EBU / European Blind Union The voice of blind and partially sighted people in Europe. EBU is a non-governmental, non profit-making European organization founded in 1984.

One of the six regional bodies of the World Blind Union, it is the only organization representing the interests of blind and partially-sighted people in Europe.

Mission: EBU works towards an accessible and inclusive society with equal opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to fully participate in all aspects of social, economic, cultural and political life. With its large network of member organizations in 45 European countries, EBU brings together a wealth of expertise related to visual impairment and its implications on the daily lives of millions of Europeans with sight loss. EBU provides a platform for its member organizations for the exchange of information, cooperation and collective actions to promote the rights and needs of blind and partially sighted persons.

As part of EBU's Gender Equality Awareness Raising (GEAR) activity, our Austrian member (BSVÖ) held four on-line sessions (covid obliged!) in late 2020.
Overall there were nine participants in the 4 sessions. Two of the sessions were on-line discussions on the themes
How to put gender equality on the agenda in our organization, and Gender equality within organizations and good practices.
There were also two on-line training sessions on Communication, rhetoric and self-confidence for women.
Similar sessions will be held in other EBU member organisations shortly.

This year's First Prize winner is from Spain, María Jesús Cañamares Muñoz, who wrote a topical essay entitled 'Braille and Lockdown'.

On the occasion of White Cane Day 2020, and as our community, and society as a whole, struggles to come to terms with the pandemic, EBU endorses and approves the World Blind Union Statement, which includes the following call to law makers; "As the world grapples with the impact of COVID-19, we take this opportunity to remind law and policy makers and all stakeholders involved to ensure that designing or redesigning proper infrastructure adheres to COVID-19 protocols, that universal design is considered and everyone is sensitized. It is necessary for all of us to adjust to the "new normal" and in doing so, no one must be left behind."

EBU joined the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, European Disability Forum, European Network on Independent Living - ENIL, European Union of the Deaf, Inclusion Europe, Mental Health Europe along with other disability related NGOs, academics and civil society in the field of human rights to contribute to MEP Katrin Langensiepen’s draft report on equal treatment in employment. The draft report has several key suggestions to bring EU policy in line with the UNCRPD and to facilitate a more inclusive open labour market.

New EBU Position paper on MEDIA funding to European film industry: Promote Equal Access to Culture for Persons with Visual Impairments in the EU!
EBU appreciates that the European Union has supported the production and distribution of fiction and documentary projects for cinema and for television with around 2.6 billion € since 1991 through the MEDIA sub-programme.
Yet, funding under MEDIA supports films that fail to include blind and partially sighted persons.
