Hia-Ced O’odham, Tohono O’odham, Akimel O’odham and Allies Travel to Quitobaquito Springs

Quitobaquito Springs, AZ – Hia-Ced O’odham, Tohono O’odham, Akimel O’odham and allies will travel today to Quitobaquito Springs to pray and protest the construction of the border wall on their sacred site. The group will be arriving early Wednesday morning to hold ceremony upon their land, directly in defiance of an order from the National Park Service prohibiting them from entering the area. Earlier on Monday NPS issued a temporary closure of Puerto Blanco Drive, cutting access to the Springs to the public, this includes O’odham.

Members of the O’odham Anti Border Collective have stated that the closures are due in part to recent protests that have slowed down construction of the border wall. The border wall has caused irreversible damage to the land, water, animal and plant life and cultural heritage of the O’odham. “It is like witnessing a crime. It is like witnessing genocide,” shared a member of the O’odham Anti Border Collective who is both Hia-Ced and Tohono O’odham.

Residing upon Hia-Ced O’odham territory, Quitobaquito Springs are a revered and sacred site to all O’odham upon O’odham jewed (land). It is regularly used to hold ceremonies and pay homage to ancestors.

The spring, one of the few water sources in the Sonoran Desert, is located in what settlers call, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, on the so-called US/Mexico border. Quitobaquito has provided water to the O’odham and all forms of life since time immemorial. Water levels in Quitobaquito have dropped 30 percent since March as contractors withdraw large amounts of groundwater to mix concrete for the wall and flatten dirt roads. 84,000 gallons of groundwater per day is used to construct the border wall segments. For every mile of wall 411,840 gallons of extracted water is utilized. The springs are in critical risk of running dry.

The construction is a continuation of irreversible cultural and environmental damage seen in the destruction of sacred sites, division of O’odham in both the so-called US and Mexico, and violent disruption of the desert ecosystem.

I was attending an event in Winnipeg, Manitoba when someone told me “Don’t go walking alone at night, they’ve been finding native women in the Red River.” This comment made a shiver go through my spine. I knew that the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women was rampant throughout North America, but that night I dug deeper into the stories of women who went missing on Highway 16, and discovered how impossible it is to find information of how many women have gone missing.

Last Monday September 22nd, Savanna’s Act was passed in the House. This bill requires law enforcement to create protocols and guidelines for response to missing or murdered indigenous people. I hope this bill is the beginning of more legislation being passed to protect indigenous women. So many women and girls like Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind have left us far too soon.

Tribute to John Trudell

The poison and pollution in our environment affects how clearly we see things. We need to use our intelligence and organize our consciousness and our perceptions of reality. This is hard work, but it must be done. We are in an evolutionary reality. We are never given something we can't handle. It's about activating the thinking process, about the real value of our ability to think. I say don't believe anything the corporations hand us, whether it is TV, ads or the news as they tell us it is. I am a human, a member of a tribe, not a subject for corporate mining and exploitation. I don't trust their corporate "democracy". We humans must think for ourselves. That's what we need to give to the next generation.

-John Trudell

Just when you think the academic revolutionary socialists at The Red Nation can't get any more problematic, their latest assertion is that "To be anticommunist on stolen land is to be anti-Indigenous."
We reject this absurd neo-colonial attempt to dominate the politics of Indigenous struggles and liberation. This brand of narrow politicking serves to further subject Indigeneity to the constraints of European derived political ideologies. The Red Nation furthers their authoritarian apologism with cringy communist hero-worship and fetishism of socialist states in the global south where our Indigenous relations have also been subject to cooerced proletarianization and industrial resource devestation of their lands.

The Gospel of Historical Materialism, its descendents and adherents do not displace nor command the power of our spirituality nor the strength of our Medicine. To imply even in the most peripheral of ways that this fundamental part of who we are and have always been as indigenous is not simply incumbent, but dependent or worse subservient to ideology or its masquerading as a pseudo science is to voluntarily divorce us from that power and perpetuate a lie that has long since been disproven by the much longer existence and deeper wisdom of our Mother Earth and the spirit of life she sustains. No amount of communist proselytizing or rhetorical posturing and camouflage can or ever will negate this fact.

No matter how many intersectional checkboxes are marked, the redwashing of MLM ideology into a Red Nation-led socialist state is a disconnected intellectual political fantasy we want no part of.

In Saulnierville where non-native fishermen are fighting against the Mi’kmaq right to fish - and they’re spewing out some seriously racist sh*t while they’re at it. They’ve got nearly 100 boats out on the water and are basically terrorizing the Mi’kmaq at sea by cutting their traps, messing with their gear, and ramming their boats. The Mi’kmaq have way fewer and smaller boats, but they’re not backing down and keep heading out on the water to fish. On land, the Mi’kmaq community has set up camp on the wharf to support and protect each other - they’re singing together, cooking food for each other, and sleeping in their cars or tents in some seriously cold weather with a hurricane coming. Meanwhile, some local businesses have refused to serve them. The outright racism going on here is disgusting.
