Platelet-rich plasma and its utility in medical dermatology: A systematic review

The field of dermatology has seen numerous therapeutic innovations in the past decade with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), recently garnering significant interest in alopecia, acne scarring, and skin rejuvenation. In other conditions of dermatology, such as chronic wounds and vitiligo, PRP has been investigated but has received less attention. The objective of this literature review was to focus on conditions of medical dermatology and to consolidate the available evidence on PRP for the practicing dermatologist.

Supporting underrepresented minority women in academic dermatology

The lack of under-represented minorities in medicine (UIM) in dermatology has been well-established, but the challenges faced by UIM women in dermatology have not yet been explored. UIM women belong simultaneously to more than one underrepresented group, and therefore face complex challenges common to women and to underrepresented minorities.

Dermatologic conditions in women receiving systemic cancer therapy

As advances in cancer therapies have improved cancer-related survival, novel therapeutics have also introduced a variety of dermatologic toxicities, and an increased number of patients are living with these sequalae. Women with cancer in particular experience a spectrum of dermatologic conditions affecting their skin, hair, nail and mucosal surfaces. Studies have shown that these toxic effects can significantly impact quality of life and alter a woman’s self-image, cultural identity, femininity, sexuality and mental health.

Commensal Staphylococci Influence Staphylococcus aureus Skin Colonization and Disease

Commensal organisms that constitute the skin microbiota play a pivotal role in the orchestration of cutaneous homeostasis and immune competence. This balance can be promptly offset by the expansion of the opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, which is responsible for the majority of bacterial skin infections.

Calcium release-activated calcium modulator 1 as a therapeutic target in allergic skin diseases

Allergic skin disease is the most common skin condition, and considerably affects patients' life quality because of its recurrence and pruritus. Numbers of studies point out that immune cells, including mast cells and T cells, play pathogenic roles in allergic skin diseases, and share similarities in the activation and secretion of cytokines.

Skin changes in the obese patient

Obesity is a worldwide major public health problem with an alarmingly increasing prevalence over the past 2 decades. The consequences of obesity in the skin are underestimated. In this paper, we review the effect of obesity on the skin, including how increased body mass index affects skin physiology, skin barrier, collagen structure, and wound healing.

Comparison of optical coherence tomography and high frequency ultrasound imaging in mice for the assessment of skin morphology and intradermal volumes

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS), two established imaging modalities in the field of dermatology, were evaluated and compared regarding their applicability for visualization of skin tissue morphology and quantification of murine intradermal structures. The accuracy and reproducibility of both methods were assessed ex vivo and in vivo using a standardized model for intradermal volumes based on injected soft tissue fillers.

The proportion of nevus-associated invasive melanoma differs with Breslow thickness: A cross-sectional study of 1087 cutaneous melanomas

Although most melanomas appear de novo, a third of cases are nevus-associated melanomas (NAMs).1 The proportion of NAMs appears to be slightly higher when the definition is based on information provided by the patient (42%-85%)2, 3 than when it is based on the histologic assessment (4%-72%).1, 2, 3, 4 One explanation for this discrepancy is the possibility of the tumor destroying the preexisting neval component, a phenomenon that is expected to be seen mostly in thick tumors and, perhaps, in nodular melanomas. The present study compared the proportion of NAMs in invasive melanomas based on tumor thickness.

Label-free stimulated Raman scattering microscopy visualizes changes in intracellular morphology during human epidermal keratinocyte differentiation

Epidermal keratinocyte (KC) differentiation, which involves the process from proliferation to cell death for shedding the outermost layer of skin, is crucial for the barrier function of skin. Therefore, in dermatology, it is important to elucidate the epidermal KC differentiation process to evaluate the symptom level of diseases and skin conditions.
