Pax Romana IMCS - MIEC

Pax Romana IMCS - MIEC Pax Romana International Movement of Catholic Students IMCS Pax Romana is the International Movement of Catholic Students which brings together over 80 diverse national federations, associations, and movements of Catholic university and tertiary students from six regions.
(23)

Since 1921, when it was founded under the name of Pax Romana with the aim of promoting peace and justice at the global level, IMCS has been helping in the holistic formation of students around the globe. Since 1949, IMCS has been advocating on behalf of its members as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), and United Nations Education Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO). IMCS is also active with regional inter-governmental and international bodies, such as the International Labour Organisation and the World Bank to voice the concerns of youth. IMCS represents Catholic students within the Church as an international association of the lay Catholic faithful with a special relationship to the Pontifical Council for the Laity and the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. Inspired by Jesus' teachings and the Gospel values, IMCS encourages students to live a Spirituality in Action, linking faith, intellect and service of others through praying, reflecting, and acting on issues at all levels of society.

Mission: As a Catholic students' movement, IMCS' main mission is the evangelisation of the student milieu. Students are encouraged to live their faith by getting involved in society, locally, nationally and internationally.

IMCS PAX ROMANA GLOBAL SOLIDARITY STATEMENT FOR PROTESTING STUDENTS IN THAILAND

On International Human Rights Day 2020, We the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS)-Pax Romana express our support and solidarity with the students and public intellectuals of Thailand who demand reformation of the whole country where the lives of people are not in healthy conditions. They have occupied every nook and cranny of major cities in the country, calling for an end to scandalous leadership, oppressive dictatorship, wanton marginalization of the peoples' voices, and gross negligence of the rule of law.

It is very pertinent for the rulers of Thailand to understand that every system of governance is meant to be attentive to the voice of the people and upholds the interests and common good and "thus advance together towards an authentic and integral growth" as a nation, as the 2020 Encyclical Letter of Pope Francis entitled Fratelli Tutti, no. 113 advocates.
We have watched the peaceful protest and heard the students and public condemnation of the brutal, unethical and unprofessional strategies of the authorities, combined with near-lethal use of force by the security forces on the protesters.

We urge the Thai Government and Thai Monarchy to dialogue and listen to the legitimate demands of the students and public intellectuals for monarchical reform and political justice and peace. As stated in no. 127 of Fratelli Tutti, we believe that "real and lasting peace will only be possible "on the basis of a global ethic of solidarity and cooperation in the service of a future shaped by interdependence and responsibility in the whole human family", which is the joint responsibility of the political, monarchical leaders and the committed citizens to build the future of Thailand.

We call on the students, public intellectuals of the many cultures and faiths, and all people of goodwill in Thailand to remain peaceful in their legitimate quest for a Thailand that is just and green for everyone.

Pope Francis called upon everyone to dedicate the year 2017 to “prayerfully and actively to banishing violence from our hearts, words and deeds, and to becoming nonviolent people and to building nonviolent communities that care for our common home” (Message for World Day of Peace 2017). Responding to the call of the Holy Father, the Newman Center, the Catholic Campus Ministry at the University of Hawaii – Manoa, hosted a Lenten series on how we can live out the call of the pope in our daily lives. The series focused on examples of nonviolence such as Thomas Merton, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King Jr, Ghandi, and Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Lili’uokalani. It also featured international peace advocate, Fr. John Dear. As tension in the Pacific escalates due to the bravado between the presidents of the USA and North Korea, the United Nations met to negotiate a treaty that would make nuclear weapons illegal and moving toward its complete elimination. The draft text of what would become the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was approved by 122 member-states (1 opposed and 1 neutral). The teaching of the Church on nuclear weapons has been consistent and goes back to Pope Pius XII. Though historic, it is not surprising that the Holy See (Vatican) exercised its right to vote for the first time since entry to the United Nations as a “permanent observer” in 1964. The residents of Hawai‘i and other Pacific Island peoples are caught in between the rhetoric and instead of standing idle, concerned residents and students organized an event at the University of Hawaii, hosted by the Newman Center, on the new Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. There was a screening of the documentary film, “Gate: A True Story”, of three Japanese Zen monks who were on a mission to return the “Atomic Flame” to the place of its inception, the Trinity Test Site in New Mexico. Following the film, students of the Manoa International Relations Association presented a petition in calling upon the governments to support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The petition will remain open until Human Rights Day 2017, at which time the petition will be sent to leaders of inter-governmental organizations, the government of the USA, Hawaii State government, and religious leaders. To show your support for Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, visit the Newman Center’s website (scroll down to the petition): http://www.newmanhawaii.org/church/nonviolence.
