This time around, Gempaknya carnival featured an interesting line-up of social enterprise and creative collective, to give more exposure to the residents of this PPR. There was also brand content crafted creatively and activities organized by the community themselves.

Celebrating One World One Ocean !

A CSR (Corporate, Social Responsibility) programme to educate primary school children about ocean awareness by Technip Malaysia at SK Ulu Lumagar in Bongawan , near Papar, Sabah . Bongawan is a small rural estate said to have been developed in the 1900s & located roughly 70km from Kota Kinabalu. Today's Ocean Art Day is supported by Technip Malaysia's as part of its 3-year social project commitment in this rural school.

In a school comprising 85 students, some of which had to walk as long as 2 hours on gravel roads daily, this was a fun-filled, educational & rewarding day which allows them to express themselves through various activities:

1) Story-telling by John Ung (a children's book author and diver) based on the book 'Paradise Reef' (published by MPH Bookstore )
2) Reading & English-learning session
3) Art jamming, clay art, t-shirt painting & giant mural painting
4) Ocean prop-making and drama contest.

The teachers too had an opportunity to paint murals of marine life with local Sabah, Malaysia artists group CrackoArtGroup , represented by Phey Lsw , Cracko Blabak and Nofie J Uddin .

As part of the effort to increase the English language proficiency of the students, each murals are also drawn with tropical reef creatures tagged with names

Thanks to En. Romzi (chief coordinator), En. Johari (art teacher) and En. Daipin, the representative head of the school for their efforts, all the students and other teachers now have a memorable creative day to share with their families and friends around the villages surrounding Ulu Lumagar.

In the opening speech, the artist Rafiee spoke about his inspiration drawn from his long time fascination with a few North-western Africa countries ( Morocco , Algeria & Tunisia ), the life/ changes in lives that goes on there and his artistic idols ( Henri Matisse & Paul Klee ) who worked in these countries at some point in their career.

As someone who only recently started to follow Rafiee's work, what I see is crazy colors which I'm always drawn to, and a rich source of imagination to a place that I can only mentally associate with some romantic medieval architecture and beautiful looking people who don't look typically African (I'm never good in general knowledge). So ya, looking at this new batch of artwork was an new discovery and a feast to my mind.

Here is what you could say a photo diary of Rafiee's, another way of seeing the paradigm through his eyes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP-YIqkDvi8

The first solo street art exhibition in Klang Valley is finally here - https://www.facebook.com/events/438687846234750/.

Curated by artist Escape Va himself, and in collaboration with KEDAI , a newly opened charming art space for emerging artists (started by ex advertising executive Rizal).

The approximately 600 sqft open space was filled with unique artworks and installations that's pretty mind-blowing, and you know immediately this is something kind of new age. Everything was raw-street-feel except the 5 master pieces which was Escape's newest production and clearly set apart from his older works. The new works had fine details compared to his usual street work but it stay true to his roots in terms of medium used and graffiti art elements. It was really pleasurable to witness this evolution of style. The drawing's 'spill over' from the canvas to the wall was beautifully done. I hope someone, somewhere can gets this wall installed in their home or office!

The show opening was no less a spectacle when lights was turned off save a few UV fluorescent lights, illuminating the magical glow-in-the-dark effect of the paintings. So this was our earth hour celebration in a way.

There was also a wonderfully put together video capturing the whole production process of the exhibition (http://vimeo.com/90398523 ) , a dance performance using lights and an a acoustic performance.

Other videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BTAvAeFXnI , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBrC3MDgQoU

This is a not-to-missed-street-art-levels-up exhibition and it will be on till 11 April.

CNY super mashup art with UM Architectural students (Zee, Huda, Diba, Mai, Dayana) in collaboration with XO Leong.

Super mashup art project.

Super mashup art project.

What happens when you mix up modern art and traditional Chinese calligraphy? What about mixing up all kind of art medium, like paint, items, origami, structures? How about people from different background and even nationalities coming together to produce the most mixed up art piece? Will the results be confusing or delighting?

Inspired by our beloved country Malaysia, where all things are very 'mixed', a group of former and current UM architecture students (Huda, Zee, Mai, Mustakim, Dayana and Diba) and a The One Academy student cm street artist XO Leong came together to work on an art project that churned out 22 horse themed artwork for Chinese New Year celebration.

The team learned a lot about working as a one team, exploring outside the box and use of unconventional medium other than paint.

We wish everyone a very happy Chinese New Year!

Young, creative and passionate.

A Doodle wall art activity took place in KL's hip and urban inspired hotel, The Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral. The hotel played an active role by reaching out out socially to the young generation and giving them opportunities to spread their creative talents. Character designer & established artist, Orkibal Labikro leads this activity doodling his gregarious characters on walls at the staff area. Few students from SMK Taman Melawati, SMK Cheras Jaya and SMK Kota Damansara 10 joined in the fun & had a blast bringing life to the walls. We hope there will be more of such programmes that corporations/institutions can adopt to nurture/inspire the young talents like what Aloft Kuala Lumpur did today. #urbanartcentral #aloftkls

A wonderful project with a touching story to tell.

