsical.

New release! Proto Slab Condensed, the latest extension to the Proto pattern.

New release! Proto Slab Condensed, the latest extension to the Proto pattern.

After Proto Grotesk, Mono and Slab, discover the new development in the Proto series: Proto Slab Condensed.

Dense & condensed, this new expansion of the Proto series packs more in less space. Proto Slab Condensed digs deepers into the realm of the “Proto” pattern that was initiated in 2014. This latest development explores the “dark corners” of slab typefaces, by blending multiples influences of the early 20th century.

In Proto Slab Condensed, the weights do not mathematically match those of the regular Proto Slab. So that, if you play mix & match with other members of the family (like Grotesk, Mono or Slab), the result is a more harmonious fit. Counter intuitive? Yes, but it works.

Proto Slab Condensed fits the same firepower in less space, but is not just a linear variant. See the richness of letter shapes we have packed in there, by exploring the PDF specimen.

→ Buy Proto Slab Condensed from €70. Family of 5 styles from €295.

Steadfast and peculiar: Proto Grotesk Cyrillic and Greek retain the personality of their parent shapes, whilst adding the distinctive script traits to the mix. Proto was never designed as a linear system of weights, but instead each has its own design details. These new script extensions respect this idea and offer rustic and mechanical shapes.
Cyrillic design by Ilya Ruderman and Yury Ostromentsky.
Greek design by Emilios Theofanous.

💎 Proto Grotesk Cyrillic 💎 New release 💎
We are happy to announce that today we are co-releasing this legendary Production Type font with a new Cyrillic by CSTM Fonts!
Here is how our friends describe the idea and story behind Proto:
"Over the last hundred years or so, utilitarian typefaces have shed most of their quirks and eccentricities on the way to becoming more versatile and universal. That makes some sense, but there’s no reason type can’t be both steadfast and peculiar. Drawing from an early German sans serif used for catalog text, Proto Grotesk revives an era when clunkiness was a virtue. Its pedigree is varied, vacillating between Egyptian and Modern, round and edged, even sans and slab. Despite these contradictions, its posture is nothing less than sturdy and forthright. Proto Grotesk is strange but steady."

Grotesk Mono is an exploration of the Proto pattern into the fixed-width realm, immobilizing some more radical traits of the “Proto” series. This voluntarily restrained family (four styles) distills a rough-edged aesthetic that’s rustic and dry. Proto Grotesk Mono develops an administrative look that sobers up the strangeness of regular Proto styles, through prominent features such as squared dots, seriffed “l”, “i”, “f” and “r”. The texture of Proto Grotesk Mono strikes one as straightened, almost machine-like, creating an matchless mood, the kind of mood that a drawing machine could achieve. As mechanical as Proto Grotesk was, Proto Grotesk Mono looks and feels more technical, and will be a cinch to calmly assert a sense of order, not without a reference to Sol LeWitt’s “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art” and his machine-becoming idea.

In Proto Grotesk Mono, the bureaucratic seriousness is balanced by relatively softer details, such as an oval structure instead of a traditionally circular one. Following the incursions of Production Type’s Minotaur into mechanized CAD aesthetics, Proto Mono is another step in alleviating the tension between the mechanical and the hand-drawn, between faceless systems and humane considerations.

PVC is a rambunctious display family that celebrates lively display faces of the ’70s and delivers some stunning hat-tricks: Banner, Promo & Menu.

While envisioning the Lab department of Production Type, the team was seeking innovative and audacious designs to set the tone for the new collection. As soon as we stumbled upon Hélène Marian’s body of work, it was a no-brainer: with a diverse mixture of editorial design, bespoke type design, and painted letterings Marian dug into her prolific archives to select some of her signature forms and gestures — extracting the DNA for the PVC family.

Bred from these numerous vernacular letterforms, PVC now consists in four super-varied styles, all of which share a hearty backbone while flaunting very different shapes :
• Banner is obsessed by filling the — horizontal — space: a store sign, rolling papers packaging, a truck tarp, drumsticks… You name it. Of course, Banner can also be stacked vertically and deliver a different rhythm. If this is not enough, the thicker Banner Ultra is even more radical and should do the work.
• Promo is here to promote your message, making sure that it will never be discounted! Compact yet bulky, Promo strives to be visible, even in tricky situations.
• Menu is Marian’s personal take on a typical French brush lettering style (which, decades ago, lead to the design of the notorious Antique Olive). Menu is conceived as the go-to style from the family, its sturdiness being efficient in most design cases.

PVC is not for the uninspired. Hélène Marian’s first retail release is venturesome, paving a path of possibilities for hierarchy, juxtaposition, and easy-to-mix styles, achieving the best from the family. Alternate letterforms and arrows bundled in each style make logos and headlines even more unique and lively. With such diverse styles, the possibilities are almost endless.
