Of all the journals published by the United Nations and its specialised institutions, the UNESCO Courier has always occupied first place for the number of its readers and the range of its audience, said the American journalist Sandy Koffler, the Courier's founder and first editor-in-chief, in 1988. The magazine has changed a great deal over the years, both in content and in form. But it pursues its original mission: promote UNESCO’s ideals, maintain a platform for the dialogue between cultures and provide a forum for international debate. Available online since March 2006, the UNESCO Courier serves readers around the world in the six official languages of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) and in Portuguese. A limited number of issues are also produced in print.

Mission: Since its creation in 1948, the UNESCO Courier has been spreading an ideal throughout the world: humanity united in its diversity around universal values and fundamental rights, strong in the wealth of its cultures, knowledge and accomplishments.

Argentinian cartoonist Quino passed today aged 88. Joaquín Salvador Lavado, better known as Quino, won an international reputation with his Mafalda series, which shows the adult world as seen through the eyes of children. Its main character, an inquisitive girl who is always asking awkward questions and worries about world peace, has featured in ten books, which have been translated into over 20 languages and published in newspapers and magazines in many parts of the world.

Burnt out by the pressure of having to come up with new ideas every week, Quino decided to stop drawing Mafalda in 1973, and spend more time on other projects that give free rein to the caustic humour that has always been his hallmark. Meticulously executed in black and white and packed with telling details, his drawings focus on power relationships, social inequalities and environmental degradation. In short, on all kinds of issues that, as he readily admits, “have nothing funny about them.”

Today we bid farwell to possibly the greatest Latin American cartoonist of the 20th century. To pay tribute to his memory, we invite you to read this interview with Quino published in The Unesco Courier in 2000: https://on.unesco.org/36m5leS

#GenderBias is not acceptable - neither in the real nor the virtual. Yet, most virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa are female by default, reinforcing problematic gender stereotypes.

Beirut has withstood conflicts, unrest and social changes. But today, the heritage buildings in this resilient city are in danger.

Due to the explosions on 4 August, at least 60 heritage buildings may collapse without emergency interventions. These precious buildings are the witnesses of Lebanon’s rich histories and legacies, storytellers of the foregone eras. But heritage buildings are not merely “records.” They also invite us to evaluate what kind of heritage we want to leave for the future generations. In times of crisis, we need heritage more than ever. We need to protect our past to reimagine our future.

Hear what experts have to say about protecting these legacies of Lebanon’s rich history.

WWF Celebrates Conservation Success: World’s First 5-Country Biosphere Reserve Nominated to UNESCO. Decades of preparatory work has paved the way for the Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve (#MDD), Europe’s largest river protected area: 930,000 hectares of natural treasures between Austria and Serbia have been nominated to UNESCO for protection. For more than 20 years, WWF, EuroNatur and many local conservation partners in all five countries have been devoted to make this dream to achieve a better protection of the rivers’ natural values a reality. WWF Adria, WWF Austria and WWF Hungary, the ministries and nature protection authorities of Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia as well as #MAB (Man and the Biosphere) committees all participated in the preparation of the UNESCO nomination dossier. The backbone of the future #biosphere reserve is made up of #floodplains and #wetlands along the #river, which are protected under a chain of thirteen local protected areas. Last week’s nomination to UNESCO is a decisive milestone in the establishment of Europe’s largest protected river landscape which, until 1989, had been fragmented by the Iron Curtain. The so-called “Amazon of Europe” is home to Europe’s highest density of breeding white-tailed eagle, as well as endangered species such as the little tern, black stork, otters, beavers and #sturgeons. The MDD will be an international model region for nature conservation and sustainable regional development.