A month-long project was undertaken by Bombardier Transportation Malaysia, in collaboration with illustration/ character designer Orkibal, young architect Lo Chang Yong (his page - https://www.facebook.com/archix.org) , the year 1 students of University Malaya architecture faculty, The One Academy art & design college student Leong Sheng Yung, the residents committee of PPR Kerinchi & the Gempaknya My Community team headed by Mustakim Ismail. The main mission is to beautify the multi-purpose hall at block D of the fla, and build a 'play & learn' corner that will make a learning environment that is more fun and colorful for the children & adults of PPR Kerinchi.

This beautifully done up community center was unveiled on the 30th Nov 2013, in conjunction with the Pesta Gempaknya My Community (festival) event along with other community driven activities. Mr. Kamal Habibullah, Bombardier Head of Operations officially handed over the place to the chairman of PPR Kerinchi residents committee, Mr. Rahim Ahmad and presented a token of appreciation to all the contributors, including a pair of siblings from the community, Najihah (10) & Sulaiman (7) who bursting with energy helped out a lot during the preparation process (photos here - http://on.fb.me/1eDvIZR ).

The 'Play & Learn corner' of PPR Kerinchi is now filled with books from public donations, furniture made of recycled materials like fibreboard pallets and tyres, DIY shelves converted from traditional cabinets, educational toys/games and murals. This place was formerly used for wedding preparations and as an operation centre for major events. With the newly revamped place, it has become a hangout & learning place for the people, especially children. And yes, the children and even adults are thrilled to chill here.

Bombardier Transportation also took the opportunity to launch a drawing & colouring contest for the primary and secondary school students of the community with the theme 'Train of the Future' as part of the social, corporate responsibility. The contestants submitted various innovative drawings that caught their imagination of how a train would look like in the future. The winners not only won attractive prizes and book vouchers, but also an opportunity to have their artwork featured in Bombardier's 2014 calender.

A campus event that promotes visual art.

After 3 months of contest-promoting at campus, collecting entries & behind-the-scene judging, this campaign finally comes to a sweet end, where all the qualified participants, their campus representatives, the media, the organizer Petron Malaysia and representatives of Balai Seni Visual Negara (BVSN), gathered at the prestigious national art institution's venue to mark a successful closing to the event.

The highlight of the event, of course, was to unveil the winners for both the art painting and photography categories. The winners walked away with fantastic prizes which will hopefully motivate them to excel further in their craft. They will also enjoy media exposure to give them a head-start before venturing out into the working world. Out of 190+ entries, 40 were chosen to be exhibited and honored for their excellence.

Petron Malaysia's employees were also given a chance to take part in this competition along with the campus students. 5 of the finalists were good quality entries from their employees.

Campuses that were present were Malaysian Institute of Art , The One Academy , Saito College , International Islamic University Malaysia , SEGi University , Taylor's University , Open University Malaysia , KDU College Penang Campus and Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) .

Top 6 entries from each category will be featured in Petron Malaysia's 2014 calender. What an honor for the winners!

This event was also a great inter-campus mingling session where lecturers and students got to know their peers in the industry better.

Petron Malaysia aims to get more entries next year by reaching out to more campuses.

The Director General of BVSN, En. Haned Masjak, applauded Petron Malaysia for playing a part in one of the important nation-building agenda, which is to cultivate a creative culture and economy. They were happy to support this initiative.

One sure way to add more joy to a school that is filled with creativity and outspoken students is through colors, snacks and laughter.

The Joy School project was initiated by Mondelez International and supported by the Malaysian Institute of Art, graffiti artists (Kenji Chai, Anokayer & Nestwo), character designer Orkibal, art educator Syahidah, and of course most importantly the active participation of the school - Pn. Nasran (HM) who fully supports programs that involves her students for the good, Pn Norhayani (art teacher) who loves to decorate her school and the PMR students (50 students participated) who did most of the work.

Joy comes with hard work of course. 3 groups of students worked on 3 separate walls all day long despite the intermittent rain in the afternoon, 1 group of students painted canvas art for every classroom, 1 group of students design photo props for their fellow school mates to pose with and 1 group of students tended to the snack counter. Their dedication made sure that all Melawatians gets to enjoy beautiful art in every corner after the day was over. Very impressive for some 15 year old-s.

Mondelez International (https://www.facebook.com/mondelezinternational) made sure that there were enough snacks especially the yummy Oreos and Chipsters (a hit with students) to keep the whole school happy for everyone throughout this day-long program and the sweet journey is documented through photos / video.

Now, isn't SMK Tmn SMK TAMAN MELAWATI the most exciting school in town?
