Fellowships for Threatened Scholars: Call for Applications. Deadline: 23 March.

There are more threatened and displaced scholars today than ever before. The Institute of International Education (IIE)'s Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) can help.

IIE-SRF provides fellowships for professors, researchers, and public intellectuals who face threats to their lives and careers in their home countries. These year-long fellowships support temporary academic positions at institutions of higher learning anywhere in the world where IIE-SRF fellows can continue their work in safety.

In most cases, IIE-SRF fellows are eligible to apply for a second and final year of fellowship support.

Want a more elastic brain? Try mixing up your workout

According to a new study the brain derives substantial benefits from both high intensity interval training and longer, continuous bouts of moderate exercise. Cycling or running at full speed without mixing up the tempo may elevate the stress hormone, cortisol, blocking the positive effects.

Looking for an exercise regime that gives both the heart and brain the best workout? A new study from the University of South Australia may have the answer.

Great 3D data visualization by the Allen Institute!

To understand the brain, we must understand what it’s made of — its cells. Our researchers studied the electrical, morphological, and transcriptomic properties of over 3,700 neurons using the Patch-seq method to learn more. #bigscience

“Mini Brains” Are Not like the Real Thing

In a paper published on January 29 in Nature, Kriegstein and his colleagues identified which genes were active in 235,000 cells extracted from 37 different organoids and compared them with 189,000 cells from normally developing brains.
What they found is that these organoids—at times called “mini brains,” to the chagrin of some scientists—are not a fully accurate representation of normal developmental processes.

Transylvanian Experimental Neuroscience Summer School (TENSS)

Applications for the 9th edition of the IBRO supported Transylvanian Experimental Neuroscience Summer School (TENSS) are open now!

TENSS concentrates top-level international expertise to teach a dozen students techniques and concepts in experimental systems neuroscience. With a focus on modern optical and electrophysiological methods, students have the opportunity to study the connectivity and function of neuronal circuits.

The course is designed to be intensive and highly interactive, including both lab sessions and theoretical lectures. Coursework will take place in a land of myth and legend, beyond large forests (Transylvania), on the shores of a picturesque natural reserve called Pike Lake. Applications are welcome from interested (and interesting) graduate students and postdocs.

Alzheimer's memory loss reversed by new head device using electromagnetic waves - Neuroscience News

A new, non-invasive brain stimulation treatment shows promise in enhancing memories and cognitive function in those with Alzheimer’s disease. Transcranial electromagnetic treatment (TEMT) increases functional connectivity within the cingulate cortex. TEMT is also able to penetrate the brain to break up amyloid-beta and tau deposits, slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
