One of the most awaited exhibitions of 2021!

“A Year in Normandy”, David Hockney at the Musée de l’Orangerie from October 13, 2021 to February 14, 2022.

Confined to his house in Normandy during the covid-19 lockdown, David Hockney created a frieze painted on an iPad, measuring eighty meters in length and depicting the unchanging renewal of nature.

Chaim Soutine, the 10th child of a Jewish tailor, was born near Minsk in 1893, studied in Vilnius, and made his way to Paris in 1913. His period of greatest productivity was during the early 1920s.

Willem de Kooning was born in Rotterdam in 1904, and after apprenticing at an interior decorating business and taking art lessons, stowed away in a U.S.-bound ship. He spent many years in jobs that included store display and theater scenery and did not really start to concentrate on his art until the late 1930s. Following World War II, he emerged as one of the creators of abstract expressionism, a style that expressed American confidence & dominance.

The newest exhibit @museeorangerie highlights the incredible visual dialogue between these exceptional artists.

What are “fritillaries”? Fritillaries are bulbs which, like tulips, flower in the springtime.

From March 1886 to February 1888 van Gogh lived with his brother Theo in Paris.

Theo wrote to their mother…

“He is mainly painting flowers—with the object to put a more lively colour into his next set of pictures. He is also more cheerful than in the past and people here like him. To give you proof: hardly a day passes that he is not asked to go to the studios of well-known painters, or they come to see him. He also has acquaintances who give him a bunch of flowers every week which may serve him as models.”

In 1895, Gauguin left France for good. Tahiti was his first stop, then onward to the Marquesas Islands where he died in 1903.

His final years were fruitful despite failures and illness. He produced almost 100 paintings.

“The White Horse” depicts two n**e horsemen surrounded by luxurious vegetation. The Tahitian pharmacist who commissioned this painting refused to pay for it on the grounds the white horse… is green.

Meet Spotlight Member -Karen O’Haire

Here she is in 2019 on a painting trip in the footsteps of Cezanne and VanGogh.

We asked Karen why she joined the American Friends Musee d’Orsay…

“While on a painting trip in Nice in June 2019, I read an ad in the New York Times for the American Friends of the Musee D’Orsay Weekend Gala featuring work of Degas. I was excited to learn of an American organization that had a mission to raise public awareness and support for two of my favorite museums. I attended the event and all the activities were phenomenal: intimate tours of the D’Orsay’s new post-impressionists’ gallery with President Laurence des Cars, the Paris Opera House, the Dior archives, the Fonderie Susse and the evening access to the “Degas at the Opera” exhibit and dinner in the Musee D’Orsay. The staff and other members graciously welcomed me to the events.”

Wow!!

“Evolution” - by Piet Mondrian consists of 3 rectangular panels, juxtaposed to form a triptych. The central panel is slightly raised with respect to those on either side, which has been interpreted as a sign of its greater importance. The painting represents three fundamental stages in the spiritual evolution of a human being.

The work is to be read starting with the panel on the left and continuing with the one on the right before finishing off with the one in the middle.
