We are very pleased with the support provided by Fistula Foundation over the past years and the resulting work that we have accomplished in Zimbabwe!

WAHA International - Women And Health Alliance is one of Fistula Foundation’s longest-standing partners. Since 2009, we have worked together on projects in 18 countries.

In 2013, WAHA approached us with a bold plan: they wanted to start Zimbabwe’s first fistula treatment program. Given our strong partnership with WAHA, we were eager to support their efforts. The country faced a dire maternal health situation, and WAHA was among the best positioned in the world to take action. Their staff was, and remains, highly experienced in treating obstetric fistula and setting up training programs in complex settings.

In many ways, WAHA’s work in Zimbabwe has been trailblazing. They were forced to start from scratch, establishing their own referral network with community-based organizations and forging agreements with local hospitals.

Today, WAHA remains the only fistula treatment provider in Zimbabwe. They have expanded to provide care in three hospitals, and their hard work to establish an outreach and referral network has paid off exponentially. In 2018, they plan to provide 200 fistula patients with comprehensive care. We are proud to support their vital work.

After over 3 years of providing health services to refugees in Greece, we are reminded of what it means to be #withrefugees.
A 34 year-old, Syrian woman said: ‘WAHA doesn’t treat us like refugees. They help me to forget about the war, and issues at home in Syria. They treat me like a person.’
Another woman from Iraq said: ‘If someone is sick, sometimes just speaking to WAHA makes us feel better! Sometimes just being treated well, decently, like a person can help you feel better physically, as well as psychologically.’

Upon the arrival of 13 buses from Eastern Ghouta, WAHA's Psychiatric team went directly to the evacuation point in Azaz where 650 displaced persons were received. WAHA provided psychological support for cases of depression, anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

WAHA collaborates with other organisations to ensure that families and individuals have the support they need in terms of shelter, food, as well as medical and first aid services. Winterization of temporary shelters was offered by WAHA to 50 displaced families in Harem districts in Idlib, which can be seen in the photos.

ASB Greece

This week Mr Olivier-Francois Schott from the Directorate-General for European Commission - Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid Operations - ECHO - ECHO visited Katsikas and Filippiada camps in Epirus region where ASB is providing site management support (SMS). Along with the Camp Managers, there was the chance to talk about the challenges that migrants and refugees are currently facing and discuss about how existing structures can best service their needs.

This year ECHO continues to provide support towards the project of ASB, ARSIS - Association for the Social Support of Youth and WAHA International - Women And Health Alliance, jointly addressing the pressing humanitarian needs in Greece, including shelter, primary health care, psycho-social support, improved hygiene conditions as well as informal education at the sites.

Bright Magazine's most recent piece captures the experience of WAHA psychiatrist, Roula Michati, working with Syrian refugees on the island of Chios, Greece. Have a read!

Seven years of the Syrian war, with no end in sight.

One year ago, we published this screenplay by Stav Dimitropoulos on a group therapy session for refugees, moderated by a psychiatrist who herself is a refugee. It was a beautiful, sensitive examination of the psychological—and often visceral—effects of war trauma.

TIME IS NOW: Bringing an End to Gender-Based Violence

Women and girls living in displacement camps are at increased risk for gender-based violence, including sexual violence, exploitation, intimate-partner violence, and child sexual abuse. WAHA International seeks to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) in camps in northern Iraq by providing individual consultations to survivors and con-ducting awareness raising sessions for women and girls, and men and boys about the various forms of GBV, the risks of early marriage, and the importance of the girls' education. In Dohuk, 185 women and girls and 48 men and boys attended sessions in late 2017. At the conclusion of every session, participants are given small reminders in the form of cups, mirrors, and pens adorned with the phrase "No Violence". By engaging men and boys as agents of change in bringing an end to GBV, we are encouraging broader transformations to achieve gender equality.

TIME IS NOW: Empowering Displaced Women and Girls

Language is a powerful tool for social reintegration and is critical to empowering dis-placed women and girls. WAHA works to protect the rights of refugee women and children in Turkey through collaboration with a local organization, The Relief Society for Syrian Refugees (SMDD). WAHA delivers psychological, referral, and legal ser-vices to survivors of gender-based violence, enhances child protection within schools, provides Turkish language courses, and facilitates access to basic social services. Over 100 refugee women, former students of the Turkish language courses, have found employment so far.

In Istanbul, WAHA is celebrating #IWD2018 with an event focused on inspiring wom-en's empowerment, where female guest speakers will share their successful inte-gration stories, including a Syrian woman who recently opened her own beauty salon. Psychologists and lawyers will also be present to answer questions and inform on WAHA's services.
