Divest Walls and Wall Street Series: Panel One: Indigenous Women Call for Elbit Border Wall Divestment

Time: May 7th, 2021, 4 pm PST / 5 pm MST / 7 pm EST

Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ZXGvybBqRxyvq9Cp1-d7AA?fbclid=IwAR2zjwTsUuC9bblbhYbs01FYK4q7o34OCTOiDMFMgJltLDV8g9lgYm0lFao

Wall infrastructure and US imperialism must be central in climate justice and fossil fuel divestment movements! This series with expert panelists will educate our audience on how militarism, Walls, and Wall Infrastructure around the planet impact climate security, human rights, and Indigenous peoples' cultural survival. These panels demand divestment from the Wall and call for divestment movements to be intersectional in challenging imperialism, calling for demilitarization, anti-racism, and decolonization of Indigenous peoples' lands and territories. Join us as we #DivestTheWall and #DefundTheWall

Moderated by Michelle Cook (Dineh), founder of Divest, Invest, Protect.

Panelists:
Ophelia Rivas was born in Ali Jegk (Little Clearing) village in the Big Pond District (Gu-Vo) on O’odham lands located less than a quarter-mile from the United States/Mexico International boundary. O’odham land exists on both sides of the US /Mex. International Border. After years of working with the Ceremony and Traditional O’odham leaders, in 2003 I founded O’odham VOICE Against the WALL, a grassroots group to advocate O’odham Rights and Human Rights to maintain and protect ceremony and traditional O’odham lands and crossing on ancestral routes on the US/MX International border. After 9/11 O’odham lands became heavily militarized by the U.S. DHS armed forces. This armed military began a violent aggressive attack campaign on O’odham from both sides of the International border.
Will Parrish is an investigative journalist whose work focuses on militarism, policing, borders, and radical political struggles. He is also a Ph.D. student in History of Consciousness at the University of California Santa Cruz.
Dov Baum, Ph.D., is the director of Economic Activism for the AFSC – the American Friends Service Committee. She is a feminist activist, who co-founded Who Profits from the Occupation and the Coalition of Women for Peace in Israel, as well as the direct action group Black Laundry – Qu**rs Against the Occupation.

The award winning feature documentary film, Women Of The White Buffalo features the Lakota women living on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations in South Dakota.

The intention of this film is to shine a light on our Native sisters, to ensure that their voices are included in this current wave of global Women's empowerment, and to inspire the next generation of Native youth to utilize their own ancient wisdom in the much needed healing of their communities. For all viewers, this film is an opportunity to learn from this intensely beautiful and powerful culture about some of the forces that perpetuate racism, abuse, and inequality. As they say in Lakota, Mitákuye Oyás'in, “We are all related.”

Please keep an eye out on our social media platforms as we will be announcing the official world wide release date very soon!

Earth Day every day! 🌎 We honor Native/Indigenous women who have been in the fight against Big Oil, defending our right to clean water and breathable air. Joye Braun and Jasilyn Charger are two Lakota Winyánpi on the forefront protecting the land for all relations and future generations.

We thank Joye and Jasilyn for their service, and extend a warm Wópila to all the other land defenders out there battling the forces that oppress our shared mother. Earth is our only home, we need to protect it!

Today’s #MatriarchMonday is Sacheen Little Feather (White Mountain Apache and Yaqui), an actress and activist born Marie Cruz in Salinas, California. In 1973, Sacheen refused Marlon Brando’s Oscar for Best Actor at one of the most memorable protests in Academy Awards history. Marlon Brando invited Sacheen to decline his win for The Godfather, denouncing the stereotype of Indigenous people in film at the 45th Academy Awards.

The iconic speech was timely, as the Wounded Knee occupation had begun just a month before the award show aired. Sacheen was met with both claps and boos.

Today, Sacheen’s speech is still remembered for highlighting Hollywood’s poor treatment of Native nations, and helped break down barriers for Indigenous people in film. It took tremendous courage to do what she did, and we commend her for it!

Haƞkaṡi Tamaka Waṡtewiƞ has taken the path to be with her relatives that have gone on. The impact Haƞkaṡi Ladonna had on the staff, board and members of Indigenous Environmental Network cannot be understated. She inspired us all and sparked a global movement in defense of the sacredness of the Water of Life as she stood against Energy Transfer’s Dakota Access Pipeline. Ladonna was part of the group that founded the Sacred Stone Camp, located near her community, Cannonball, North Dakota on April 1, 2016. Ladonna was a Strong Heart Woman and her story will be told for generations to come. - Tom BK Goldtooth (Mato Awaƞyaƞkapi),

She will be remembered with great fondness and love by many. She encouraged people to learn and know their histories and where they came from igniting personal and spiritual growth for thousands. Her love of family was powerful as was her love for her people. A historian that brought stories to the forefront and made history relevant she also deeply loved the land and water. She will forever be a matriarch of the Water Protector movement and forever known for welcoming all to the land, water and stories of our people. -Joye Braun (Cheyenne River Sioux)

LaDonna was absolutely dedicated to the principles of protecting the sacred, even as the fight went global, she was very modest and humble about her mission. LaDonna understood that this fight is much bigger than any individual person; this fight is about protecting the sacredness of mother earth and the water is a collective struggle for all life on this planet.
-Dallas Goldtooth (Dine and Dakota)

She was soft-spoken yet firm and she spoke from the heart as a Mom simply trying to fight for her beautiful homelands she loved so much; making her relatable to so many. She would always tell people not to worry about her and that she would be ok; even when she was really sick. Although she has gone on to be with the ancestors her legacy lives on in the spark she ignited in the hearts of thousands in the protection of water and she will never be forgotten.
-Kandi White (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara)

“We’ve only just begun. I encourage everybody to continue to stand. There must be justice in this world, and there must be accountability. And I truly believe if we can have those two major components, we can change for a better system. We need a better system in America. We need a system that’s equal to everybody. And we need, as Native people, not to be invisible in our own homelands. We are only here to help. We are only here to teach you to love the land and the water.”
-LaDonna Brave Bull Allard (July 2020)

Wells Fargo and BLK: Defund Line 3 and Fossil Fuels!

Hundreds of activists descended on the Wells Fargo World HQ in San Francisco, CA this morning to paint a giant street mural calling on the world’s third largest financier of fossil fuels to defund Line 3 — a proposed pipeline expansion to bring a million barrels of tar sand per day through Anishinaabe territory — and all fossil fuels. Activists then marched to BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager and world’s top investor in climate destruction. Art direction by @davidsolnit. #StopLine3
