It's #FreeFriday!

Today we are pleased to feature "Twentieth-Century Building Materials: History and Conservation," available for the first time as a free PDF download: https://gty.art/2U04r43

First published in 1995 and reissued by the GCI in 2014, this invaluable guide addresses the lack of technical information about the products used in twentieth-century buildings. Thirty-seven essays written by leading experts offer insights into the history, manufacturing processes, and uses of a wide range of materials, including glass block, aluminum, plywood, linoleum, and gypsum board. Readers will also learn about how these materials perform over time and discover valuable conservation and repair techniques. Bibliographies and sources for further research complete the volume.

Heritage in Danger- National Hotel!
It seems that the demolition and replacement of the National Hotel with another building is advancing without considering the BACU Association's referrals to save this iconic edifice for Chisinau. The dismantling of the National Hotel, as requested by the current owners, will irrecoverably disfigure the United Nations Square from an urbanistic point of view, changing its authentic character specific to architecture and post-war urban planning of the Republic of Moldova!

Gottfried Böhm obituary

Completed in 1968 and regarded as his most important work, the Neviges pilgrimage church was the result of a competition, for which Böhm submitted an unearthly crystalline model. It was a fragmented cluster of angular forms, more meteorite than maquette, like something sent down from planet Krypton.

Meet the people who collect modernist houses

Despite it being a century old, modernism’s pioneering houses still represent an archetype of civilised living. Architects’ attempts to produce interiors that segue into the landscape or revel in the minimal means of industrial materials — unfinished, raw and real — still evoke the thrill of living at the sharp end of the avant-garde.

Just as some wealthy people collect cars, others amass architecture purely for their own pleasure

#RecordandoPatrimonio

HERITAGE IN DANGER
Kamalapur Railway Station
By Daniel Dunham and Robert Boughey, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 1961-1968

The Kamalapur Railway Station, designed by Daniel Dunham and Robert Boughey for Berger Consulting between 1961 and 1968 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is threatened due to the an extension plan of the Dhaka Metro Rail’s Line-6 that includes its demolition and replacement by a new infrastructure, rather than its adaptation. Similarly to the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (IIMA), by Louis Kahn in India, the Kamalapur Railway station is a masterpiece of the Modern Movement in South Asia threatened by the government’s action.

“The Kamalapur Railway Station has stood east of the city’s Motijheel district since 1968, when New Jersey-based Berger Consultants completed design and construction work on its thin concrete shell umbrella. It has since become something of a local icon, with many prominent Bangladeshi architects considering it an invaluable piece of cultural heritage. But with an expansion of Dhaka’s metro lines now imminent, Kamalapur is facing the threat of demolition.

It is often framed as part of the so-called “golden age” of modern architecture in Bangladesh. Even if Kamalapur Station is certainly not the only notable example of modern architecture in Bangladesh, though, it is likely one of the most accessible. (…) With a patchwork of signage and posters now dotting the building’s discolored surfaces, Kamalapur has assumed a character that some consider inimitable - a notion that has only made the demolition announcement more difficult to accept.
Plans have already been approved by Railways Minister, and the demolition will purportedly allow the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority to use the site of Kamalapur to build a new effective multimodal hub. This decision is now raising critics from local and international architects, referring it “as an unnecessary act of destruction, reflecting misplaced priorities and insufficient coordination between agencies” and “focused on the potential for adaptive reuse rather than demolition.”

Aware of the imminent risk that Kamalapur Railway Station is facing, Docomomo International is determined in raise attention to stop the plans and preserve this masterpiece.

Informations générales

Through its 90 national committees and 28 International Scientific Committees, ICOMOS can engage a wide range of participants in the promotion and protection of the heritage places of the Twentieth-century. ISC200C considers that it is the mid to late Twentieth-century places that are most at risk, through lack of recognition, conservation and celebration and co-ordinates a range of projects, conferences, declarations and publications to address these issues.
