#RecordandoPatrimonio

HERITAGE IN DANGER
Kamalapur Railway Station
By Daniel Dunham and Robert Boughey, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 1961-1968

The Kamalapur Railway Station, designed by Daniel Dunham and Robert Boughey for Berger Consulting between 1961 and 1968 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is threatened due to the an extension plan of the Dhaka Metro Rail’s Line-6 that includes its demolition and replacement by a new infrastructure, rather than its adaptation. Similarly to the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (IIMA), by Louis Kahn in India, the Kamalapur Railway station is a masterpiece of the Modern Movement in South Asia threatened by the government’s action.

“The Kamalapur Railway Station has stood east of the city’s Motijheel district since 1968, when New Jersey-based Berger Consultants completed design and construction work on its thin concrete shell umbrella. It has since become something of a local icon, with many prominent Bangladeshi architects considering it an invaluable piece of cultural heritage. But with an expansion of Dhaka’s metro lines now imminent, Kamalapur is facing the threat of demolition.

It is often framed as part of the so-called “golden age” of modern architecture in Bangladesh. Even if Kamalapur Station is certainly not the only notable example of modern architecture in Bangladesh, though, it is likely one of the most accessible. (…) With a patchwork of signage and posters now dotting the building’s discolored surfaces, Kamalapur has assumed a character that some consider inimitable - a notion that has only made the demolition announcement more difficult to accept.
Plans have already been approved by Railways Minister, and the demolition will purportedly allow the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority to use the site of Kamalapur to build a new effective multimodal hub. This decision is now raising critics from local and international architects, referring it “as an unnecessary act of destruction, reflecting misplaced priorities and insufficient coordination between agencies” and “focused on the potential for adaptive reuse rather than demolition.”

Aware of the imminent risk that Kamalapur Railway Station is facing, Docomomo International is determined in raise attention to stop the plans and preserve this masterpiece.

Heritage Alert!

The three pavilions were decorated with three murals with the theme "Ideology, Cosmos and Science". Two of them were partially destroyed by renovations undertaken in previous years. They were covered with thermal insulation materials, without taking into account their cultural heritage value.
On the first day of 2021, the page of the Technical University of Moldova (UTM) publicly announced the renovation of the third pavilion in the UTM complex, built in 1974 after a standard project of the KievNii Institute adapted by the architect B. Vaisben. The renovation seems to be happening without taking into account the request addressed by BACU Association to the management of UTM - Universitatea Tehnica a Moldovei in the summer of 2020, requesting that the renovation takes place without destroying the monumental art work of the last pavilion.

Heritage Alert!

On the first day of the 2021, was publicly anounced by the UTM page, the renovation of the third pavilion in the UTM complex, built in 1974 after the type project of the KievNii Institute, adapted by the architect B. Vaisben. The renovation seems to be happening without taking into account the request of the BACU Association from the summer of 2020 to the management of UTM - Universitatea Tehnica a Moldovei , through which B.A.C.U. requested the execution of the renovation works without destroying the monumental art works of the last pavilion.

site location:

http://socmonumentalart.com/item/cosmosul-si-politica-socialista-intruchipate-in-trei-picturi-murale-plasate-pe-fatadele-celor-trei-auditorii-similare-ale-universitatii-tehnice-din-moldova/

The three pavilions were decorated with three murals with the theme "Idiology, Cosmos and Science". Two of them were partially destroyed by renovations undertaken in previous years. Thus, the Soc Monumental Art works were covered with thermal insulation materials, without taking into account the value of the built cultural heritage. In February 2020, the listing request with no. 05 / 2-09 / 1490 - 06.03.2020 was submitted to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova/ Ministerul Educației, Culturii și Cercetării al Republicii Moldova for the inclusion in the list of historical monuments of the entire UTM complex together with the monumental murals of the mentioned pavilions. Also, the request for classification and inclusion in the list of historical monuments of local significance of the same UTM - Universitatea Tehnica a Moldovei Complex together with the monumental art works was submitted to the Chisinau City Hall, with the official request with no. 111/3950 of 30.06.20

Therefore, we would like to remind to the Ministerul Educației, Culturii și Cercetării al Republicii Moldova / the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research of the Republic of Moldova and the Primăria Municipiului Chișinău / City Hall of Chisinau to insist on the UTM - Universitatea Tehnica a Moldovei / UTM - Technical University of Moldova to stop the destruction of the monumental art works.

Fate of Tokyo's original capsule tower hangs in balance

There is some hope that the tower could be listed as a World Heritage Site, together with Daikanyama Hillside Terrace in Tokyo, designed by Fumihiko Maki, the Tokoen Hotel in Tottori Prefecture, designed by Kiyonori Kikutake, and other Metabolist buildings.

But the only way to save the building is to replace all the capsules, said Maeda. To do that, he is trying to raise funds from investors to buy both the land from CTB GK, which acquired the site in 2018, and the capsules that he and his supporters do not already own.

Threatened building is a monument to Japan's Metabolist architecture
